Design and Evaluation of an Economic Experiment via the Internet

The paper investigates whether Internet experiments are an appropriate alternative to traditional laboratory experiments. For an economic experiment of individual decision making results obtained over the Internet are compared to results obtained in the laboratory using exactly the same software. Of particular interest are differences in individual behavior. Our main findings are: 1) Running our own experiment on the Internet and in the laboratory generated similar data when economic decision behavior is concerned. (2) Variance in economic decision behavior is generally higher on the Internet experiment. (3) Decision times are shorter on the Internet. (4) Internet software provides a helpful platform for implementing economic experiments. The paper also reports on design challenges and how we have solved them.economics of technology ;

Low-cost Sensor Glove with Force Feedback for Learning from Demonstrations using Probabilistic Trajectory Representations

Sensor gloves are popular input devices for a large variety of applications including health monitoring, control of music instruments, learning sign language, dexterous computer interfaces, and tele-operating robot hands. Many commercial products as well as low-cost open source projects have been developed. We discuss here how low-cost (approx. 250 EUROs) sensor gloves with force feedback can be build, provide an open source software interface for Matlab and present first results in learning object manipulation skills through imitation learning on the humanoid robot iCub.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. Stellungnahme zur IAB/Prognos-Projektion Arbeitslandschaft bis 2010

"Der erste Teil der Stellungnahme behandelt die prinzipielle Bedeutung von langfristigen Arbeitsmarktprojektionen. Hervorgehoben wird zum einen ihre Aufklärungsfunktion gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit, ihr Beitrag zur Schaffung von Transparenz über konkurrierende beschäftigungspolitische Optionen. Unterstrichen wird zum anderen der Aufforderungscharakter gegenüber wirtschafts- und tarifpolitischen Entscheidungsträgern, der Anstoß zur Orientierung auf offensive Konzepte für den Abbau der Arbeitslosigkeit. Der zweite Teil der Stellungnahme konzentriert sich auf die politische Bewertung der IAB/Prognos-Arbeitsmarktprojektionen aus gewerkschatlicher Sicht. Aus den gesamtwirtschaftlichen Projektionsergebnissen (1987-2000) zur Entwicklung des Arbeitsvolumens - Unterschreitung der Beschäftigungsschwelle in allen drei optimistischen Wachstumsannahmen und vorsichtigen Produktivitätsannahmen - sowie zur Verteilung des Arbeitsvolumens - Anstieg der Erwerbstätigenzahl in allen drei Varianten bei Fortschreibung des Trends der Arbeitszeitverkürzung aus der Vergangenheit - wird globaler arbeitszeit- und wirtschaftspolitischer Handlungsbedarf abgeleitet. Aus den Projektionen des sektoralen Arbeitskräftebedarfs wird am Beispiel der Metallindustrie (1987-2000) aus der unterdurchschnittlichen Entwicklung des Arbeitsvolumens und dem Rückgang der Beschäftigungszahl in allen drei Varianten auf zusätzlichen gezielten tarif- und strukturpolitischen Handlungsbedarf geschlossen. Im dritten Teil der Stellungnahme wird die Problematik einer Ergänzung der vorgelegten Arbeitsmarktprojektionen durch eine "vierte Variante" andiskutiert, die den Transformationsprozeß in Osteuropa und in der DDR zusätzlich zu berücksichtigen versucht. Surgical technique and results of endoscopic anterior spinal canal decompression

Decompression of the spinal canal in the management of thoracolumbar trauma is controversial, but many authors have advocated decompression in patients with severe canal compromise and neurological deficits. Anterior decompression, corpectomy, and fusion have been shown to be more reliable for spinal canal reconstruction than posterior procedures; however, traditional anterior-access procedures, thoracotomy, and thoracoabdominal approaches are associated with significant complications. Endoscopy-guided spinal access avoids causing these morbidities, but it has not been shown to yield equivalent results in spinal canal clearance. This study was conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of endoscopic spinal canal decompression and reconstruction quantitatively by using pre- and postoperative computerized tomography (CT) scanning. Methods. Thirty patients with thoracolumbar canal compromise underwent endoscopic anterior spinal canal decompression, interbody reconstruction, and stabilization for fractures (27 cases), and tumor, infection, and severe degenerative disc disease (one case each). The mean follow-up period was 42 months (range 24 months-6 years). Neurological examinations, Frankel grades, radiological studies, and intraoperative findings were prospectively collected. Spinal canal clearance quantified on pre- and postoperative CT scans improved from 55 to 110%. A total of 25% of patients with complete paraplegia and 65% of those with incomplete neurological deficit improved neurologically. The complication rate was 16.7% and included one reintubation, two pleural effusions, one intercostal neuralgia, and one persistent lesion of the sympathetic chain. Conclusions. The authors describe the endoscopic technique of anterior spinal canal decompression in the thoracolumbar spine. The morbidities associated with an open procedure were avoided, and excellent spinal canal clearance was accomplished as was associated neurological improvement

