    Input and age-dependent variation in second language learning: A connectionist account

    Language learning requires linguistic input, but several studies have found that knowledge of second language (L2) rules does not seem to improve with more language exposure (e.g., Johnson & Newport, 1989). One reason for this is that previous studies did not factor out variation due to the different rules tested. To examine this issue, we reanalyzed grammaticality judgment scores in Flege, Yeni‐Komshian, and Liu's (1999) study of L2 learners using rule‐related predictors and found that, in addition to the overall drop in performance due to a sensitive period, L2 knowledge increased with years of input. Knowledge of different grammar rules was negatively associated with input frequency of those rules. To better understand these effects, we modeled the results using a connectionist model that was trained using Korean as a first language (L1) and then English as an L2. To explain the sensitive period in L2 learning, the model's learning rate was reduced in an age‐related manner. By assigning different learning rates for syntax and lexical learning, we were able to model the difference between early and late L2 learners in input sensitivity. The model's learning mechanism allowed transfer between the L1 and L2, and this helped to explain the differences between different rules in the grammaticality judgment task. This work demonstrates that an L1 model of learning and processing can be adapted to provide an explicit account of how the input and the sensitive period interact in L2 learning

    Cross-National Analysis of the Associations between Traumatic Events and Suicidal Behavior: Findings from the WHO World Mental Health Surveys

    Background Community and clinical data have suggested there is an association between trauma exposure and suicidal behavior (i.e., suicide ideation, plans and attempts). However, few studies have assessed which traumas are uniquely predictive of: the first onset of suicidal behavior, the progression from suicide ideation to plans and attempts, or the persistence of each form of suicidal behavior over time. Moreover, few data are available on such associations in developing countries. The current study addresses each of these issues.Methodology/Principal Findings Data on trauma exposure and subsequent first onset of suicidal behavior were collected via structured interviews conducted in the households of 102,245 (age 18+) respondents from 21 countries participating in the WHO World Mental Health Surveys. Bivariate and multivariate survival models tested the relationship between the type and number of traumatic events and subsequent suicidal behavior. A range of traumatic events are associated with suicidal behavior, with sexual and interpersonal violence consistently showing the strongest effects. There is a dose-response relationship between the number of traumatic events and suicide ideation/attempt; however, there is decay in the strength of the association with more events. Although a range of traumatic events are associated with the onset of suicide ideation, fewer events predict which people with suicide ideation progress to suicide plan and attempt, or the persistence of suicidal behavior over time. Associations generally are consistent across high-, middle-, and low-income countries.Conclusions/Significance This study provides more detailed information than previously available on the relationship between traumatic events and suicidal behavior and indicates that this association is fairly consistent across developed and developing countries. These data reinforce the importance of psychological trauma as a major public health problem, and highlight the significance of screening for the presence and accumulation of traumatic exposures as a risk factor for suicide ideation and attempt.African and African American StudiesPsycholog

    Active therapy and models of care for adolescents and young adults with cancer

    The reduction in the cancer mortality rate in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer has lagged behind the reduction noted in children and older adults. Studies investigating reasons for this are limited but causes appear to be multifactorial. Host factors such as developmental stage, compliance, and tolerance to therapy; provider factors such as lack of awareness of cancer in AYA and referral patterns; differences in disease biology and treatment strategies; low accrual onto clinical trials; and lack of psychosocial support and education programs for AYA all likely play a role. Recommendations for change from a recent international workshop include education of physicians and patients concerning AYA cancer, improved cooperation between pediatric and adult centers, age-appropriate psychosocial support services, programs to help AYA with issues relevant to them, dedicated AYA hospital space, improved accrual to clinical trials, the use of technology to educate patients and enhance communication between patients and the health care team, and ensuring that resident and fellowship training programs provide adequate education in AYA oncology. The longer term goal is to develop AYA oncology into a distinct subspecialist discipline within oncology. The ideal model of care would incorporate medical care, psychosocial support services, and a physical environment that are age-appropriate. When this is not feasible, the development of "virtual units" connecting patients to the health care team or a combination of physical and virtual models are alternative options. The assessment of outcome measures is necessary to determine whether the interventions implemented result in improved survival and better quality of life, and are cost-effective

