Dayside response of the magnetosphere to a small shock compression: Van Allen Probes, Magnetospheric MultiScale, and GOES-13.
Observations from Magnetospheric MultiScale (~8 Re) and Van Allen Probes (~5 and 4 Re) show that the initial dayside response to a small interplanetary shock is a double-peaked dawnward electric field, which is distinctly different from the usual bipolar (dawnward and then duskward) signature reported for large shocks. The associated EÂ ĂÂ B flow is radially inward. The shock compressed the magnetopause to inside 8 Re, as observed by Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS), with a speed that is comparable to the EÂ ĂÂ B flow. The magnetopause speed and the EÂ ĂÂ B speeds were significantly less than the propagation speed of the pulse from MMS to the Van Allen Probes and GOES-13, which is consistent with the MHD fast mode. There were increased fluxes of energetic electrons up to several MeV. Signatures of drift echoes and response to ULF waves also were seen. These observations demonstrate that even very weak shocks can have significant impact on the radiation belts
Electronic Transitions in Rb2+ Dimers Solvated in Helium
We have measured depletion spectra of the heteronuclear (85Rb87Rb+) dimer cation complexed with up to 10 He atoms. Two absorption bands are observed between 920 and 250 nm. The transition into the repulsive 12Sigmau+ state of HeRb2+ gives rise to a broad feature at 790 nm (12650 cmâ1); it exhibits a blueshift of 98 cmâ1 per added He atom. The transition into the bound 1 2Piu state of HeRb2+ reveals vibrational structure with a band head at \u3c 15522 cmâ1, a harmonic constant of 26 cmâ1, and a spin-orbit splitting of \u3c 183 cmâ1. The band experiences an average redshift of â38 cmâ1 per added He atom. Ab initio calculations rationalize the shape of the spectra and spectral shifts with respect to the number of helium atoms attached. For a higher number of solvating helium atoms, symmetric solvation on both ends of the Rb2+ ion is predicted
Verbal instructions override the meaning of facial expressions
Psychological research has long acknowledged that facial expressions can implicitly trigger affective
psychophysiological responses. However, whether verbal information can alter the meaning of facial
emotions and corresponding response patterns has not been tested. This study examined emotional
facial expressions as cues for instructed threat-of-shock or safety, with a focus on defensive responding.
In addition, reversal instructions were introduced to test the impact of explicit safety instructions on
fear extinction. Forty participants were instructed that they would receive unpleasant electric shocks,
for instance, when viewing happy but not angry faces. In a second block, instructions were reversed
(e.g., now angry faces cued shock). Happy, neutral, and angry faces were repeatedly presented, and
auditory startle probes were delivered in half of the trials. The defensive startle reflex was potentiated
for threat compared to safety cues. Importantly, this effect occurred regardless of whether threat
was cued by happy or angry expressions. Although the typical pattern of response habituation was
observed, defense activation to newly instructed threat cues remained significantly enhanced in the
second part of the experiment, and it was more pronounced in more socially anxious participants.
Thus, anxious individuals did not exhibit more pronounced defense activation compared to less anxious
participants, but their defense activation was more persistent
Target-specific expression of presynaptic NMDA receptors in neocortical microcircuits.
Traditionally, NMDA receptors are located postsynaptically; yet, putatively presynaptic NMDA receptors (preNMDARs) have been reported. Although implicated in controlling synaptic plasticity, their function is not well understood and their expression patterns are debated. We demonstrate that, in layer 5 of developing mouse visual cortex, preNMDARs specifically control synaptic transmission at pyramidal cell inputs to other pyramidal cells and to Martinotti cells, while leaving those to basket cells unaffected. We also reveal a type of interneuron that mediates ascending inhibition. In agreement with synapse-specific expression, we find preNMDAR-mediated calcium signals in a subset of pyramidal cell terminals. A tuned network model predicts that preNMDARs specifically reroute information flow in local circuits during high-frequency firing, in particular by impacting frequency-dependent disynaptic inhibition mediated by Martinotti cells, a finding that we experimentally verify. We conclude that postsynaptic cell type determines presynaptic terminal molecular identity and that preNMDARs govern information processing in neocortical columns

Buckling of Isotropic and Composite Cylindrical Shells with Circular Cutouts
Predicting the critical buckling load of cylindrical shells with circular cutouts subjected to uniform axial compression is an important part of the structural design in the aerospace industry as buckling significantly reduces the load-carrying capability of the structure. A cutout constitutes a major disruption in the shell geometry, and therefore it should be expected that it has a significant effect on the sustainable buckling load. An analytical solution for estimating the buckling load of isotropic and quasi-isotropic composite cylindrical shells with circular cutouts is developed to assess changes made to the geometry and the material during the preliminary design phase quickly. The Ritz method is employed to minimize the total potential energy of an ideal shell that contains a central opening in order to predict a linear buckling load. Finite element simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of the analytical solution. In addition, they are used to investigate the evolution of buckling modes, the effects of initial geometric imperfections, as well as the shell failure mode. The nondimensional curvature parameter α can be used to categorize the buckling behavior of cylindrical shells and is a function of the cutout radius, the shell radius, and the shell thickness. A small cutout has virtually no influence on the buckling load compared to a pristine shell and the displacement pattern at buckling is global. The buckling load decreases rapidly for moderately large cutouts where the stability loss is the result of a local buckling mode that immediately leads to global buckling. Cylindrical shells with large cutouts are again relatively insensitive to an increase of the cutout size, but the buckling load is greatly reduced relative to a shell without a cutout. Large openings also feature a stable local buckling mode where substantial lateral prebuckling displacements emerge before the structure buckles globally. While the analytical procedure theoretically should not capture the onset of global buckling independent of local buckling, it follows numerical trends for cutouts of moderate and large size regardless. Therefore, it may be used during preliminary design to estimate the impact of changes made to the shell geometry and material. Local buckling is caused by high compressive stresses next to the cutout and, in some cases, large lateral prebuckling displacements. The detrimental effect of the stress field may be partially relieved in composite cylindrical shells by reducing the amount of axial bending stresses that occur. Hence, the chosen stacking sequence can have a significant influence on the buckling load of shells with moderate and large openings.Aerospace Engineerin
