    Determination of absolute neutrino masses from Z-bursts

    Ultrahigh energy neutrinos (UHE\nu) scatter on relic neutrinos (R\nu) producing Z bosons, which can decay hadronically producing protons (Z-burst). We compare the predicted proton spectrum with the observed ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHECR) spectrum and determine the mass of the heaviest R\nu via a maximum likelihood analysis. Our prediction depends on the origin of the power-like part of the UHECR spectrum: m_\nu=2.75^{+1.28}_{-0.97} eV for Galactic halo and 0.26^{+0.20}_{-0.14} eV for extragalactic (EG) origin.     Experiments to Find or Exclude a Long-Lived, Light Gluino

    Gluinos in the mass range ~1 1/2 - 3 1/2 GeV are absolutely excluded. Lighter gluinos are allowed, except for certain ranges of lifetime. Only small parts of the mass-lifetime parameter space are excluded for larger masses unless the lifetime is shorter than ~ 2 10^{-11} (m_{gluino}/ GeV) sec. Refined mass and lifetime estimates for R-hadrons are given, present direct and indirect experimental constraints are reviewed, and experiments to find or definitively exclude these possibilities are suggested.Comment: 27 pp, latex with 1 uufiled figure, RU-94-35.     Beetle is a 128-channel readout chip, which will be used in the silicon vertex detector, the pile-up veto counters and the silicon tracker of the LHCb experiment at CERN. A further application of the Beetle chip is the readout of the LHCb RICH, in case it is equipped with multi-anode PMTs. The scope of this paper is the design changes leading to the latest version 1.3 of the Beetle readout chip.     Cosmic Flows on 100 Mpc/h Scales: Standardized Minimum Variance Bulk Flow, Shear and Octupole Moments

    The low order moments, such as the bulk flow and shear, of the large scale peculiar velocity field are sensitive probes of the matter density fluctuations on very large scales. In practice, however, peculiar velocity surveys are usually sparse and noisy, which can lead to the aliasing of small scale power into what is meant to be a probe of the largest scales. Previously, we developed an optimal ``minimum variance'' (MV) weighting scheme, designed to overcome this problem by minimizing the difference between the measured bulk flow (BF) and that which would be measured by an ideal survey. Here we extend this MV analysis to include the shear and octupole moments, which are designed to have almost no correlations between them so that they are virtually orthogonal. We apply this MV analysis to a compilation of all major peculiar velocity surveys, consisting of 4536 measurements. Our estimate of the BF on scales of ~ 100 Mpc/h has a magnitude of |v|= 416 +/- 78 km/s towards Galactic l = 282 degree +/- 11 degree and b = 6 degree +/- 6 degree. This result is in disagreement with LCDM with WMAP5 cosmological parameters at a high confidence level, but is in good agreement with our previous MV result without an orthogonality constraint, showing that the shear and octupole moments did not contaminate the previous BF measurement. The shear and octupole moments are consistent with WMAP5 power spectrum, although the measurement noise is larger for these moments than for the BF.     Open and Hidden Charm Production in 920 GeV Proton-Nucleus Collisions

    The HERA-B collaboration has studied the production of charmonium and open charm states in collisions of 920 GeV protons with wire targets of different materials. The acceptance of the HERA-B spectrometer covers negative values of xF up to xF=-0.3 and a broad range in transverse momentum from 0.0 to 4.8 GeV/c. The studies presented in this paper include J/psi differential distributions and the suppression of J/psi production in nuclear media.     Unfolding of differential energy spectra in the MAGIC experiment

    The paper describes the different methods, used in the MAGIC experiment, to unfold experimental energy distributions of cosmic ray particles (gamma-rays). Questions and problems related to the unfolding are discussed. Various procedures are proposed which can help to make the unfolding robust and reliable.     Enhanced Radiation Hardness and Faster Front Ends for the Beetle Readout Chip

    This paper summarizes the recent progress in the development of the 128 channel pipelined readout chip Beetle, which is intended for the silicon vertex detector, the inner tracker, the pile-up veto trigger and the RICH detectors of LHCb. Deficiencies found in the front end of the Beetle Version 1.0 and 1.1 chips resulted in the submissions of BeetleFE 1.1 and BeetleFE 1.2, while BeetleSR 1.0 implements test circuits to provide future Beetle chips with logic circuits hardened against single event upset (SEU). Section I. motivates the development of new front ends for the Beetle chip, and section II. summarizes their concepts and construction. Section III. reports preliminary results from the BeetleFE 1.1 and BeetleFE 1.2 chips, while section IV. describes the BeetleSR 1.0 chip. An outlook on future test and development of the Beetle chip is given in section V

    FLUTE, a linac based THz source

    We propose a versatile THz source named FLUTE (Ferninfrarot Linac- Und Test-Experiment) based on a 30 - 50 MeV S-band linac with bunch compressor, that aimsat not only producing high field THz pulses but also at serving as a test facility to study accelerator physics issues. This source is an important step towards the planned ultra-broadband THz to mid infrared user facility TBONE. Special emphasis is put on studies of bunch compression as a function of bunch charge (0.1-5 nC) and of different generation mechanisms of coherent radiation (CSR, CER, CTR). This paper describes the design and layout of the proposed FLUTE machine and presents results of beam dynamic calculations with the tracking programs ASTRA and CSRtrack. In addition, calculations for the achievable peak electrical field and spectral characteristics for one version of the FLUTE layout are shown
