[EN] The high erosion rates found in the agriculture land make valuable the use of mulches to control the soil and water losses. Coffee husk (Coffea canephora var. robusta) can be one of those mulches. This paper evaluates how to apply the mulch in order to obtain the best effectiveness. An experimental factorial design 4×3×2 with two replicates was designed in a greenhouse with a total number of 48 cases. All the samples were deposited in trays of 0.51m2 and applied a simulated rain of 122mmh−1 during 21 min. The factors examined were the following: four soil classes; three treatments buried (B), surface (S) and non-residue (C) and the presence (WC) or absence (WOC) of the soil surface crusting. The coffee husk residue (S and B treatments) reduced runoff by 10.2 and 46% respectively, soil losses by 78.3 and 88.7% and sediment concentration by 77 and 84.4 %. The infiltration rate increased on average by 104 and 167 %, and time to runoff by 1.58 and 2.07 min respectively. Coffee husk is an efficient mulch to reduce the soil and water losses, although it could not completely cushion the influence of crust.

The experiences of men who self-harm:A qualitative analysis

    Get PDF
This thesis is comprised of four chapters, including a systematic literature review, an empirical research paper, a critical appraisal, and the ethics application section. The systematic literature review offers a meta-synthesis of the published literature exploring the experiences of men who self-harm in forensic secure hospitals and prisons. Five papers were included in the review, four were conducted in prisons and one in a forensic secure hospital. The results were synthesised using a meta-ethnographic approach. The empirical paper is a qualitative investigation that explores the experiences of young men who self-harm, attending to the relational and communicative aspects of these behaviours. This study utilised semistructured interviews to gather the perspectives of five young men who self-harm and the data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The critical appraisal offers an overview of both papers, highlighting the main findings, as well as difficulties that arose during the research process, and the key clinical and research implications of the whole thesis. Personal reflections are also offered. The last section includes the ethics application process of the empirical paper and the supporting documents utilised in the process

    El estigma del suicidio

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Reasons for donating blood amongst medical staff

In Spain the number of blood donations and new donors has decreased over the past few years. If we want to keep the levels stable, a low-risk population group is needed and medical staff would be a good candidate group. The aim of this study has been to describe what motivates medical staff to donate and for non-donors to identify the barriers that prevent them from doing so, and what might motivate them. A descriptive transversal study, carried out in Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, from March to December 2015. A sample size of 300 individuals was considered to be significant. Of the sample, 85.3% (256) were female, and 14.7% (44) male, with an average age of 41.18 (SD: 10.66). Of these, 23.3% (70) were assistant nurses, 60% (180) nurses, 14.3% (43) doctors and 2.3% (7) were of other professional categories. Regarding blood donation: 48.3% (145) have never been donors, compared to 51.6% (155) who have donated blood. Of the 155 medical professionals that were donors 60% (93) began to donate as a result of altruism, and 13.5% (21) through the influence of a someone close, furthermore the 63.8% (99) have continued motivated by altruism or social responsibility. In relation to non-donors, 52.4% (76) haven’t donated due to medical causes and 12.4% (18) due to a lack of time. Upon asking what might motivate to donate: 31.3% (45) would donate if a family member needed a blood transfusion and 23.4% (34) in an emergency situation. The results can help us establish strategies to convert this sector of the population in to regular blood donors
