Preparation of Ion Imprinted SPR Sensor for Real-Time Detection of Silver(I) Ion from Aqueous Solution

    Get PDF
The aim of the submitted study is to develop molecular imprinting based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for real-time silver ion detection. For this purpose polymeric nanofilm layer on the gold SPR chip surface was prepared via UV polymerization of acrylic acid at 395 nm for 30 minutes. N-methacryloyl- L cysteine used as the functional monomer to recognize the silver(I) ions from the aqueous solutions and methylene bisacrylamide used as the crosslinker for obtaining structural rigidity of the formed cavities. Silver(I) solutions with different concentrations were applied to SPR system to investigate the efficiency of the imprinted SPR sensor in real time. For the control experiments, non-imprinted SPR sensor was also prepared as described above without addition of template “silver(I) ions”. Prepared SPR sensors were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM). In order to show the selectivity of the silver(I) imprinted SPR sensor, competitive adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II) ions was investigated. Using Phenomenology in Contemporary Arts Reserach & Pedagogy Workshop 2: Phenomenological encounters with non-western and diasporic objects-images-architeves-&-artworlds (Phenomenology, displacement and decoloniality)

This was the second of a two-part workshop entitled 'Using Phenomenology in Contemporary Arts Research and Pedagogy' jointly facilited with colleagues Jeffrey Say and Dr Clare Veal from the Asian Art Histories MA Programme at LASALLE College of the arts, Singapore. While the first workshop was held at LASALLE for LASALLE staff and students, for the second and Goldsmiths LASALLE staff and students travelled to Goldsmiths and were joined by students from Goldsmiths and SOAS (where I'd also run workshops). This workshop developed themes opened up in Workshop One. In our first workshop, phenomenological strategies were introduced in terms of their capacity to help us perceive, apprehend and think ‘from below’ – that is, pre-critically and pre-objectively, from a place in which various personal and cultural presuppositions about meaning and value are being dismantled, and in which differently configured visual/descriptive strategies are foregrounded as ways of maximizing sensitivity to source-materials. In this workshop we explored how phenomenological strategies can help us as we think about objects, images and art-related practices within non-western, postcolonial and diasporic contexts. In Part One, 'Situated Research: Institutional and archival histories and contexts: colonial and decolonising perspectives' we focused on the importance of acknowledging the contexts in which we carry out our research. Therefore, we attended to the colonial and decolonising histories of Goldsmiths itself and of the institutions that preceded Goldsmiths but are now part of our campus (like Deptford Town Hall, where the workshop was held and its naval and colonial associations and as the site in 1916 for WW1 conscientious objector tribunals). Included here was a conversation about this concerns with Natasha Hoare, Curator of Goldsmiths' new Centre for Contemporary Art and we were introduced to an archive of materials of ASEAN origin in Goldsmiths' Textile Collection by GTC curator Jane Cameron and Lesley Ruthven, Special Collections & Music Librarian. In Part Two, 'Working Phenomenologically with Non-Western "Diasporic" Objects' we worked with objects from the GTC and Jeffrey Say and Clare Veal ran workshops related to researching phenomenologically in their own areas of expertise of contemporary Singaporean and Contemporary Thai art and visual culture. In Part Three, 'Phenomenology and Decoloniality' we brought phenomenological perspectives into conversation with scholarship on decoloniality, notably Walter D. Mignolo’s paper ‘Decoloniality and Phenomenology: The Geopolitics of Knowing and Epistemic /Ontological Colonial Differences’ (2018), and explored issues of epistemic violence. With these concerns in mind, we also visited and reflected on Kader Attia's exhibition The Museum of Emotion which was on show at London's Hayward Gallery

Critical Points in the Management of Pseudohypoaldosteronism Type 1

    Get PDF
Pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA-1, MIM #264350) is caused by defective transepithelial sodium transport. Affected patients develop life-threatening neonatal-onset salt loss, hyperkalemia, acidosis, and elevated aldosterone levels due to end-organ resistance to aldosterone. In this report, we present a patient diagnosed as PHA-1 who had clinical and laboratory findings compatible with the diagnosis and had genetically proven autosomal recessive PHA-1. The patient received high doses of sodium supplementation and potassium-lowering therapies; however, several difficulties were encountered in the management of this case. The aim of this presentation was to point out the potential pitfalls in the treatment of such patients in the clinical practice and to recommend solutions

Sexual Life And Dysfunction After Maternal Morbidity: A Systematic Review.

