On a model for pollutant dispersion in the atmosphere with partially reflective boundary conditions and data simulation using CALPUFF

    Get PDF
The present work is an attempt to simulate the dispersion of pollutants in the surroundings of the thermoelectric plant located in Linhares from a new mathematical model based on partially reflective boundaries in the deterministic advection-diffusion equation. In addition to the advection-diffusion equation with partially reflective boundaries, it was used data simulated with the CALPUFF model. The exposed model was validated previously with the Hanford and Copenhagen experiments and the results indicate that effects on the boundaries are essential to model dispersion phenomenona in the atmospheric boundary layer

Relationships between portable chlorophyll meter estimates for the red mangrove tree (Rhizophora mangle L.)

Several ecosystem processes and services provided by mangrove trees, such as the regulation of biogeochemical cycles, biological control, soil retention and protection against erosion, and especially CO2 assimilation and carbon storage are related to the photosynthetic process (Donato et al. 2011; Schaeffer-Novelli et al., 2016; Santos et al., 2017). Photosynthesis is directly related to chlorophyll present in the leaves, and assessment of chlorophyll concentrations may be used as an indicator of a plants’ physiological condition. Decreases in leaf chlorophyll concentrations occur in plants exposed to environmental stress, including stress caused by heavy metals (Chandra & Kang, 2016), nutrient deficiency (Kalaji et al., 2017), and petroleum pollution (Arellano et al., 2017), among others. Thus, estimates of chlorophyll concentrations may provide information on plant and ecosystem function (Heenkenda et al., 2015; Pastor-Guzman et al., 2015)

Doing Queer in the Everyday of Academia: Reflections on Queering a Conference in International Law

    Get PDF
The pioneering 1990s movement in critical theory has generated path-breaking scholarship seeking to queer law. Efforts to queer international law have produced important research uncovering the role of international law as a performative discourse and as a transnational governance framework reproducing gendered and sexual hegemonies. However, these efforts have done very little to destabilize the structures and workings of the very site where international law is theorized and taught: the university. Queering international law has mostly entailed looking at how the state, international organizations, international lawyers, scholars, and civil society produce or resist the heteronormative matrix, “that grid of cultural intelligibility through which bodies, genders, and desires are naturalized.” But what about the role of the university and its everyday routines––themselves byproducts of the aforementioned matrix––in reproducing and/or resisting (gendered) hierarchies and exclusions? We have raised this question as young scholars involved in organizing a week-long event on queer methods in international legal scholarship. The present essay is a first attempt at grappling with what the queering of an academic conference in international law meant for us, and for the university itself. It echoes a recent trend in scholarship on queer pedagogies, which, however, remain mostly silent on practices of scientific exchange. By reflecting on our efforts to queer a workshop in the field of international law, we also hope to inspire others to pursue their own queer processes of knowledge production

Objective: To review the literature on the theories that seek to explain the possible relationship between COVID-19 and stroke. The descriptors used in the research were: COVID-19, Stroke, Interrelation and Prognosis. Results: The findings of this research include the relationship between COVID-19 and its risk factors, the connection of the Sars-Cov-2 virus with the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE), and also, the inflammatory responses triggered by the virus in its clear relationship with the onset of stroke. Conclusion: The relationship between the presence of COVID-19 in the human organism and a greater predisposition to develop stroke is evident, however, further studies are necessary to be able to deepen the knowledge on this topic, as well as to consolidate the theories involving its mechanism

Comparison of CALMET and WRF/CALMET coupling for dispersion of NO2 and SO2 using CALPUFF modelling system

    Get PDF
This study aims to compare the wind and concentration field generated by a coupling of WRF/CALMET model and CALMET/CALPUFF with no introduction of any gridded wind field. The domain was located at the city of Linhares, southeast region of Brazil, with a 15×15 grid cells and 1 km resolution. The chosen modelling period was April 1st, 2011, with the length of 90 h. The pollutants simulated by CALPUFF were NO2 and SO2. The final results of dispersion and concentration peak were compared against environmental legislation of 1 h average for NO2 and 24 h average for SO2. The first simulation, using WRF/CALMET model, shows plausible results. The second mode, CALMET/CALPUFF, generated a wind field with questionable results, which probably compromised the dispersion simulation. Both model results are within environmental legislation

Airway remodeling: The Drosophila model permits a purely epithelial perspective

    Get PDF
Airway remodeling is an umbrella term for structural changes in the conducting airways that occur in chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The pathobiology of remodeling involves multiple mesenchymal and lymphoid cell types and finally leads to a variety of hardly reversible changes such as hyperplasia of goblet cells, thickening of the reticular basement membrane, deposition of collagen, peribronchial fibrosis, angiogenesis and hyperplasia of bronchial smooth muscle cells. In order to develop solutions for prevention or innovative therapies, these complex processes must be understood in detail which requires their deconstruction into individual building blocks. In the present manuscript we therefore focus on the role of the airway epithelium and introduce Drosophila melanogaster as a model. The simple architecture of the flies’ airways as well as the lack of adaptive immunity allows to focus exclusively on the importance of the epithelium for the remodeling processes. We will review and discuss genetic and environmentally induced changes in epithelial structures and molecular responses and propose an integrated framework of research for the future
