    Desperate father or murderous fool? The genesis of one migratory legend of poverty, fecundity and multiple birth

This study explores attitudes expressed in one specific Devon legend, concerning the multiple birth of seven children, as it was told in early seventeenth-century England. A diachronic study of related Western European narratives offers fresh insights. These earlier legends reveal how certain elements were discarded whilst others were retained within this migratory tale. The focal point of this story evolves over time from the medieval stigma attached to multiple births and towards the relationship between faith, fate, family size and household economics

    Construction and Calibration of a Streaked Optical Spectrometer for Shock Temperature

    Here we describe the implementation and calibration of a streaked visible spectrometer (SVS) for optical pyrometry and emission/absorption spectroscopy on light gas gun platforms in the UC Davis Shock Compression Laboratory. The diagnostic consists of an optical streak camera coupled to a spectrometer to provide temporally and spectrally-resolved records of visible emission from dynamically-compressed materials. Fiber optic coupling to the sample enables a small diagnostic footprint on the target face and flexibility of operation on multiple launch systems without the need for open optics. We present the details of calibration (time, wavelength and spectral radiance) for absolute temperature determination and present benchmark measurements of system performance.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures Davies, E., et al.     The Holocene history of the North American Monsoon: 'known knowns' and 'known unknowns' in understanding its spatial and temporal complexity

    Evidence for climatic change across the North American Monsoon (NAM) and adjacent areas is reviewed, drawing on continental and marine records and the application of climate models. Patterns of change at 12,000, 9000, 6000 and 4000 cal yr BP are presented to capture the nature of change from the Younger Dryas (YD) and through the mid-Holocene. At the YD, conditions were cooler overall, wetter in the north and drier in the south, while moving into the Holocene wetter conditions became established in the south and then spread north as the NAM strengthened. Until c. 8,000 cal yr BP, the Laurentide Ice Sheet influenced precipitation in the north by pushing the Bermuda High further south. The peak extent of the NAM seems to have occurred around 6000 cal yr BP. 4000 cal yr BP marks the start of important changes across the NAM region, with drying in the north and the establishment of the clear differences between the summer-rain dominated south and central areas and the north, where winter rain is more important. This differentiation between south and north is crucial to understanding many climate responses across the NAM. This increasing variability is coincident with the declining influence of orbital forcing. 4000 cal yr BP also marks the onset of significant anthropogenic activity in many areas. For the last 2000 years, the focus is on higher temporal resolution change, with strong variations across the region. The Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) is characterised by centennial scale ‘megadrought’ across the southwest USA, associated with cooler tropical Pacific SSTs and persistent La Niña type conditions. Proxy data from southern Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean reveal generally wetter conditions, whereas records from the highlands of central Mexico and much of the Yucatan are typified by long -term drought. The Little Ice Age (LIA), in the north, was characterised by cooler, wetter winter conditions that have been linked with increased frequency of El Niño’s. Proxy records in the central and southern regions reveal generally dry LIA conditions, consistent with cooler SSTs in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. This synthesis demonstrates that in some periods, one major forcing can dominate across the whole area (e.g. insolation in the early-mid Holocene), but at other times there is strong variability in patterns of change due to the differential impact of forcings such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) on precipitation seasonality

    Classical and nonclassical randomness in quantum measurements

    The space of positive operator-valued measures on the Borel sets of a compact (or even locally compact) Hausdorff space with values in the algebra of linear operators acting on a d-dimensional Hilbert space is studied from the perspectives of classical and non-classical convexity through a transform Γ\Gamma that associates any positive operator-valued measure with a certain completely positive linear map of the homogeneous C*-algebra C(X)B(H)C(X)\otimes B(H) into B(H)B(H). This association is achieved by using an operator-valued integral in which non-classical random variables (that is, operator-valued functions) are integrated with respect to positive operator-valued measures and which has the feature that the integral of a random quantum effect is itself a quantum effect. A left inverse Ω\Omega for Γ\Gamma yields an integral representation, along the lines of the classical Riesz Representation Theorem for certain linear functionals on C(X)C(X), of certain (but not all) unital completely positive linear maps ϕ:C(X)B(H)B(H)\phi:C(X)\otimes B(H) \rightarrow B(H).     Dynamical orbital evolution scenarios of the wide-orbit eccentric planet HR 5183b

