Temporal and spatial variability of prehistoric aquatic resource procurement: a case study from Mesolithic Northern Iberia
Prehistoric shell middens hold valuable evidence of past human–environment interactions. In this study, we used carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) stable isotopes of Mytilus galloprovincialis shells excavated from El Perro, La Fragua and La Chora, three Mesolithic middens in Cantabria, Northern Spain, to examine hunter-gatherer subsistence strategies in terms of seasonality and collection areas. Furthermore, we used shell δ18O to reconstruct water temperature during the early Holocene. Stable isotopes reveal a shellfish harvesting diversification trend represented by the gradual establishment of the upper estuaries as new procurement areas and an increase of harvesting mobility in both coastal and in-land sites. These innovations in subsistence strategies during the Mesolithic coincided with major changes in the surrounding environment as attested by the water temperature reconstructions based on δ18O and backed by several global and regional records. Overall, our results show that shell δ13C and δ18O stable isotopes have an underexplored potential as provenance proxies which stimulates their application to the archaeological record to further understand prehistoric human resource procurement and diet
Time-dependent screening of a positive charge distribution in metals: Excitons on an ultra-short time scale
Experiments determining the lifetime of excited electrons in crystalline
copper reveal states which cannot be interpreted as Bloch states [S. Ogawa {\it
et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 55}, 10869 (1997)]. In this article we propose a
model which explains these states as transient excitonic states in metals. The
physical background of transient excitons is the finite time a system needs to
react to an external perturbation, in other words, the time which is needed to
build up a polarization cloud. This process can be probed with modern
ultra-short laser pulses. We calculate the time-dependent density-response
function within the jellium model and for real Cu. From this knowledge it is
possible within linear response theory to calculate the time needed to screen a
positive charge distribution and -- on top of this -- to determine excitonic
binding energies. Our results lead to the interpretation of the experimentally

GPS water level measurements for Indonesia's Tsunami Early Warning System
On Boxing Day 2004, a severe tsunami was generated by a strong earthquake in Northern Sumatra causing a large number of casualties. At this time, neither an offshore buoy network was in place to measure tsunami waves, nor a system to disseminate tsunami warnings to local governmental entities. Since then, buoys have been developed by Indonesia and Germany, complemented by NOAA's Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) buoys, and have been moored offshore Sumatra and Java. The suite of sensors for offshore tsunami detection in Indonesia has been advanced by adding GPS technology for water level measurements. <br><br> The usage of GPS buoys in tsunami warning systems is a relatively new approach. The concept of the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS) (Rudloff et al., 2009) combines GPS technology and ocean bottom pressure (OBP) measurements. Especially for near-field installations where the seismic noise may deteriorate the OBP data, GPS-derived sea level heights provide additional information. <br><br> The GPS buoy technology is precise enough to detect medium to large tsunamis of amplitudes larger than 10 cm. The analysis presented here suggests that for about 68% of the time, tsunamis larger than 5 cm may be detectable
Velocity Dependence Of One- And Two-electron Processes In Intermediate-velocity Ar16++He Collisions
We report investigations of one- and two-electron processes in the collisions of 0.9-keV/u to 60-keV/u (vp=0.19-1.55 a.u.) Ar16+ ions with He targets. The cross sections for these processes were measured by observing the final charges of the Ar ions and the recoiling target ions in coincidence. The average Q values for the capture channels were determined by measuring the longitudinal momenta of the recoiling target ions. Single capture (SC) is the dominant process and is relatively independent of the projectile energy. The two-electron transfer-ionization (TI) process is the next largest and slowly increases with projectile energy. The Q values for both SC and TI decrease with increasing projectile energy. Our data thereby suggest that electrons are captured into less tightly bound states as the collision velocity is increased. Both double capture and single ionization are much smaller and fairly independent of the projectile energy. The energy independence of SI is somewhat surprising as our energy range spans the region of the target electron velocity where ionization would be expected to increase. Our analysis suggests that the ionization process is being suppressed by SC and TI processes. © 1993 The American Physical Society
High-resolution records of growth temperature and life history of two Nacella limpet species, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
Stable isotope ratios in patelloid limpets of the genus Patella have been established as proxies for coastal environmental change at sub-monthly resolution along the eastern North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Nacella deaurata (Gmelin 1791) and N. magellanica (Gmelin 1791) are common intertidal species of patelloid limpets inhabiting the coast of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina/Chile and are commonly found in Holocene archaeological deposits. Here, we examine oxygen and carbon isotope ratios (δ18Oshell and δ13Cshell, respectively) of modern specimens of N. deaurata and N. magellanica to test the hypotheses that: 1) they form their shells in isotopic equilibrium with ambient water; and 2) prominent growth lines form annually. Based on growth margin analysis of δ18Oshell values, we identified a positive offset of 1.3 ± 0.4‰ (N. deaurata) and 1.3 ± 0.3‰ (N. magellanica) from expected equilibrium, similar to other patelloid limpets. Because the offset is relatively consistent between observed and expected values, it can be taken into account to reliably reconstruct growth temperature. Seawater temperature estimated from oxygen isotope time series data falls within the observed range. Thus, N. deaurata and N. magellenica shells serve as reliable proxy archives of seasonal variation in coastal seawater temperature. Time series of δ13Cshell values do not vary seasonally in all shells; hence, the influence on its variation requires further study. The timing of prominent growth lines contextualized by the δ18Oshell time series form twice a year and therefore cannot be used to estimate lifespan. Future isotopic analysis of archaeological Nacella shells can potentially provide much needed information about Holocene climate change at sub-monthly resolution from high-latitude South American locations, and contribute to our understanding of human behavior and human-climate interactions
Lifetime of d-holes at Cu surfaces: Theory and experiment
We have investigated the hole dynamics at copper surfaces by high-resolution
angle-resolved photoemission experiments and many-body quasiparticle GW
calculations. Large deviations from a free-electron-like picture are observed
both in the magnitude and the energy dependence of the lifetimes, with a clear
indication that holes exhibit longer lifetimes than electrons with the same
excitation energy. Our calculations show that the small overlap of d- and
sp-states below the Fermi level is responsible for the observed enhancement.
Although there is qualitative good agreement of our theoretical predictions and
the measured lifetimes, there still exist some discrepancies pointing to the

