The predictability of letters in written english
We show that the predictability of letters in written English texts depends
strongly on their position in the word. The first letters are usually the least
easy to predict. This agrees with the intuitive notion that words are well
defined subunits in written languages, with much weaker correlations across
these units than within them. It implies that the average entropy of a letter
deep inside a word is roughly 4 times smaller than the entropy of the first
letter.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Chemical Modification of the Active Site of Ferredoxin-Thioredoxin Reductase
Ferredoxin-thioredoxinreductase is an essential member of a light-dependent regulatory system in oxygenic photosynthesis. This enzyme is composed of two nonidentical subunits, contains a 4Fe-4S cluster of a yet unknown function, and a catalytically active dithiol group. We have used
N-ethylmaleimide to modify specifically the active site thiols of the protein and show that their chemical modification completely abolishes the catalytic capacity of the enzyme and causes changes in the absorption spectrum of the protein
Automatically Welded Tubular X‐Joints for Jacket Substructures: Prediction of the Technical Fatigue Crack Location
To increase the competitiveness of jacket substructures compared to monopiles a changeover from an individual towards a serial jacket production based on automated manufactured tubular joints combined with standardized pipes has to be achieved. Therefore, this paper addresses fatigue tests of automatically welded tubular X-joints focusing on the location of the technical fatigue crack. The detected location of the technical crack is compared to numerical investigations predicting the most fatigue prone notch considering the structural stress approach as well as the notch stress approach. Besides, the welding process of the automated manufactured tubular X-joints is presented
Biochemical properties of poplar thioredoxin z
AbstractTrx-z is a chloroplastic thioredoxin, exhibiting a usual WCGPC active site, but whose biochemical properties are unknown. We demonstrate here that Trx-z supports the activity of several plastidial antioxidant enzymes, such as thiol-peroxidases and methionine sulfoxide reductases, using electrons provided by ferredoxin–thioredoxin reductase. Its disulfide reductase activity requires the presence of both active site cysteines forming a catalytic disulfide bridge with a midpoint redox potential of −251mV at pH7. These in vitro biochemical data suggest that, besides its decisive role in the regulation of plastidial transcription, Trx-z might also be involved in stress response
