The pharmacokinetics of some β-blockers are altered by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The objective of this study was to compare the effect of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery employing CPB on the pharmacokinetics of propranolol and atenolol. We studied patients receiving oral propranolol with doses ranging from 80 to 240 mg (N = 11) or atenolol with doses ranging from 25 to 100 mg (N = 8) in the pre- and postoperative period of CABG with moderately hypothermic CPB (32°C). On the day before and on the first day after surgery, blood samples were collected before β-blocker administration and every 2 h thereafter. Plasma levels were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography and data were treated by pharmacokinetics-modelling. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA or the Friedman test, as appropriate, and P < 0.05 was considered to be significant. A prolongation of propranolol biological half-life from 5.41 ± 0.75 to 11.46 ± 1.66 h (P = 0.0028) and an increase in propranolol volume of distribution from 8.70 ± 2.83 to 19.33 ± 6.52 L/kg (P = 0.0032) were observed after CABG with CPB. No significant changes were observed in either atenolol biological half-life (from 11.20 ± 1.60 to 11.44 ± 2.89 h) or atenolol volume of distribution (from 2.90 ± 0.36 to 3.83 ± 0.72 L/kg). Total clearance was not changed by surgery. These CPB-induced alterations in propranolol pharmacokinetics may promote unexpected long-lasting effects in the postoperative period while the effects of atenolol were not modified by CPB surgery.FAPES

Consistency analysis of a nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating planar model

In this work analyze the physical consistency of a nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating planar model via the analysis of the pole structure of its Feynman propagators. The nonbirefringent planar model, obtained from the dimensional reduction of the CPT-even gauge sector of the standard model extension, is composed of a gauge and a scalar fields, being affected by Lorentz-violating (LIV) coefficients encoded in the symmetric tensor κμν\kappa_{\mu\nu}. The propagator of the gauge field is explicitly evaluated and expressed in terms of linear independent symmetric tensors, presenting only one physical mode. The same holds for the scalar propagator. A consistency analysis is performed based on the poles of the propagators. The isotropic parity-even sector is stable, causal and unitary mode for 0κ00<10\leq\kappa_{00}<1. On the other hand, the anisotropic sector is stable and unitary but in general noncausal. Finally, it is shown that this planar model interacting with a λφ4\lambda|\varphi|^{4}-Higgs field supports compactlike vortex configurations.Comment: 11 pages, revtex style, final revised versio

Detecting Determinacy in Prolog Programs: 22nd International Conference, ICLP 2006, Seattle, WA, USA, August 17-20, 2006. Proceedings

In program development it is useful to know that a call to a Prolog program will not inadvertently leave a choice-point on the stack. Determinacy inference has been proposed for solving this problem yet the analysis was found to be wanting in that it could not infer determinacy conditions for programs that contained cuts or applied certain tests to select a clause. This paper shows how to remedy these serious deficiencies. It also addresses the problem of identifying those predicates which can be rewritten in a more deterministic fashion. To this end, a radically new form of determinacy inference is introduced, which is founded on ideas in ccp, that is capable of reasoning about the way bindings imposed by a rightmost goal can make a leftmost goal deterministic

Reduction of blood nitric oxide levels is associated with clinical improvement of the chronic pelvic pain related to endometriosis

The objective of this prospective study was to determine the plasma levels of nitric oxide (NO) in women with chronic pelvic pain secondary to endometriosis (n=24) and abdominal myofascial pain syndrome (n=16). NO levels were measured in plasma collected before and 1 month after treatment. Pretreatment NO levels (μM) were lower in healthy volunteers (47.0±12.7) than in women with myofascial pain (64.2±5.0, P=0.01) or endometriosis (99.5±12.9, P<0.0001). After treatment, plasma NO levels were reduced only in the endometriosis group (99.5±12.9 vs 61.6±5.9, P=0.002). A correlation between reduction of pain intensity and reduction of NO level was observed in the endometriosis group [correlation = 0.67 (95%CI = 0.35 to 0.85), P<0.0001]. Reduction of NO levels was associated with an increase of pain threshold in this group [correlation = -0.53 (-0.78 to -0.14), P<0.0001]. NO levels appeared elevated in women with chronic pelvic pain diagnosed as secondary to endometriosis, and were directly associated with reduction in pain intensity and increase in pain threshold after treatment. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of NO in the pathophysiology of pain in women with endometriosis and its eventual association with central sensitization.484363369CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQSem informaçã

