    Reputation in perturbed repeated games

    The paper analyzes reputation effects in perturbed repeated games with discounting. If there is some positive prior probability that one of the players is committed to play the same (pure) action in every period, then this provides a lower bound for her equilibrium playoff in all Nash equilibria. This bound is tight and independent of what other types have positive probability. It is generally lower than Fudenberg and Levine's bound for games with a long-run player facing a sequence of short-run opponents. The bound cannot be improved by considering types playing finitely complicated history-dependent commitment strategies

    Age-related differences in corticomotor excitability and inhibitory processes during a visuomotor RT task

    This study tested the postulation that change in the ability to modulate corticospinal excitability and inhibitory processes underlie age-related differences in response preparation and generation during tasks requiring either rapid execution of a motor action or actively withholding that same action. Younger (n = 13, mean age = 26.0 years) and older adults (n = 13, mean age = 65.5 years) performed an RT task in which a warning signal (WS) was followed by an imperative signal (IS) to which participants were required to respond with a rapid flexion of the right thumb (go condition) or withhold their response (no-go condition). We explored the neural correlates of response preparation, generation, and inhibition using single- and paired-pulse TMS, which was administered at various times between WS and IS (response preparation phase) and between IS and onset of response-related muscle activity in the right thumb (response generation phase). Both groups exhibited increases in motor-evoked potential amplitudes (relative to WS onset) during response generation; however, this increase began earlier and was more pronounced for the younger adults in the go condition. Moreover, younger adults showed a general decrease in short-interval intracortical inhibition during response preparation in both the go and no-go conditions, which was not observed in older adults. Importantly, correlation analysis suggested that for older adults the task-related increases of corticospinal excitability and intracortical inhibition were associated with faster RT. We propose that the declined ability to functionally modulate corticospinal activity with advancing age may underlie response slowing in older adults

    An accurate record of volcanic ash fall deposition as characterized by dispersed organic matter in a Lower Permian tonstein bed (Faxinal Coalfield, Paraná Basin, Brazil)

    For the first time, the dispersed organic matter in the tonstein layer interbedded with a coal seam in the Faxinal Coalfield (Sakmarian, Southern Paraná Basin, Brazil) is characterized. The deposition of clusters of pollen grains was highly influenced by the intense ash fall process that probably occurred during seasonal dehiscence of reproductive structures. The well-preserved phytoclasts with their upper and lower leaf cuticles stuck together indicate that the rapid fall of ash on this material hindered organic biodegradation. The preservation of seemingly autochthonous Botryococcus colonies at the top of the tonstein layer is evidence of the subaqueous deposition of this layer. The darkening in cuticles and xylem phytoclasts can be attributed to different causes: the thermal influence of ash fall during deposition, chemical effects of the ash, prolonged oxidation of organic matter in low water level conditions or the burning of plant organs by wildfires. Analyses of dispersed organic matter along the tonstein layer showed that the organic matter succession reflects the composition of different plant strata (herbaceous pteridophytes and arboreal glossopterids-cordaitaleans) around the deposition site

    Shot noise in resonant tunneling through a zero-dimensional state with a complex energy spectrum

    We investigate the noise properties of a GaAs/AlGaAs resonant tunneling structure at bias voltages where the current characteristic is determined by single electron tunneling. We discuss the suppression of the shot noise in the framework of a coupled two-state system.     From Network Structure to Dynamics and Back Again: Relating dynamical stability and connection topology in biological complex systems

    The recent discovery of universal principles underlying many complex networks occurring across a wide range of length scales in the biological world has spurred physicists in trying to understand such features using techniques from statistical physics and non-linear dynamics. In this paper, we look at a few examples of biological networks to see how similar questions can come up in very different contexts. We review some of our recent work that looks at how network structure (e.g., its connection topology) can dictate the nature of its dynamics, and conversely, how dynamical considerations constrain the network structure. We also see how networks occurring in nature can evolve to modular configurations as a result of simultaneously trying to satisfy multiple structural and dynamical constraints.     Betamethasone phosphate reduces the efficacy of antenatal steroid therapy and is associated with lower birth weights when administered to pregnant sheep in combination with betamethasone acetate

    Background Antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) therapy is standard of care for women at imminent risk of preterm labour. Despite this, much remains to be understood regarding an optimal (maximum benefit, minimal risk of side effects) ACS dosing strategy. Although conveying overall benefit when given to the right patient at the right time, ACS treatment efficacy is highly variable, and is not risk-free. Building on earlier findings, we hypothesized that when administered in combination with slow-release betamethasone acetate, betamethasone phosphate and the high materno-fetal betamethasone concentrations it generates are redundant for fetal lung maturation. Objective Using an established sheep model of prematurity and post-natal ventilation of the preterm lamb, we aimed to compare the pharmacodynamic effects of a low-dose treatment with betamethasone acetate only against a standard dose of betamethasone phosphate and betamethasone acetate as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for women at risk of imminent preterm delivery between 24 and 35+6 weeks’ gestation. Methods Ewes carrying a single fetus at 122±1 d gestational age (term=150d) were randomized to receive either: i) maternal intramuscular injections of sterile saline (the Saline Negative Control Group, n=12), ii) two maternal intramuscular injections of 0.25 mg/kg betamethasone phosphate + acetate spaced by 24h (the Beta-P+Ac Group, n=12); or iii) two maternal intramuscular injections of 0.125 mg/kg betamethasone acetate spaced by 24h (the Beta-Ac Group, n=11). Fetuses were surgically delivered 48h after treatment initiation and ventilated for 30 minutes to determine functional lung maturation. Fetuses were euthanized after ventilation and lung were collected for analysis using quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot assays. Fetal plasma ACTH levels were measured in the cord blood samples taken at delivery. Results Preterm lambs were defined as either ACS treatment responders or non-responders using an arbitrary cut-off, being a PaCO2 level at 30 minutes of ventilation being more extreme than two standard deviations from the mean value of the normally-distributed Saline Control Group values. Relative to Saline Control Group animals, both ACS treatment group animals showed significantly improved lung physiological responses (blood gas and ventilation data) and had a biochemical signature (mRNA and surfactant protein assays) consistent with functional maturation. However, the Beta-Ac Group had a significantly higher treatment response rate than the Beta-P+Ac Group. These physiological results were strongly correlated to the amount of surfactant protein A. Birth weight was lower in Beta-P+Ac Group and the fetal HPA axis was supressed to a greater extent in the Beta-P+Ac Group. Conclusion Low dose ACS therapy solely employing Beta-Ac was sufficient for fetal lung maturation. The elevated materno-fetal betamethasone concentrations associated with the co-administration of betamethasone phosphate did not additionally improve lung maturation, but were associated with greater HPA axis suppression, a lower ACS treatment response rate, and lower birth weight – outcomes not desirable in a clinical setting. These data warrant a clinical investigation of sustained, low-dose ACS treatments that avoid high materno-fetal betamethasone exposures
