    A Novel Ultrasound-based Measure of the Liver among Diabetes Mellitus Type II Patients

    Diabetes mellitus type II (DM II) or adult onset diabetes is due to the inefficient use of insulin, which affects various organs and tissues. Patients with DM II are at risk of suffering non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that can later develop into more life threating forms such as hepatomegaly, cirrhosis or liver cancer. Following the logic of the non-inferiority trial test, we aim to establish a more accurate anatomical measure of the right liver lobe (RLL) to facilitate close monitoring of liver size with ultrasound (US). We hypothesize that US is not unacceptably worse than computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately and reliably measure the size of the RLL when the measure is taken in the midaxillary line and craniocaudal plane (MAL-CC). Therefore, the objective of this study is to conduct a non-inferiority trial to test our novel MAL-CC measure. To meet this aim, US measure of the RLL was taken from DM II (n=7) and non-DM II (n=5) patients, whom were recruited from 2 endocrinology clinics at SoM-UPR. Preliminary data shows that MAL-CC measure of the RLL from non-DM II patients is 13.99 + 2.53 cm whereas the same measurement among DM II patients is 15.25 + 3.25 cm (Mann-Whitney U test, p= 0.42). It is concluded that there is a non-significant trend for large RLL sizes among DM II patients. Future work aims to increase sample size and to validate our novel measurement with MRI

    Parallel Quantum Computation Approach for Quantum Deep Learning and Classical-Quantum Models

    The paradigm of Quantum computing and artificial intelligence has been growing steadily in recent years and given the potential of this technology by recognizing the computer as a physical system that can take advantage of quantum mechanics for solving problems faster, more efficiently, and accurately. We suggest experimentation of this potential through an architecture of different quantum models computed in parallel. In this work, we present encouraging results of how it is possible to use Quantum Processing Units analogically to Graphics Processing Units to accelerate algorithms and improve the performance of machine learning models through three experiments. The first experiment was a reproduction of a parity function, allowing us to see how the convergence of a given Quantum model is influenced significantly by computing it in parallel. For the second and third experiments, we implemented an image classification problem by training quantum neural networks and using pre-trained models to compare their performances with the same experiments carried out with parallel quantum computations. We obtained very similar results in the accuracies, which were close to 100% and significantly improved the execution time, approximately 15 times faster in the best-case scenario. We also propose an alternative as a proof of concept to address emotion recognition problems using optimization algorithms and how execution times can be positively affected by parallel quantum computation. To do this, we use tools such as the cross-platform software library PennyLane and Amazon Web Services to access high-end simulators with Amazon Braket and IBM quantum experience

    Quantum machine learning for intrusion detection of distributed denial of service attacks: a comparative overview

    In recent years, we have seen an increase in computer attacks through our communication networks worldwide, whether due to cybersecurity systems' vulnerability or their absence. This paper presents three quantum models to detect distributed denial of service attacks. We compare Quantum Support Vector Machines, hybrid Quantum- Classical Neural Networks, and a two-circuit ensemble model running parallel on two quantum processing units. Our work demonstrates quantum models' e ectiveness in supporting current and future cybersecurity systems by obtaining performances close to 100%, being 96% the worst-case scenario. It compares our models' performance in terms of accuracy and consumption of computational resources

    Phonetic Detection for Hate Speech Spreaders on Twitter

    Nowadays, hate messages have become the object of study on social media. Efficient and effective detection of hate profiles requires various scientific disciplines, such as computational linguistics and sociology. Here, we illustrate how we used lexical and phonetic features to determine if the author spreads hate speech. This article presents a novel strategy for the characterization of the Twitter profile based on the generation of lexical and phonetic user features that serve as input to a set of classifiers. The results are part of our participation in the PAN 2021 in the CLEF in the task of Profiling Hate Speech Spreaders on Twitter

    Angiotensin-(1-7) increases osmotic water permeability in isolated toad skin

    Angiotensin-(1-7) (Ang-(1-7)) increased osmotic water permeability in the isolated toad skin, a tissue with functional properties similar to those of the distal mammalian nephron. Concentrations of 0.1 to 10 μM were effective, with a peak at 20 min. This effect was similar in magnitude to that of frog skin angiotensin II (Ang II) and oxytocin but lower than that of human Ang II and arginine-vasotocin. The AT2 angiotensin receptor antagonist PD 123319 (1.0 μM) fully inhibited the response to 0.1 μM Ang-(1-7) but had no effect on the response to Ang II at the same concentration. The specific receptor antagonist of Ang-(1-7), A-779, was ineffective in blocking the response to Ang-(1-7) and to frog skin Ang II. The AT1 receptor subtype antagonist losartan, which blocked the response to frog skin Ang II, was ineffective in blocking the response to Ang-(1-7).     Abrogation and appropriation in selected pre-war Philippine short stories in English