    Get PDF
Because there is a lack of knowledge on the long-term consequences of maternal morbidity/near miss episodes on women´s sexual life and function we conducted a systematic review with the purpose of identifying the available evidence on any sexual impairment associated with complications from pregnancy and childbirth. Systematic review on aspects of women sexual life after any maternal morbidity and/or maternal near miss, during different time periods after delivery. The search was carried out until May 22(nd), 2015 including studies published from 1995 to 2015. No language or study design restrictions were applied. Maternal morbidity as exposure was split into general or severe/near miss. Female sexual outcomes evaluated were dyspareunia, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) scores and time to resume sexual activity after childbirth. Qualitative syntheses for outcomes were provided whenever possible. A total of 2,573 studies were initially identified, and 14 were included for analysis after standard selection procedures for systematic review. General morbidity was mainly related to major perineal injury (3(rd) or 4(th) degree laceration, 12 studies). A clear pattern for severity evaluation of maternal morbidity could not be distinguished, unless when a maternal near miss concept was used. Women experiencing maternal morbidity had more frequently dyspareunia and resumed sexual activity later, when compared to women without morbidity. There were no differences in FSFI scores between groups. Meta-analysis could not be performed, since included studies were too heterogeneous regarding study design, evaluation of exposure and/or outcome and time span. Investigation of long-term repercussions on women's sexual life aspects after maternal morbidity has been scarcely performed, however indicating worse outcomes for those experiencing morbidity. Further standardized evaluation of these conditions among maternal morbidity survivors may provide relevant information for clinical follow-up and reproductive planning for women.1530

Improved local search approaches to solve the post enrolment course timetabling problem

    Get PDF
In this work, we are addressing the post enrollment course timetabling (PE-CTT) problem. We combine different local search algorithms into an iterative two stage procedure. In the first stage, Tabu Search with Sampling and Perturbation (TSSP) is used to generate feasible solutions. In the second stage, we propose an improved variant of Simulated Annealing (SA), which we call Simulated Annealing with Reheating (SAR), to improve the solution quality of feasible solutions. SAR has three features: a novel neighborhood examination scheme, a new way of estimating local optima and a reheating scheme. SAR eliminates the need for extensive tuning as is often required in conventional SA. The proposed methodologies are tested on the three most studied datasets from the scientific literature. Our algorithms perform well and our results are competitive, if not better, compared to the benchmarks set by the state of the art methods. New best known results are provided for many instances

Alternating, private alternating, and quantum alternating realtime automata

    Get PDF
We present new results on realtime alternating, private alternating, and quantum alternating automaton models. Firstly, we show that the emptiness problem for alternating one-counter automata on unary alphabets is undecidable. Then, we present two equivalent definitions of realtime private alternating finite automata (PAFAs). We show that the emptiness problem is undecidable for PAFAs. Furthermore, PAFAs can recognize some nonregular unary languages, including the unary squares language, which seems to be difficult even for some classical counter automata with two-way input. Regarding quantum finite automata (QFAs), we show that the emptiness problem is undecidable both for universal QFAs on general alphabets, and for alternating QFAs with two alternations on unary alphabets. On the other hand, the same problem is decidable for nondeterministic QFAs on general alphabets. We also show that the unary squares language is recognized by alternating QFAs with two alternations

Exosomes in head and neck cancer. Updating and revisiting

    Get PDF
Exosomes have gone from being considered simple containers of intracellular waste substances to be considered important carriers of cellular signals. Its broad capacity to promote tumour growth, both in situ and metastatic, has greatly intensified scientific research on them. In the same way and depending on its content, its tumour suppressive properties have opened a window of light and hope in the fight against cancer. In the present review we try to gather in a simple and understandable way the most relevant knowledge to date on the role of exosomes in oral squamous cell carcinoma, helping to understand their process of formation, release and activity on the tumour microenvironment

Strongly Correlated Cerium Systems: Non-Kondo Mechanism for Moment Collapse

We present an ab initio based method which gives clear insight into the interplay between the hybridization, the coulomb exchange, and the crystal-field interactions, as the degree of 4f localization is varied across a series of strongly correlated cerium systems. The results for the ordered magnetic moments, magnetic structure, and ordering temperatures are in excellent agreement with experiment, including the occurence of a moment collapse of non-Kondo origin. In contrast, standard ab initio density functional calculations fail to predict, even qualitatively, the trend of the unusual magentic properties.Comment: A shorter version of this has been submitted to PR
