Orders and dimensions for sl(2) or sl(3) module categories and Boundary Conformal Field Theories on a torus
After giving a short description, in terms of action of categories, of some
of the structures associated with sl(2) and sl(3) boundary conformal field
theories on a torus, we provide tables of dimensions describing the semisimple
and co-semisimple blocks of the corresponding weak bialgebras (quantum
groupoids), tables of quantum dimensions and orders, and tables describing

From modular invariants to graphs: the modular splitting method
We start with a given modular invariant M of a two dimensional su(n)_k
conformal field theory (CFT) and present a general method for solving the
Ocneanu modular splitting equation and then determine, in a step-by-step
explicit construction, 1) the generalized partition functions corresponding to
the introduction of boundary conditions and defect lines; 2) the quantum
symmetries of the higher ADE graph G associated to the initial modular
invariant M. Notice that one does not suppose here that the graph G is already
known, since it appears as a by-product of the calculations. We analyze several

Key Performance Criteria Affecting the Most the Safety of a Nuclear Waste Long Term Storage : A Case Study Commissioned by CEA
As part of the work scope set in the French law on high level long lived waste R&D passed in 1991, CEA is conducting a research program to establish the scientific basis and assess the feasibility of long term storage as an option for the safe management of nuclear waste for periods as long as centuries. This goal is a significant departure from the current industrial practice where storage facilities are usually built to last only a few decades. From a technical viewpoint such an extension in time seems feasible provided care and maintenance is exercised. Considering such long periods of time, the risk for Society of loosing oversight and control of such a facility is real, which triggers the question of whether and how long term storage safety can be actually achieved. Therefore CEA commissioned a study (1) in which MUTADIS Consultants (2) and CEPN (3) were both involved. The case study looks into several past and actual human enterprises conducted over significant periods o f time, one of them dating back to the end of the 18th century, and all identified out of the nuclear field. Then-prevailing societal behavior and organizational structures are screened out to show how they were or are still able to cope with similar oversight and control goals. As a result, the study group formulated a set of performance criteria relating to issues like responsibility, securing funds, legal and legislative implications, economic sustainable development, all being areas which are not traditionally considered as far as technical studies are concerned. These criteria can be most useful from the design stage onward, first in an attempt to define the facility construction and operating guiding principles, and thereafter to substantiate the safety case for long term storage and get geared to the public dialogue on that undertaking should it become a reality
Active Ground Patterns Near Mars' Equator in the Glen Torridon Region of Gale Crater
On Mars, near the equator, much of the terrain in Gale Crater consists of bedrock outcrops separated by relatively smooth, uniform regolith surfaces. In scattered sites, however, distinct patterns—in the form and texture of the ground surface—contrast sharply with the typical terrain and with eolian bedforms. This paper focuses on these diverse, intriguing ground patterns. They include ∼1 to >10 m-long linear disruptions of uniform regolith surfaces, alignments, and other arrangements of similar-sized rock fragments and shallow, ∼0.1 m-wide sandy troughs 1–10 m in length. Similar features were recognized early in the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, but they received only limited attention until Curiosity, the MSL rover, encountered striking examples in the Glen Torridon region. Herein, the ground patterns are illustrated with rover images. Potential mechanisms are briefly discussed in the context of the bedrock composition and atmospheric conditions documented by Curiosity. The evidence suggests that the patterns are active forms of spontaneous granular organization. It leads to the hypothesis that the patterns arise and develop from miniscule, inferred cyclic expansion and contraction of the bedrock and regolith, likely driven by oscillating transfers of energy and moisture between the atmosphere and the terrain. The hypothesis has significant implications for studies of contemporary processes on Mars on both sides of the atmosphere-lithosphere interface. The ground patterns, as well as ripples and dunes formed by the wind, constitute remarkable extra-terrestrial examples of granular self-organization, complex phenomena well known in diverse systems on Earth.A. Polymer transport in random flow
The dynamics of polymers in a random smooth flow is investigated in the
framework of the Hookean dumbbell model. The analytical expression of the
time-dependent probability density function of polymer elongation is derived
explicitly for a Gaussian, rapidly changing flow. When polymers are in the
coiled state the pdf reaches a stationary state characterized by power-law
tails both for small and large arguments compared to the equilibrium length.
The characteristic relaxation time is computed as a function of the Weissenberg
number. In the stretched state the pdf is unstationary and exhibits
multiscaling. Numerical simulations for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow
confirm the relevance of theoretical results obtained for the delta-correlated

