Plasmons and screening in a monolayer of MoS2_2

We investigate the dynamical dielectric function of a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide within the random phase approximation. While in graphene damping of plasmons is caused by interband transitions, due to the large direct band gap in monolayer MoS2_2 collective charge excitations enter the intraband electron hole continuum similar to the situation in two-dimensional electron and hole gases. Since there is no electron-hole symmetry in MoS2_2, the plasmon energies in p- and n-doped samples clearly differ. The breaking of spin degeneracy caused by the large intrinsic spin-orbit interaction leads to a beating of Friedel oscillations for sufficiently large carrier concentrations, for holes as well as for electrons.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures; typos correcte

Making Gameful Work Work: The Gamification of Strategic Human Resource Management

    Get PDF
The recent pandemic enforced a massive digitalization in the working world and enabled the widespread utilization of gamification in organizations. Still, gamification in Human resource management (HRM) is rarely integrated into the human resources (HR) strategy and is often done on an operational level. We intend to portray the conceptual evolution of gamification in HRM. Through integrating the basic rationale of gamification design, we systematically utilize three resulting evolutionary gamification levels – structure, process, and dynamic capability – to explain how gamification in HR matures from a beginner level to a master level to contribute to the leverage of strategic potentials in HRM. At a meta-level, we will discuss the consequences of gamified HRM in terms of professionalization, hybridization, and captivation, finally concluding with a radical gamification vision for HRM

South Asia in the corona crisis: economic and political consequences

In the countries of South Asia, the rampant coronavirus pandemic could affect more than 1.9 billion people - almost a quarter of the world’s population. Given the weaknesses of national health care systems, the fight against the virus seems to be lost before it has even begun. The economic damage will increase the levels of poverty and inequality, and it is likely to exacerbate rather than mitigate a number of existing conflicts. On the domestic front, it is feared that authoritarian tendencies will increase during the management of the crisis. In the regional context, China could further expand its influence at the expense of India

Urban tree cadastres are important data bases for analysis and evaluation of biodiversity and ecosystem services of city trees. However, to validate the data for those issues, some parameters must be supplemented by ground surveys. Evaluations on biodiversity fall short if they are limited to the analysis of species richness. The present approach is geared towards meeting these requirements in the context of increasing the functionality of urban ecosystems and demonstrates operational applications for assessment and valuation of city trees

That Birdie Feeling: Understanding the Role of LAN Organizers in Maintaining a Gaming Community

    Get PDF
This paper presents the initial findings of a longitudinal study examining the role and experiences of LAN organizers in managing player communities pre, during and post the Covid 19 pandemic. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyze interviews with organizers of the Birdie LAN, Sweden’ s longest running LAN event. Five key themes were identified reflecting the roles of organizers and their experiences pre pandemic. (1) building and maintaining the culture, (2) encouraging inclusivity and community building, (3) negotiating professionalism, (4) learning, adapting and evolving, (5) creating sustainability through a future orientation. This paper presents the results of the first data collection to examine the impacts of the pandemic on grassroots gaming communities. The findings here represent a foundation in understanding the role of community leaders in maintaining a culture around gaming. These initial findings add value to our understanding of grassroots esports and player communities and the social practices of gaming in the modern era

Expanding Germany's relations with India: triangular cooperation as the next step in the strategic partnership

India is a central partner for German and European foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific. The German Federal Government's autumn 2020 guidelines and the November 2021 coalition agreement both emphasise the importance of expanding relations with India. To advance the common cause of a multilateral and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, both sides should - in addition to deepening their bilateral relations - extend their cooperation to third countries. Such triangular cooperation could herald a new phase of the Indo-German strategic partnership. (author's abstract

Flowcytometric assessment of fetomaternal hemorrhage during external cephalic version at term

    Get PDF
External cephalic version (ECV) at term is a safe procedure and reduces the incidence of cesarean sections for breech presentation. One of the known complications, however, is an ECV-related disruption of the placental barrier and a subsequent transfusion of fetal blood into maternal circulation. While the incidence of ECV-related fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) has been determined recently in a large trial using a manual Kleihauer-Betke test (KBT), questions remain on the amount of ECV-related FMH. KBT, which detects fetal red blood cells (RBC) on the basis of acidic resistance of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), is known to be a sensitive test, yet prone to procedural errors limiting its accuracy in quantifying FMH. In this study we investigated 50 patients for FMH before and after ECV, using a dual-color flow cytometric test kit with a lower limit of quantification of 0.05% fetal RBC in maternal peripheral blood. Three patients had a quantifiable increase of fetal RBC detected after ECV (0.06%; 0.08%; 0.1%). None of these subtle increments was predictable by ECV-related clinical parameters or translated into fetal compromise. Using a sensitive and accurate flow cytometric test method, our data provide further assurance to mothers on the safety of ECV at term

Retrospektive Analyse zur Diagnostik und Therapie von 100 Patienten mit Larynxkarzinomen am Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenia

    Get PDF

Assessing the Cooling Potential of Tailing Piles for Urban Heat Mitigation in Germany’s Ruhr Metropolitan Area—A Case Study of the Rungenberg in Gelsenkrichen

    Get PDF
Elevated air temperatures in cities with potential negative effects on, e.g., residents are a major challenge for urban planning. Open green spaces on hills where at night air can cool and drain into residential areas are of great importance to ameliorate the heat load in urban areas. In the Ruhr Metropolitan Region in Germany, tailing piles from the former coal mining industry offer a previously neglected potential for cooling neighbourhoods. The genesis and drainage of cold air on tailing piles have not been extensively investigated so far. Tailing piles are often located in or nearby residential areas and are exposed as open spaces, where cold air can build up and drain into the surrounding neighbourhoods due to their slopes. In the present study, the genesis of cold air and the cold air drainage are empirically investigated using thermal infrared imagery and air temperature measurements during one night in 2019 at the Rungenberg tailing pile in Gelsenkirchen. Furthermore, the cooling effect on the adjacent residential area, SchĂŒngelberg, was studied. The results indicate that cold air builds up at Rungenberg and drains into SchĂŒngelberg. However, the cold air flow into the residential area was blocked by a brick wall located at the foot of the Rungenberg tailing pile. More awareness should be given to the cooling potential of tailing piles, and urban planners should improve this cooling potential by keeping tailing piles open and removing barriers located in the drainage pathways in order to alleviate urban heat
