Milling Characteristics of High and Low Quality Rice

Harvest moisture contents (HMCs) have been proven to play a role in rice quality, especially affecting head rice yield (HRY) due to fissuring or immature kernels. Differences in milling characteristics between samples having high and low level milling quality were studied in this experiment. Two hybrid, long-grain cultivars (CL XL729 and CL XL745) and two pureline, long-grain cultivars (CL 181 and Wells) were harvested at near optimal and low HMCs, representing high and low milling quality, respectively. Lots were dried to approximately 12.5 ± 0.5% and milled in triplicate for durations of 10, 20, 30, and 40 s. Results showed that low quality rice achieved a greater degree of milling (DOM) than high quality rice when milled for the same duration. Low quality rice also reached a given surface lipid content (SLC) at a faster rate as supported by greater SLC reduction rates. As DOM increased, milled rice yield (MRY) of low quality rice decreased at a statistically greater rate than that of high quality rice. The rate at which HRY decreased, however, was not greatly impacted by milling quality as a function of HMC

Byte a Carrot for Change: Uprooting Problems in Data Privacy Regulations

There is a growing gap between technology advancement and a lagging regulatory system. This is particularly problematic in consumer data privacy regulating. Companies hold collected consumer data and determine its use largely without accountability. As a result, ethical questions that carry society-shaping impact are answered in-house, under the influence of groupthink, and are withheld from anyone else weighing in. This Note poses a solution that would address multiple data privacy regulation issues. Namely, an incentive approach would help even out the information-imbalanced system. Incentives are used as tools throughout intellectual property law to foster commercial progress, discourage trade secrets, and protect consumers. These goals can also be achieved through integrating an incentive into consumer data privacy regulating. This Note first highlights major issues in the current consumer data privacy federal regulatory landscape. Next, this Note proposes and outlines a narrow FTC whistleblower incentive, unearthing how an incentive would alleviate each major regulatory issue. Finally, this Note discusses eight compelling reasons for the incentive, and ultimately confronts and rebuts its drawbacks

Teachers\u27 Beliefs Towards Grade Retention in a Rural Elementary School

This study examined the beliefs of kindergarten through fourth grade teachers regarding effects of retention on academic, emotional, and social areas, as well as alternative interventions to retention. The teachers were asked to take a web-based pre-survey on grade retention. After completing the initial survey they were then asked to watch a web-based PowerPoint presentation on research-based evidence regarding retention before taking a web-based postsurvey. The results of this study revealed that teacher‟s beliefs towards grade retention were not significantly changed when presented with a research-based PowerPoint presentation regarding the negative effects of retention practices, as measured by the pre and post-survey. The comments on the surveys backed up the statistics stating that there were no significant changes in opinion

We now have two years' experience of the Sexual Risk Order and the Sexual Harm Prevention Order, being the two civil orders brought in to replace and consolidate the old Sexual Offences Prevention Orders (SOPO), the Risk of Sexual Harm Orders (RSHO) and the Foreign Travel Order (FTO). This article looks at the background to these orders that have given the police new powers and the process by which the law was changed to bring in the new orders

The Statistical Analysis Comparing the Heat Index Temperatures to the Rare Football Related Heat Illnesses in Prescott, Arkansas

During this independent study we as a group analyzed the humidity index and injury report correlations during the 2020 football season at Prescott High School in Prescott, Arkansas. We gathered reliable data for the first 2 games at the very beginning of the season and the last 2 games at the end. We analyzed all the numbers from the heat index and humidity with the number of injuries occurring in a game. At the end of the season we gathered all of our data and came together as a group to construct this independent study in hopes to help us prevent future injuries in upcoming seasons. Place leadership and regional economic development: a framework for cross-regional analysis

This paper examines the leadership of places – cities, regions, communities – in Australia, Finland, Germany, Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom and explores the capacity of vignettes to generate new, theoretical and empirical insights. It uses vignettes to identify the features of place leadership evident in 12 case studies across six nations. The research finds significant commonalities in place leadership with respect to the importance attached to boundary spanning, the role of government officials in responding to the prospect of regional decline or growth and how the nature of the challenge confronting a locality determines the adequacy of the response

In recent decades, American historians have asserted that a broad chasm existed between the rhetoric of equality in Jacksonian America and the actual economic reality that existed. Several years ago, Edward Pessen observed that the so-called Era of the Common Man brought no startling social or economic improvements for the common sort of people. More recently, authors like Alan Dawley, Paul E. Johnson, and Sean Wilentz have argued that not only was there no improvement in the conditions for working men, but the universe of options for skilled journeymen was undergoing a radical contraction, which endangered their integrity as an independent productive class.* Furthermore, eroding economic conditions seem to have led to a decline in the commitment to democratic ideology. Michael Holt posits that economic dislocation of the artisan class as a result of the industrial revolution and increased pressure for jobs created by rising immigration led many Americans to support programs which were designed to reduce immigration, or at least to reduce the political influence of incoming immigrants. This support resulted in the rise of such antidemocratic organizations as the nativist societies which eventually formed the American Know-Nothing party.

'Cost' calculations as a barrier to gaining information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 from the Police in England and Wales

Previous research has identified the methodological value of using the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to gain access to information held by the police, as well as its limitations. Very little attention, however, has been paid to the ways in which the police calculate the cost of FOI compliance and utilise cost exemptions to deny access to information. In this article, we present our empirical findings from our FOI requests made to the police in England and Wales that demonstrates how cost calculations became a barrier to our request for information. In addition, the responses received show that there were significant differences between the calculated cost needed to retrieve the information, the reasons given for the refusal for access to information, as well as regional variations with FOI compliance. We argue that excessive cost calculations, given as a reason for not providing access to information by the police, is a 'metric' for institutional limitations in data recording and data management. Furthermore, in a time of 'austerity' we suggest that with increases in police funding cuts the calculated cost of FOI compliance will increase, thereby undermining police transparency and accountability. We therefore question claims that the FOIA is a 'powerful' tool that social researchers should use more often