Signature of a non-harmonic potential as revealed from a consistent shape and fluctuation analysis of an adherent membrane

The interaction of fluid membranes with a scaffold, which can be a planar surface or a more complex structure, is intrinsic to a number of systems - from artificial supported bilayers and vesicles to cellular membranes. In principle, these interactions can be either discrete and protein mediated, or continuous. In the latter case, they emerge from ubiquitous intrinsic surface interaction potentials as well as nature-designed steric contributions of the fluctuating membrane or from the polymers of the glycocalyx. Despite the fact that these nonspecific potentials are omnipresent, their description has been a major challenge from experimental and theoretical points of view. Here we show that a full understanding of the implications of the continuous interactions can be achieved only by expanding the standard superposition models commonly used to treat these types of systems, beyond the usual harmonic level of description. Supported by this expanded theoretical framework, we present three independent, yet mutually consistent, experimental approaches to measure the interaction potential strength and the membrane tension. Upon explicitly taking into account the nature of shot noise as well as of finite experimental resolution, excellent agreement with the augmented theory is obtained, which finally provides a coherent view of the behavior of the membrane in a vicinity of a scaffold.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Physical Review

The Novel CarbaLux Test for Carbapenemases and Carbapenem Deactivating AmpC Beta-Lactamases

Objectives: To evaluate the rapid phenotypic CarbaLux test for routine diagnostics in the medical laboratory in a proof of concept study. Methods: isolates of Gram-negative bacteria suspicious for carbapenem resistance including Enterobacterales (67), Pseudomonas (10), Acinetobacter (5), and Stenotrophomonas (1) species, collected between 2016 and 2018 from in-patients, were tested for carbapenemase activity using a novel fluorescent carbapenem. When subjected to extracted bacterial carbapenemases its fluorescence disappears. All bacteria to be tested were cultured on Columbia blood agar and few on other commercial media. MALDI TOF MS, molecular assays, automated MIC testing, and in part, agar diffusion tests served to characterize the isolates. For comparison, few selected bacteria were also investigated by prior phenotypic tests for carbapenemase detection. Results: Under UV light, the CarbaLux test allowed a rapid detection of 39/39 carbapenemase-producing bacteria, including 15 isolates with OXA carbapenemases (e.g., OXA-23, OXA-24/40-like OXA-48-like or OXA-181). Several isolates had low MICs but still expressed carbapenemases. Among Enterobacter spp., it detected six strains with hyper-produced AmpC beta-lactamases, which deactivated carbapenems but were not detectable by prior rapid phenotypic assays. An unexpected high carbapenemase activity appeared with these enzymes. They were identified as AmpC variants by inhibition with cloxacillin. Conclusion: Other than prior rapid phenotypic assessments for carbapenemases, which use secondary effects such as a change of pH, the inactivation of the fluorescent carbapenem substrate can be visualized directly under UV light. The new test works at 100 to 200-fold lower, therapy-like substrate concentrations. It takes advantage of the high substrate affinity to carbapenemases allowing also the detection of less reactive resistance enzymes via a trapping mechanism, even from bacteria, which might appear unsuspicious from initial antibiograms. The novel fluorescence method allows simple and safe handling, reliable readings, and documentation and is suitable for primary testing in the clinical laboratory

The development of tools for computer-assisted transcription and analysis of extensive speech corpora is one main issue at the Institute of German Language (IDS) and the Institute of Natural Language Processing (IMS). Corpora of natural spoken dialogue have been transcribed, and the analogue recordings of these discourses are digitized. An automatic segmentation system is employed which is based on Hidden Markov Models. The orthographic representation of the speech signal is transformed into a phonetic representation, the phonetic transcription is transformed into a system-inter­nal representation, and the time alignment between text and speech signal follows.