    The human face of biobank networks for translational research

    The biobanking literature frequently addresses donor and societal issues surrounding biobanking, but the biobanker's perspective is rarely highlighted. While not comprehensive, this article offers an overview of the human aspects of biobanking from the viewpoint of biobank personnel-from biobank formation, through the process, and in addressing post-biobanking issues. As every biobank and biobank network may differ, such factors may vary. Before biobanking can commence, the purpose of the biobank network must be defined, and buy-in achieved from many stakeholders. An attitude of trust and sharing is essential, as is good communication. Developing a biobank is time consuming and laborious. Forming a network requires significantly more time due to the need for cross-institutional harmonization of policies, procedures, information technology considerations, and ethics. Circumstances may dictate whether development occurs top-down and/or bottom-up, as well as whether network management may be independent or by personnel from participating biobanks. Funding tends to be a prominent issue for biobanks and networks alike. In particular, networks function optimally with some level of government support, particularly for personnel. Quality biospecimen collection involves meticulously documented coordination with a network of medical and nursing staff. Examining and sampling operative specimens requires timely collaboration between the surgical and pathology teams. "Catch rates" for samples may be difficult to predict and may occur at a frequency less than anticipated due to factors related to the institution, staff, or specimen. These factors may affect specimen quality, and have a downstream effect on competition for specimens for research. Thus, release of samples requires a fair, carefully constructed sample access policy, usually incorporating an incentive for researchers, and an encouragement to form collaborations. Finally, the public and patient groups should aim to understand the benefits of a biobank network, so that patient care is improved through coordinated biobanking activity.</p

    Biobanking in the COVID-19 era and beyond, part 2 : a set of tool implementation case studies

    The COVID-19 era has brought about a number of novel challenges for the global biobanking community. An array of diverse tools (e.g., standards, best practices, and plans) exists to support quality and fitness-for-purpose in biobank operations. The International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) COVID-19 Response Task Force has set out to identify needs and gaps in these tools and make recommendations for the next generation of available tools, having closely examined the COVID-19-related challenges. While conducting this work to examine the relationships between tools and biobank adaptability, a subgroup of the task force conducted a parallel effort to develop and describe individual COVID-19 era case studies based on a number of operating biobanks. Each case study presents a different combination of implemented tools. Observations and lessons learned from these case studies are provided, and experiences with tool implementation are discussed. This information is supplemented by data relating to tool usefulness that was obtained through an ISBER survey discussed in a companion article. The knowledge gained from this study will be combined with other task force efforts to make recommendations to better position the biobanking community in their response to future emergencies

    Development of system performance indicators for adolescent and young adult cancer care and control in Canada

    To develop an expert-group, consensus-based list of system performance indicators to be used for monitoring, evaluating, and benchmarking progress for cancer care and control in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Canada.A national multidisciplinary panel of AYA oncology experts was convened; they prepared a literature review and undertook a brainstorming exercise to create a comprehensive list of indicators based on a previously defined framework for AYA cancer care and control in Canada. A modified Delphi process was then undertaken to cull the list based on 3 quick screen criteria. Three rounds of ranking were required. The fourth stage employed a face-to-face meeting, and the final stage utilized a survey to rank the indicators on the basis of importance and feasibility.Nineteen participants contributed to the 5-stage process. From an initial list of 114 indicators, 14 were ultimately endorsed, representing 5 themes: active care, survivorship, psychosocial issues, palliative care, and research. The 5 highest ranked indicators were assessed as very to moderately feasible, with only a single indicator (clinical trial enrollment) in the top 5 assigned a least feasible ranking.The 14 indicators provide a starting point for the development of a standard set of metrics for AYA cancer care and control in Canada and have potential for international utility