    Postcolonial literature is characterized by abrogation and appropriation, in which writers take the language of the former imperial power and re-place it in a discourse fully adapted to the colonized place. Studies on literary traditions of former colonies have shown how native writers advance local collective sentiments. In this paper, the short stories of Manuel Arguilla, a literary icon of Philippine short stories in English, were analyzed using Ashcroft et al.’s (1989) textual strategies in postcolonial writing to unearth the strategies used by the writer in valorizing the use of an abrogated and appropriated “english” in expressing native sentiments. Qualitative content analysis of Arguilla’s four short stories suggests that the use of untranslated words and glossing were the most abundant strategies used to abrogate and appropriate the colonizer’s language. Further, thematic analysis of the stories point to four themes relating to how the author valorized the use of an english in expressing native sentiments: expression of an authentic self, expression of an authentic place, subtle form of subversion and advancement of Filipino identities and ideologies. These findings suggest that, like in other postcolonial literary traditions, postcolonial Philippine short stories, as seen from the writing of Manuel Arguilla, are typical of what Ashcroft et al. (1989) advance as a paradigmatic tension between the colonizer and the colonized, but are unique in that they serve as medium through which to voice out local Filipino sentiments and aspirations. Some implications for postcolonial literature are discussed

    Describimos un nuevo sapito niñera del género Allobates (Dendrobatidae) proveniente de Río Negro, Municipio Córdoba, Estado Táchira, oeste de Venezuela. Esta nueva especie es habitante terrestre de bosque tropical primario y secundario en tierras bajas y medias entre los 400 y 1000 msnm. La nueva especie es similar a especies del grupo de Allobates marchesianus y su distribución se restringe a las faldas occidentales de los Andes Venezolanos. Difiere de sus congéneres por su patrón dorsal manchado irregularmente, con línea oblicua lateral difusa, línea ventro-lateral presente, y vientre de color amarillo en los machos.We describe a new nurse frog in the genus Allobates (Dendrobatidae) from Río Negro, Municipio Córdoba, Estado Táchira, in western Venezuela. This species is a leaflitter inhabitant of primary and secondary lowland rainforest at altitudes from 400 to 1000 m. The new species is similar to the species in the Allobates marchesianus group and is restricted to the slopes of the western Venezuelan Andes. It differs from its congeners by having an irregularly spotted dorsal pattern, diffuse oblique lateral stripe, ventrolateral stripe and yellowish belly on males.Descrevemos aqui uma nova espécie de anuro do gênero Allobates (Dendrobatidae) proveniente de Río Negro, Município de Córdoba, Estado de Táchira, oeste da Venezuela. Trata-se de um anfíbio terrestre que habita a floresta tropical primária e secundária de baixas e médias altitudes, entre 400 e 1000 m. A nova espécie é similar àquelas do grupo de Allobates marchesianus, e sua distribuição geográfica se restringe às encostas ocidentais dos Andes venezuelanos. Difere de seus congêneres por seu padrão dorsal com manchas irregulares, com linha lateral oblíqua difusa, linha ventro-lateral presente e ventre amarelo nos machos

    team UTB-NLP at finances 2023: financial targeted sentiment analysis using a phonestheme semantic approach

    Sentiment analysis in the financial domain is a challenging task that plays a crucial role in understanding public opinion, monitoring market trends, and assessing the impact of news on economic agents. In this shared task, we address targeted sentiment analysis in the financial domain, focusing on identifying the main economic target in news headlines and determining the sentiment polarity towards such targets. We propose a methodology that combines transformer-based models and phonestheme embeddings to extract meaningful features from the text, which are then used in a support vector machine (SVM) classifier for sentiment classification. Our approach shows promising results, outperforming the baseline with an F1-score of 0.529229 in Task 1. This research contributes to financial sentiment analysis by addressing the complexity of financial language and considering multiple economic agents' perspectives.Universidad Tecnológica de Bolíva

    Tesis (Ingeniero en Computación e Informática)En este documento se presenta la planificación, el diseño y el desarrollo del proyecto de titulación "Apoyo a la Cotización y Reserva de Productos", el cual es una herramienta que permite llevar un registro de las cotizaciones y reservas hechas por clientes registrados en la aplicación web. REHC, hoy en día, su manera de comercializar es a través de vía telefónica lo cual deja una gran parte del día libre sin poder generar reservas o que sus clientes coticen sus productos. A raíz de esto nuestra solución es una aplicación web que apoye a la línea telefónica y esté disponible las 24 horas para que los clientes no posean un tope de horario. En este documento se detalla cómo se logro desarrollar la aplicación en todos los sentidos, comenzando por el análisis, a través del cual se lograron visualizar los requerimientos donde a .raíz de ellos se diseño la solución. El diseño incluye modelos tales como, modelo de datos, modelo de clases, diagramas de casos de uso, diagrama del proceso de negocio entre otros, a través de los cuales se logra estructurar el cómo será desarrollada la aplicación. Concluyendo el documento se muestra el resultado final con la descripción de todos los módulos desarrollados con sus respectivas interpretaciones gráficas