Molecular evidence of Late Archean archaea and the presence of a subsurface hydrothermal biosphere

by thermal stress, are present in solvent extracts of 2,707-2,685 million year old (Ma)
metasedimentary rocks from Timmins, Ontario, Canada. These lipids appear in
conventional gas chromatograms as unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) and include
cyclic and acyclic biphytanes, C36-C39 derivatives of the biphytanes, and C31-C35
extended hopanes. Biphytane and extended hopanes are also found in high pressure
catalytic hydrogenation (HPCH) products released from solvent-extracted sediments,indicating that archaea and bacteria were present in Late Archean sedimentary
environments. Post-depositional, hydrothermal gold mineralization and graphite
precipitation occurred prior to metamorphism (~2,665 Ma). Late Archean metamorphism
significantly reduced the kerogen’s adsorptive capacity and severely restricted sediment
porosity, limiting the potential for post-Archean additions of organic matter to the
samples. Argillites exposed to hydrothermal gold mineralization have disproportionately
high concentrations of extractable archaeal and bacterial lipids relative to what is
releasable from their respective HPCH product and what is observed for argillites
deposited away from these hydrothermal settings. The addition of these lipids to the
sediments likely results from a Late Archean subsurface hydrothermal biosphere of

SeaWiFS technical report series. Volume 19: Case studies for SeaWiFS calibration and validation, part 2
This document provides brief reports, or case studies, on a number of investigations and data set development activities sponsored by the Calibration and Validation Team (CVT) within the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Project. Chapter 1 is a comparison with the atmospheric correction of Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) data using two independent radiative transfer formulations. Chapter 2 is a study on lunar reflectance at the SeaWiFS wavelengths which was useful in establishing the SeaWiFS lunar gain. Chapter 3 reports the results of the first ground-based solar calibration of the SeaWiFS instrument. The experiment was repeated in the fall of 1993 after the instrument was modified to reduce stray light; the results from the second experiment will be provided in the next case studies volume. Chapter 4 is a laboratory experiment using trap detectors which may be useful tools in the calibration round-robin program. Chapter 5 is the original data format evaluation study conducted in 1992 which outlines the technical criteria used in considering three candidate formats, the hierarchical data format (HDF), the common data format (CDF), and the network CDF (netCDF). Chapter 6 summarizes the meteorological data sets accumulated during the first three years of CZCS operation which are being used for initial testing of the operational SeaWiFS algorithms and systems and would be used during a second global processing of the CZCS data set. Chapter 7 describes how near-real time surface meteorological and total ozone data required for the atmospheric correction algorithm will be retrieved and processed. Finally, Chapter 8 is a comparison of surface wind products from various operational meteorological centers and field observations. Surface winds are used in the atmospheric correction scheme to estimate glint and foam radiances
Apple pomace powder as natural food ingredient in bakery jams
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether apple pomace powder produced by a simple drying method is suitable for replacing pectin in bakery jam products. Rheological properties of bakery jams were tested by oscillatory tests using amplitude sweep method. Apple pomace addition decreased gel strength and stability of bakery jams, while 12-month storage increased the gel strength of samples. Based on our results, dried apple pomace powder seems to be suitable to replace pectin up to 40% without changing rheological properties of bakery jams
A demonstration of an affinity between pyrite and organic matter in a hydrothermal setting
One of the key-principles of the iron-sulphur world theory is to bring organic molecules close enough to interact with each other, using the surface of pyrite as a substrate in a hydrothermal setting. The present paper explores the relationship of pyrite and organic matter in a hydrothermal setting from the geological record; in hydrothermal calcite veins from Carboniferous limestones in central Ireland. Here, the organic matter is accumulated as coatings around, and through, pyrite grains. Most of the pyrite grains are euhedral-subhedral crystals, ranging in size from ca 0.1-0.5 mm in diameter, and they are scattered throughout the matrix of the vein calcite. The organic matter was deposited from a hydrothermal fluid at a temperature of at least 200°C, and gives a Raman signature of disordered carbon. This study points to an example from a hydrothermal setting in the geological record, demonstrating that pyrite can have a high potential for the concentration and accumulation of organic materials