Nonlinear spinor field in Bianchi type-I Universe filled with viscous fluid: numerical solutions

We consider a system of nonlinear spinor and a Bianchi type I gravitational fields in presence of viscous fluid. The nonlinear term in the spinor field Lagrangian is chosen to be λF\lambda F, with λ\lambda being a self-coupling constant and FF being a function of the invariants II an JJ constructed from bilinear spinor forms SS and PP. Self-consistent solutions to the spinor and BI gravitational field equations are obtained in terms of τ\tau, where τ\tau is the volume scale of BI universe. System of equations for τ\tau and \ve, where \ve is the energy of the viscous fluid, is deduced. This system is solved numerically for some special cases.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

Dynamics of Brane-World Cosmological Models

We show that generically the initial singularity is isotropic in spatially homogeneous cosmological models in the brane-world scenario. We then argue that it is plausible that the initial singularity is isotropic in typical brane world cosmological models. Therefore, brane cosmology naturally gives rise to a set of initial data that provide the conditions for inflation to subsequently take place, thereby solving the initial conditions problem and leading to a self--consistent and viable cosmology.Comment: Final version. Are braneworlds born isotropic?

Get PDF
It has recently been suggested that an isotropic singularity may be a generic feature of brane cosmologies, even in the inhomogeneous case. Using the covariant and gauge-invariant approach we present a detailed analysis of linear perturbations of the isotropic model Fb{\cal F}_b which is a past attractor in the phase space of homogeneous Bianchi models on the brane. We find that for matter with an equation of state parameter γ>1\gamma > 1, the dimensionless variables representing generic anisotropic and inhomogeneous perturbations decay as t0t\to 0, showing that the model Fb{\cal F}_b is asymptotically stable in the past. We conclude that brane universes are born with isotropy naturally built-in, contrary to standard cosmology. The observed large-scale homogeneity and isotropy of the universe can therefore be explained as a consequence of the initial conditions if the brane-world paradigm represents a description of the very early universe.Comment: Changed to match published versio

Bose-Einstein condensate collapse: a comparison between theory and experiment

We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically for the collapse induced by a switch from positive to negative scattering lengths. We compare our results with experiments performed at JILA with Bose-Einstein condensates of Rb-85, in which the scattering length was controlled using a Feshbach resonance. Building on previous theoretical work we identify quantitative differences between the predictions of mean-field theory and the results of the experiments. Besides the previously reported difference between the predicted and observed critical atom number for collapse, we also find that the predicted collapse times systematically exceed those observed experimentally. Quantum field effects, such as fragmentation, that might account for these discrepancies are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Considering the privacy concerns on users’ data in social networks, the role of images on social networks and the images as data sources, this paper aims to identify how data collection from images is treated in Facebook and Instagram. For this, we identify the main methods for data collection from images, the mentions to data collection from images in Facebook and Instagram policies, and the options that are presented to users for setting up the data collection from images. We conclude that the policies analyzed are vague in several points regarding to data collection from images: they do not specify which data are collected and just list items with an illustrative purpose. These findings highlight the need for studies and actions to raise awareness of social networks users about their privacy in data collection.

Bounds on the mass of the b' quark, revisited

Recent results from the DELPHI collaboration led us to review the present bounds on the b' quark mass. We use all available experimental data for m_b' > 96 GeV to constrain the b' quark mass as a function of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements in a sequential four generations model. We find that there is still room for a b' with a mass larger than 96 GeV.Comment: 9 pages and 7 figures. REVTEX
