Design and Manufacturing of an APTF to Test Fluid Behaviour in Microgravity Environment

The present paper deals with the design and manufacturing of an APTF (Advanced Plateau Tank Facility) in order to carrying out earth experiments, previous to space experiments, of fluid behaviour in microgravity environment. This work has been done in collaboration between Manufacturing and Microgravity Laboratories in the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and analyses the requirements and restrictions that must be considered for an APTF design and manufacture. Mechanism employed in each part of the prototype are described in detail, emphasising those that suppose new solutions rather previous designs

Principles for Consciousness in Integrated Cognitive Control

In this article we will argue that given certain conditions for the evolution of bi- \ud ological controllers, these will necessarily evolve in the direction of incorporating \ud consciousness capabilities. We will also see what are the necessary mechanics for \ud the provision of these capabilities and extrapolate this vision to the world of artifi- \ud cial systems postulating seven design principles for conscious systems. Against Animats

Animats are artificial animals, a contraction of anima-materials. The term includes physical robots and virtual simulations. Animat research, a subset of Artificial Life studies, has become rather popular since Rodney Brooks' seminal paper "Intelligence without representation". The word was coined by S.W. Wilson in 1991, in the first proceedings of the Simulation of Adaptive Behaviour, which was also called From Animals to Animats

Paléfato y la interpretación racionalista del mito: características y antecedentes

Palephatus, "Sucesos increíbles", es la obra más importante que sobrevive de los escritos de la escuela racionalista de interpretación de la mitología griega. Tras de una introducción al escritor y a su obra, este trabajo analiza las principales características de los métodos de interpretación utilizados por Palephatus y los relaciona con las corrientes de pensamiento que podrían haber influido en él. A pesar de un cierto solapamiento con Everism, Palephatus no puede ser identificado totalmente con este movimiento, porque es ecléctico y nunca pone en duda la existencia de los dioses. La influencia de Aristóteles, de quien pudo ser discípulo, se puede sentir en el espíritu de sus investigaciones. Sin embargo, en relación a los hechos concretos, de los que se pueden extraer conclusiones, no parece que el filósofo siguiera los mismos procedimientos hermenéuticos que Palephatus, pues sólo se encuentran rastros de la exégesis alegórica. La tradición historiográfica es más próxima a Palephatus por la explicación concreta que hace de los mitos. Consecuentemente, la tradición historiográfica podría ser el precedente del sistema seguido por Palephatus.Palephatus “On Incredible Phenomena” is the most important work that survives of those within the rationalist school of the interpretation of Greek myth. After an introduction to the writer and his work, this paper looks at the main characteristics of the methods of interpretation used by Palephatus and relates them to the schools of thought which might have influenced him. Despite a certain overlapping with Everism, Palephatus cannot be wholly identified with this movement, for he is eclectic and never questions the existence of the gods. The influence of Aristotle, whose disciple he might have been, can be felt in the spirit of his enquiries. However, as far as the limited facts permit conclusions to be drawn, it does not appear that the philosopher followed the same hermeneutic procedures as Palephatus, since only traces of allegorical exegesis can be found. The historiographical tradition is the closest to Palephatus in the agreement found on the concrete explanation of myths. Tradición indirecta y error de memoria en crítica textual griega: observaciones metodológicas

Una versión preliminar de este trabajo fue presentada en el Congreso Internacional de “Crítica Textual y Edición de Textos Griegos”, celebrado en la Universidad de Extremadura (Cáceres) los días 7, 8 y 9 de junio de 2007.Las citaciones, elemento característico de la tradición indirecta, desempeñan un papel importante en la crítica textual griega y latina, aunque en ocasiones no reciben la suficiente atención de los filólogos. Este artículo ofrece una exposición de la metodología referente a los factores que deben ser tenidos en cuenta para determinar si una citación constituye un testimonio válido para la “constitutio textus”. Se examinan varios criterios sobre la validez de las citaciones, partiendo de problemas textuales concretos que han sido tomados en su mayoría de la literatura griega. El autor introduce en la discusión metodológica un nuevo criterio, denominado “palabra tabú” (concepto freudiano) y le concede un tratamiento especial, como posibilidad nueva de explicar errores de memoria en las citas, o bien faltas de escriba.Quotations, a characteristic element of indirect tradition, play an important role in Latin and Greek textual criticism, although they sometimes go unnoticed by scholars. This paper presents a methodological survey about the factors that need to be taken into consideration in order to determine if a quotation is a valid source for the “constitutio textus”. Some criteria for the validity of quotations are discussed, starting from concrete textual problems, most of them taken from Greek literature. A new criterion, the so-called “taboo word” (a Freudian concept), is introduced by the author in the methodological discussion and highlighted as a novel possibility of explaining memory misquotations or scribal mistakes.peerReviewe

La lengua de Caritón de Afrodisias: características morfológicas

The present contribution is the fi rst to study the morphological characteristics of Chariton of Aphrodisias’s language as a whole. After a thorough analysis of each relevant feature, it can be concluded that Chariton does not use an atticist language, because the features of the Hellenistic koine are predominant: while some of them co-exist with the corresponding attic traits, others are exclusive for the koine. However, some exclusive attic features can be found as well, although not on a systematic basis. This allows us to draw a second conclusion: Chariton’s prose shows classicist characteristics, but it cannot be considered atticist prose yet.Este trabajo es el primero que estudia de forma global las características morfológicas de la lengua de Caritón. Tras un análisis pormenorizado de cada uno de los rasgos pertinentes, se concluye que Caritón no usa una lengua aticista, ya que son predominantes los rasgos propios de la koiné helenística, unos coexistiendo con los correspondientes rasgos áticos, pero otros con carácter exclusivo. Sin embargo, existen también algunos rasgos exclusivos del ático, si bien este hecho no se da de manera sistemática. Ello lleva a una segunda conclusión, consistente en que la prosa de Caritón muestra características clasicistas, sin que pueda ser considerada aún prosa aticista
