In his work "the structure of \u27Iki\u27", Kuki Shūzō mentions Sukerolm as an example of \u27Iki\u27. During my study of the term \u27Iki\u27, I have found many other sources saying that Sukeroku represents the ideal of \u27Iki\u27. I examine the question : "Why is Sukeroku regarded as \u27Iki\u27 ?" Though Sukeroku Yukarino Edozakura is one of the most famous Kabuki plays in the Edo-style, it originated in Kamigata (Kyoto/Osaka), where it was at first a love-suicide drama in both Joruri and Kabuki. When Sukeroku was brought to Edo by Danjuro II, the play was radically alterned. It is since that point, that Sukeroku came to be considered an example of \u27Iki\u27.Since only the Edo Sukeroku is said to represent \u27Iki\u27 and Kamigata Sukeroku not, a comparison of those two different types of Sukeroku plays should show some elements of the \u27Iki\u27 aesthetic. I compare the structures of the play and the different characters across a variety of roles. Then I compare the results with the definition of \u27Iki\u27 that Kuki Shūzō gives. Only the qualities found in Edo Sukeroku are comparable to the criteria Kuki consider essential for the definition of \u27Iki\u27, but they are of course not exhaustive.\u27Iki\u27 is a term with a broad spectrum of meanings, covering customs and fashions to principles of life. The Edo Sukeroku obviously fifs within the bounds of this aesthetic

A multivariate evolutionary credibility model for mortality improvement rates

    Get PDF
The present paper proposes an evolutionary credibility model that describes the joint dynamics of mortality through time in several populations. Instead of modeling the mortality rate levels, the time series of population-specific mortality rate changes, or mortality improvement rates are considered and expressed in terms of correlated time factors, up to an error term. Dynamic random effects ensure the necessary smoothing across time, as well as the learning effect. They also serve to stabilize successive mortality projection outputs, avoiding dramatic changes from one year to the next. Statistical inference is based on maximum likelihood, properly recognizing the random, hidden nature of underlying time factors. Empirical illustrations demonstrate the practical interest of the approach proposed in the present paper

Conjugate Function Method for Numerical Conformal Mappings

    Get PDF
We present a method for numerical computation of conformal mappings from simply or doubly connected domains onto so-called canonical domains, which in our case are rectangles or annuli. The method is based on conjugate harmonic functions and properties of quadrilaterals. Several numerical examples are given.Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, 5 table

Analytical solutions for the electric field and dielectrophoretic force in a dielectrophoretic focusing electrode structure

The analysis of the movement of particles in a nonuniform field requires accurate knowledge of theelectric field distribution. In this letter, the Schwarz–Christoffel mapping method is used to analytically solve the electric field distribution in a dielectrophoretic focusing electrode structure. The analytical result for the electric field distribution is validated by comparison with numericalsimulations using the finite element method. The electric field solution is used to calculate the dielectrophoretic force on a particle in the syste

Analytical solutions of ac electrokinetics in interdigitated electrode arrays: Electric field, dielectrophoretic and traveling-wave dielectrophoretic forces

Analysis of the movement of particles in a nonuniform field requires accurate knowledge of the electric field distribution in the system. This paper describes a method for analytically solving the electric field distribution above interdigitated electrode arrays used for dielectrophoresis (DEP) and traveling wave dielectrophoresis (twDEP), using the Schwarz-Christoffel mapping method. The electric field solutions are used to calculate the dielectrophoretic force in both cases, and the traveling wave dielectrophoretic force and the electrorotational torque for the twDEP case. This method requires no approximations and can take into account the Neumann boundary condition used to represent an insulating lid and lower substrate. The analytical results of the electric field distributions are validated for different geometries by comparison with numerical simulations using the finite element method

DNA deaminases: AIDing hormones in immunity and cancer

    Get PDF
It is well established that hormones can cause cancer, much less known is how they induce this change in our somatic cells. This review highlights the recent finding that estrogen can exert its DNA-damaging potential by directly activating DNA deaminases. This recently discovered class of proteins deaminate cytosine to uracil in DNA, and are essential enzymes in the immune system. The enhanced production of a given DNA deaminase, induced by estrogen, can lead not only to a more active immune response, but also to an increase in mutations and oncogenic translocations. Identifying the direct molecular link between estrogen and a mutation event provides us with new targets for studying and possibly inhibiting the pathological side-effects of estrogen
