In general, Domite places her reflection on Freire’s search in locating the educational action in the student's culture, that is, considering and respecting the culture that each student brings inside themselves – goals that a teacher who see education as a practice of freedom should pursue. Paulo Freire published more than 30 literary works. The most famous one is the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, initially published in English in 1970, later released in Brazil only in 1974 and it is currently in its 50th edition. Exiled between 1964 and 1980, Paulo Freire lived in several countries where he also contributed to the dialogue and development of the local educational policies. Domite, Professor of Education of the University of São Paulo has been developing her studies and researches in Ethnomathematics, always concerned about understanding the potential of taking in account the culture of the students in educational processes. This interview emerges from one ramification of the thesis of Régis Forner (PUC-Campinas in São Paulo State), in which Régis sought to establish the relationship and influence of ideas and theorizations from Paulo Freire in Mathematics Educatio

Place determinants and social dimensions interact to produce mobility patterns. The article seeks to measure to what extent the physical and social conditions of the residency place modulate the intensity of mobility particularly in what concerns gender inequalities. To do so, we first present the theoretical framework, which guides our perspective on mobility inequalities and the geographical focus: Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA). Secondly, using logistic regression on representative data from a survey to LMA inhabitants we elaborate on the concept of environmental motility and its relationship to various types of inequality. Lastly, we systematize a view on accumulated inequalities examining how local environments may increase the mobilities gender gap.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

‘Unequal mobilities’ in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area: daily travel choices and private car use

Mobilities have been looked at in increasingly greater depth over the last few decades, posing a growing set of theoretical and methodological problems for urban studies. One of the approaches that are being taken in this field is to consider the relationship between social inequalities and the various different mobility conditions. The present article seeks to show the extent to which mobility behaviours of Lisbon Metropolitan Area residents vary in accordance with a range of inequality variables, such as gender, education, social class, and age, thus generating clearly marked social profiles. Special attention is paid to car use. Statistical analysis of a questionnaire applied to 1,500 residents shows that regular car use is still relatively circumscribed to one social group, to which it offers the advantage of less time spent on daily travel, notwithstanding the increased costs. On the other hand, populations who regularly use public transport are at a disadvantage, spending more of their day travelling from one place to another.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This paper seeks to characterise the publications of the technological innovation management forum. With this aim, it analyses four aspects: orientation, style, originality and readability. The information used for this study was obtained from the Emerald Management Reviews database (Emerald Group Publishing). The time period considered ran from 1996 to 2003. From the analysis, the work concludes an increasingly clear research orientation over the period. Research-Technology Management is the journal most oriented to practice. The work also finds a clear predominance of the academic style, with some room provided for the professional-journalistic style, and a certain loss of originality and readability in the publications over the period. Finally, the journals declare a more varied readership than they actually seem to have. This paper seeks to characterise the publications of the technological innovation management forum. An unprecedented two-step sequence was designed by combining batch and continuous flow (CF) protocols for the upgrading of two aminodiol regioisomers derived from glycerol, i.e., 3-amino-1,2-propanediol and 2-amino-1,3-propanediol (serinol). Under batch conditions, at 80-90 \ub0C, both substrates were quantitatively converted into the corresponding amides through a catalystfree N-acetylation reaction mediated by an innocuous enol ester as isopropenyl acetate (iPAc). Thereafter, at 30-100 \ub0C and 1-10 atm, the amide derivatives underwent a selective CF-acetalisation in the presence of acetone and a solid acid catalyst, to afford the double-functionalized (amideacetal) products

The effect of a concept mapping Intervention on shared cognition and adaptive team performance over time

    Get PDF
Research has demonstrated the value of team adaptation for organizational teams. However, empirical work on interventions that teams can take to increase adaptive team performance is scarce. In response, this study proposes a concept mapping intervention as a way to increase teams’ ability to adapt following a task change. Particularly, this study examines the effect of a concept mapping intervention on team transition adaptation (the drop in performance after a change) and reacquisition adaptation (the slope of performance after the change) via its effect on task mental models and transactive memory systems. We conducted a longitudinal experimental study of 44 three-person teams working on an emergency management simulation. Findings suggest that the concept mapping intervention promotes reacquisition adaptation, task mental models, and transactive memory systems. Results also suggest that task mental models mediate the effect of the concept mapping intervention on reacquisition adaptation. A post hoc analysis suggests that the concept mapping intervention is only effective if it leads to high task mental model accuracy. Our study presents concept mapping as a practical intervention to promote shared cognition and reacquisition adaptation.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Primary and secondary scintillation measurements in a xenon Gas Proportional Scintillation Counter

NEXT is a new experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a 100 kg radio-pure high-pressure gaseous xenon TPC. The detector requires excellent energy resolution, which can be achieved in a Xe TPC with electroluminescence readout. Hamamatsu R8520-06SEL photomultipliers are good candidates for the scintillation readout. The performance of this photomultiplier, used as VUV photosensor in a gas proportional scintillation counter, was investigated. Initial results for the detection of primary and secondary scintillation produced as a result of the interaction of 5.9 keV X-rays in gaseous xenon, at room temperature and at pressures up to 3 bar, are presented. An energy resolution of 8.0% was obtained for secondary scintillation produced by 5.9 keV X-rays. No significant variation of the primary scintillation was observed for different pressures (1, 2 and 3 bar) and for electric fields up to 0.8 V cm-1 torr-1 in the drift region, demonstrating negligible recombination luminescence. A primary scintillation yield of 81 \pm 7 photons was obtained for 5.9 keV X-rays, corresponding to a mean energy of 72 \pm 6 eV to produce a primary scintillation photon in xenon.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in JINS

Storm surge assessment methodology based on numerical modelling

    Get PDF
Coastal zones face severe weaknesses and high-risk situations due to coastal threats like erosion and storms and due to an increasing intensive occupation. Tropical storms events can contribute to the occurrence of these situations, by causing storm surges with high water levels and, consequently, episodes of waves overtopping and coastal flooding. This work aims to describe a methodology to estimate the storm surge occurrences in the Portuguese coastal zone, recurring to historical tropical storms data that occurred in the vicinity of Portugal and to numerical modeling of its characteristics. Delft3D software together with DelfDashboard tools were applied for the numerical modelling. An automatic generation procedure of storms was implemented based on the few available historical storms data characteristics. Obtained results allows to characterize storm surges along the Portuguese coast, identifying the most vulnerable areas and, consequently contributing for its proper planning and management.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