The role of occupied d states in the relaxation of hot electrons in Au
We present first-principles calculations of electron-electron scattering
rates of low-energy electrons in Au. Our full band-structure calculations
indicate that a major contribution from occupied d states participating in the
screening of electron-electron interactions yields lifetimes of electrons in Au
with energies of above the Fermi level that are larger than
those of electrons in a free-electron gas by a factor of . This
prediction is in agreement with a recent experimental study of ultrafast
electron dynamics in Au(111) films (J. Cao {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 58},
10948 (1998)), where electron transport has been shown to play a minor role in

Dynamics of Excited Electrons in Copper: Role of Auger Electrons
Within a theoretical model based on the Boltzmann equation, we analyze in
detail the structure of the unusual peak recently observed in the relaxation
time in Cu. In particular, we discuss the role of Auger electrons in the
electron dynamics and its dependence on the d-hole lifetime, the optical
transition matrix elements and the laser pulse duration. We find that the Auger
contribution to the distribution is very sensitive to both the d-hole lifetime
tau_h and the laser pulse duration tau_l and can be expressed as a monotonic
function of tau_l/tau_h. We have found that for a given tau_h, the Auger
contribution is significantly smaller for a short pulse duration than for a
longer one. We show that the relaxation time at the peak depends linearly on
the d-hole lifetime, but interestingly not on the amount of Auger electrons
generated. We provide a simple expression for the relaxation time of excited
electrons which shows that its shape can be understood by a phase space
argument and its amplitude is governed by the d-hole lifetime. We also find
that the height of the peak depends on both the ratio of the optical transition
matrix elements R=|M_{d \to sp}|^2/|M_{sp \to sp}|^2 and the laser pulse
duration. Assuming a reasonable value for the ratio, namely R = 2, and a d-hole
lifetime of tau_h=35 fs, we obtain for the calculated height of the peak Delta
tau_{th}=14 fs, in fair agreement with Delta tau_{exp} \approx 17 fs measured
for polycrystalline Cu.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Hole dynamics in noble metals
We present a detailed analysis of hole dynamics in noble metals (Cu and Au),
by means of first-principles many-body calculations. While holes in a
free-electron gas are known to live shorter than electrons with the same
excitation energy, our results indicate that d-holes in noble metals exhibit
longer inelastic lifetimes than excited sp-electrons, in agreement with
experiment. The density of states available for d-hole decay is larger than
that for the decay of excited electrons; however, the small overlap between d-
and sp-states below the Fermi level increases the d-hole lifetime. The impact
of d-hole dynamics on electron-hole correlation effects, which are of relevance
in the analysis of time-resolved two-photon photoemission experiments, is also

Electronic structure of the MO oxides (M=Mg, Ca, Ti, V) in the GW approximation
The quasiparticle band structures of nonmagnetic monoxides, MO (M=Mg, Ca, Ti,
and V), are calculated by the GW approximation. The band gap and the width of
occupied oxygen 2p states in insulating MgO and CaO agree with experimental
observation. In metallic TiO and VO, conduction bands originated from metal 3d
states become narrower. Then the partial densities of transition metal e_g and
t_2g states show an enhanced dip between the two. The effects of static
screening and dynamical correlation are discussed in detail in comparison with
the results of the Hartree-Fock approximation and the static Coulomb hole plus
screened exchange approximation. The d-d Coulomb interaction is shown to be
very much reduced by on-site and off-site d-electron screening in TiO and VO.
The dielectric function and the energy loss spectrum are also presented and
