Camouflaged galactic CMB foregrounds: total and polarized contributions of the kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich effect
We consider the role of the galactic kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (SZ) effect as
a CMB foreground. While the galactic thermal Sunyaev Zeldovich effect has
previously been studied and discarded as a potential CMB foreground, we find
that the kinetic SZ effect is dominant in the galactic case. We analyse the
detectability of the kinetic SZ effect by means of an optimally matched filter
technique applied to a simulation of an ideal observation. We obtain no
detection, getting a S/N ratio of 0.1, thereby demonstrating that the kinetic
SZ effect can also safely be ignored as a CMB foreground. However we provide
maps of the expected signal for inclusion in future high precision data
processing. Furthermore, we rule out the significant contamination of the
polarised CMB signal by second scattering of galactic kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich
photons, since we show that the scattering of the CMB quadrupole photons by
galactic electrons is a stronger effect than the Sunyaev Zeldovich second
scattering, and has already been shown to produce no significant polarised
contamination. We confirm the latter assessment also by means of an optimally
matched filter.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. submitte
Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance as a Versatile Tool To Identify the Main Chemical Components of Epoxy-Based Thermosets
Cross-linked thermosets are investigated by ¹³C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to determine their structure and to distinguish important epoxy resins and hardening agents. In addition to the epoxy resin and hardening agent, the identification of phosphorus-containing flame retardants is demonstrated by ³¹P solid-state NMR. These studies provide a spectral database for routine use, which is finally applied to analyze commercial products containing an unknown multicomponent system

Diagnostic Performance of Self-Assessment for Constipation in Patients With Long-Term Opioid Treatment
Constipation is a prevalent comorbidity affecting ∼50% of patients with long-
term opioid therapy. In clinical routine different diagnostic instruments are
in use to identify patients under risk. The aim of this study was to assess
the diagnostic performance of an 11-item Likert scale for constipation used as
a self-assessment in opioid-treated patients. This trial was conducted as a
retrospective cohort study in Berlin, Germany. Patients with long-term opioid
therapy treated in 2 university-affiliated outpatient pain facilities at the
Charité hospital were included from January 2013 to August 2013. Constipation
was rated in a self-assessment using a numeric rating scale from 0 to 10 (Con-
NRS) and compared with results from a structured assessment based on ROME-III
criteria. Altogether, 171 patients were included. Incidence of constipation
was 49% of patients. The receiver-operating characteristic of Con-NRS achieved
an area under the curve of 0.814 (AUC 95% confidence interval 0.748–0.880, P <
0.001). Con-NRS ≥ 1 achieved sensitivity and specificity of 79.7% and 77.2%,
respectively. The positive predictive value and the negative predictive value
were 70.3% and 81.6%, respectively. Overall diagnostic performance of a
concise 11-item Likert scale for constipation was moderate. Although patients
with long-term opioid therapy are familiar with numeric rating scales, a
significant number of patients with constipation were not identified. The
instrument may be additionally useful to facilitate individualized therapeutic
decision making and to control therapeutic success when measured repetitively
Surface modification of the laser sintering standard powder polyamide 12 by plasma treatments
Polyamide 12 (PA12) powder was exposed for up to 3 h to low pressure air plasma treatment (LP-PT) and several minutes by two different atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJ) i.e., kINPen (K-APPJ) and Hairline (H-APPJ). The chemical and physical changes resulting from LP-PT were observed by a combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Hot Stage Microscopy (HSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which demonstrated significant changes between the plasma treated and untreated PA12 powders. PA12 exposed to LP-PT showed an increase in wettability, was relatively porous, and possessed a higher density, which resulted from the surface functionalization and materials removal during the plasma exposure. However, it showed poor melt behavior under heating conditions typical for Laser Sintering. In contrast, brief PJ treatments demonstrated similar changes in porosity, but crucially, retained the favorable melt characteristics of PA12 powder