    The recently-discovered giant exoplanet HR5183b exists on a wide, highly-eccentric orbit (a=18a=18\,au, e=0.84e=0.84). Its host star possesses a common proper-motion companion which is likely on a bound orbit. In this paper, we explore scenarios for the excitation of the eccentricity of the planet in binary systems such as this, considering planet-planet scattering, Lidov-Kozai cycles from the binary acting on a single-planet system, or Lidov-Kozai cycles acting on a two-planet system that also undergoes scattering. Planet-planet scattering, in the absence of a binary companion, has a 2.87.2%2.8-7.2\% probability of pumping eccentricities to the observed values in our simulations, depending on the relative masses of the two planets. Lidov-Kozai cycles from the binary acting on an initially circular orbit can excite eccentricities to the observed value, but require very specific orbital configurations for the binary and overall there is a low probability of catching the orbit at the high observed high eccentricity (0.6%0.6\%). The best case is provided by planet-planet scattering in the presence of a binary companion: here, the scattering provides the surviving planet with an initial eccentricity boost that is subsequently further increased by Kozai cycles from the binary. We find a success rate of 14.5%14.5\% for currently observing e0.84e\ge0.84 in this set-up. The single-planet plus binary and two-planet plus binary cases are potentially distinguishable if the mutual inclination of the binary and the planet can be measured, as the latter permits a broader range of mutual inclinations. The combination of scattering and Lidov-Kozai forcing may also be at work in other wide-orbit eccentric giant planets, which have a high rate of stellar binary companions.Comment: Accepted to MNRAS.     Trigger-Point Self-Care for Chronic Neck Pain: Pilot and Feasibility

    poster abstractMassage is a non-pharmacological approach for neck pain with building evidence. Trigger points (TrPts) are thought to be associated with chronic neck pain (CNP) and can be treated with massage techniques. Due to massage’s out-of-pocket costs, TrPt self-care (TrPtSC) may serve as a cost-effective treatment that may reach broader populations. No study has examined a) feasibility of conducting TrPtSC training in a research setting, b) ability of such programs to meet stated training objectives, c) adherence to personalized TrPtSC plans, and d) TrPtSC outcomes for CNP. A pilot observational, pre- post-intervention cohort study with 1-, 4-, and 8-week follow-ups was implemented. Participants: self-identified adults with CNP and Neck Disability Index (NDI) ≥4. Measures: pre-/post-TrPtSC training objectives survey, TrPtSC daily self-report log, NDI and 11-point pain rating scale. Intervention: three-hour TrPtSC training with interactive lecture, demonstration, supervised practice, and private assessment with individualized TrPtSC plan development. Handouts and tools were provided for training and home TrPtSC. Participants documented their individualized TrPtSC plan adherence daily. Five participants (women=3; ages 22-58; White=5) enrolled in the study and two separate group training sessions occurred (n=3 & 2, respectively). By the end of the TrPtSC training, all participants agreed or strongly agreed they achieved all intended training objectives. Baseline NDI categorized all participants as mild neck pain with disability (mean NDI=10.4±2.1). Week-1 follow-up: 1 participant had no NDI change, 1 participant worsened, and 3 reported 23-50% improvement. All participants had improved NDI at week-4 and week-8 compared to baseline. Three participants reported 23-30% improvement by study’s end. Our TrPtSC group training approach met objectives and our study design is feasible for larger scale trials. Results suggest TrPtSC may improve CNP outcomes. More robust studies with greater than mild neck pain and disability participants are needed to estimate effect sizes and adequately power larger comparison trials

    Population genetic structure between Yap and Palau for the coral Acropora hyacinthus

    Information on connectivity is becoming increasingly in demand as marine protected areas are being designed as an integral part of a network to protect marine resources at the ecosystem level. Larval dispersal and population structure, however, remain very difficult to assess. Here, we tested the predictions of a detailed oceanographic connectivity model of larval dispersal and coral recruitment within Palau and between Palau and Yap, which was developed to support the review of the existing network of marine protected areas in Palau. We used high throughput microsatellite genotyping of the coral Acropora hyacinthus to characterize population genetic structure. Pairwise F ′ ST values between Palau and Yap (0.10), Palau and Ngulu (0.09) and Yap and Ngulu (0.09) were all significant and similar to pairwise F ′ ST values of sites within Palau (0.02–0.12) and within Yap (0.02–0.09) highlighting structure at island scale and indicating that recruitment may be even more localized than previously anticipated. A bottleneck test did not reveal any signs of a founder effect between Yap and Palau. Overall, the data supports the idea that recovery of A. hyacinthus in Palau did not come exclusively from a single source but most likely came from a combination of areas, including sites within Palau. In light of these results there seems to be very little connectivity around the barrier reef and management recommendation would be to increase the number or the size of MPAs within Palau
