[Résumé: Cet article discute de façon générale les cas dans lesquels les symboles peuvent être utilisés de façon avantageuse dans le raisonnement logique et mathématique, et aspire, par un examen des symboles déjà existants, à déterminer quelques règles ou principes, d’abord, quant à l’opportunité d’introduire de nouveaux symboles, puis, quant au types de symboles qui doivent être sélectionnés. A Cross-Training Program Does Not Alter Self-Reported Physical Activity Levels in Elementary School Children
The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a school-based cross-training program on body mass index (BMI), attitudes toward physical activity (ATPA), and physical activity (PA) levels of children in the 4th and 5th grades. Children (N = 118) were divided into control (n = 60) and experimental (n = 58) groups based on class availability. While the control group continued academic classes as usual, the experimental group participated in cross-training involving resistance training (RT), calisthenics, and stretching twice a week for 10 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention measures included height, mass, ATPA, and PA. BMI was calculated and ATPA and PA levels were assessed via questionnaire. The groups did not differ significantly (p \u3e .05) for either pre- or post-intervention regarding BMI, ATPA, and PA. However, BMI and PA levels significantly increased over time for both groups (p ≤ .05). Overall, cross-training in a school setting may be a safe and enjoyable option for physical activity participation. BMI and PA increases were likely the result of the natural growth process and seasonal weather pattern changes, respectively. Nevertheless, the cross-training did not detract from PA levels and may have led to an overall increase in PA levels. As subdomain analyses revealed decreased attitude toward health and fitness in the experimental group, shorter programs involving RT with various protocols are recommended
Galaxy Cluster Scaling Relations between Bolocam Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect and Chandra X-ray Measurements
We present scaling relations between the integrated Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect
(SZE) signal, , its X-ray analogue, , and total mass, , for the 45 galaxy clusters in
the Bolocam X-ray-SZ (BOXSZ) sample. All parameters are integrated within
. values are measured using SZE data collected with
Bolocam, operating at 140 GHz at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO).
The temperature, , and mass, , of the intracluster
medium are determined using X-ray data collected with Chandra, and is derived from assuming a constant gas mass fraction. Our
analysis accounts for several potential sources of bias, including: selection
effects, contamination from radio point sources, and the loss of SZE signal due
to noise filtering and beam-smoothing effects. We measure the
-- scaling to have a power-law index of , and
a fractional intrinsic scatter in of at fixed , both of which are consistent with previous analyses. We also measure the
scaling between and , finding a power-law index of
and a fractional intrinsic scatter in at fixed mass of
. While recent SZE scaling relations using X-ray mass proxies have
found power-law indices consistent with the self-similar prediction of 5/3, our
measurement stands apart by differing from the self-similar prediction by
approximately 5. Given the good agreement between the measured
-- scalings, much of this discrepancy appears to be caused
by differences in the calibration of the X-ray mass proxies adopted for each

What is the Best Measure of Daytime Sleepiness in Adults With Heart Failure?

To identify the best screening measure of daytime sleepiness in adults with heart failure (HF). Data sources
A total of 280 adults with HF completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Stanford Sleepiness Scale, and a single Likert item measuring daytime sleepiness. The sensitivity and specificity of these self-report measures were assessed in relation to a measure of daytime dysfunction from poor sleep quality. Conclusions
Only 16% of the sample reported significant daytime dysfunction because of poor sleep quality. Those reporting daytime dysfunction were likely to be younger (p \u3c .001), to be unmarried (p = .002), to have New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class IV HF (p = .015), and to report low income (p = .006) and fewer hours of sleep (p = .015). The measure of daytime sleepiness that was most sensitive to daytime dysfunction was a single Likert item measured on a 10-point (1–10) scale. Patients with a score ≥4 were 2.4 times more likely to have daytime dysfunction than those with a score \u3c4. Implications for practice
Complaints of daytime dysfunction because of poor sleep are not common in adults with HF. Routine use of a single question about daytime sleepiness can help nurse practitioners to identify those HF patients with significant sleep issues that may require further screening
A model for transition of 5 '-nuclease domain of DNA polymerase I from inert to active modes
Bacteria contain DNA polymerase I (PolI), a single polypeptide chain consisting of similar to 930 residues, possessing DNA-dependent DNA polymerase, 3'-5' proofreading and 5'-3' exonuclease (also known as flap endonuclease) activities. PolI is particularly important in the processing of Okazaki fragments generated during lagging strand replication and must ultimately produce a double-stranded substrate with a nick suitable for DNA ligase to seal. PolI's activities must be highly coordinated both temporally and spatially otherwise uncontrolled 5'-nuclease activity could attack a nick and produce extended gaps leading to potentially lethal double-strand breaks. To investigate the mechanism of how PolI efficiently produces these nicks, we present theoretical studies on the dynamics of two possible scenarios or models. In one the flap DNA substrate can transit from the polymerase active site to the 5'-nuclease active site, with the relative position of the two active sites being kept fixed; while the other is that the 5'-nuclease domain can transit from the inactive mode, with the 5'-nuclease active site distant from the cleavage site on the DNA substrate, to the active mode, where the active site and substrate cleavage site are juxtaposed. The theoretical results based on the former scenario are inconsistent with the available experimental data that indicated that the majority of 5'-nucleolytic processing events are carried out by the same PolI molecule that has just extended the upstream primer terminus. By contrast, the theoretical results on the latter model, which is constructed based on available structural studies, are consistent with the experimental data. We thus conclude that the latter model rather than the former one is reasonable to describe the cooperation of the PolI's polymerase and 5'-3' exonuclease activities. Submillimeter Follow-up of WISE-Selected Hyperluminous Galaxies
We have used the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) to follow-up a
sample of WISE-selected, hyperluminous galaxies, so called W1W2-dropout
galaxies. This is a rare (~ 1000 all-sky) population of galaxies at high
redshift (peaks at z=2-3), that are faint or undetected by WISE at 3.4 and 4.6
um, yet are clearly detected at 12 and 22 um. The optical spectra of most of
these galaxies show significant AGN activity. We observed 14 high-redshift (z >
1.7) W1W2-dropout galaxies with SHARC-II at 350 to 850 um, with 9 detections;
and observed 18 with Bolocam at 1.1 mm, with five detections. Warm Spitzer
follow-up of 25 targets at 3.6 and 4.5 um, as well as optical spectra of 12
targets are also presented in the paper. Combining WISE data with observations
from warm Spitzer and CSO, we constructed their mid-IR to millimeter spectral
energy distributions (SEDs). These SEDs have a consistent shape, showing
significantly higher mid-IR to submm ratios than other galaxy templates,
suggesting a hotter dust temperature. We estimate their dust temperatures to be
60-120 K using a single-temperature model. Their infrared luminosities are well
over 10^{13} Lsun. These SEDs are not well fitted with existing galaxy
templates, suggesting they are a new population with very high luminosity and
hot dust. They are likely among the most luminous galaxies in the Universe. We
argue that they are extreme cases of luminous, hot dust-obscured galaxies
(DOGs), possibly representing a short evolutionary phase during galaxy merging
and evolution. A better understanding of their long-wavelength properties needs
