The representation of the gene content of an organism is impacted by several factors, ranging from sampling to sequencing and then the genome assembly task. The genome assembly process can generate errors that are related to insufficient coverage in the data set, an inadequate assembly methodology, and finally, errors related to the limitation of the assembly software used. Thus, some genes remain unidentified both in complete and draft genomes, this incomplete gene knowledge impacts on several organisms, mainly of medical and industrial interest, such as Bifidobacterium breve, a Gram-positive bacterium, found in the gastrointestinal microbiota of mammals, including humans, and has beneficial probiotic activities. Therefore, the objective of this work is to identify the new gene products not represented in the genome of Bifidobacterium breve DS15-17 using the raw reads of this organism. The reads were produced from the sequencing with the Illumina MiSeq platform. PAN2HGENE software was used to identify new gene products. After the analysis, 44 new gene products were identified, 26 with described function and 18 hypothetical proteins. The hypothetical proteins identified were analyzed in the ProtoNet and Superfamily databases

To determine whether kidney disease and hemolysis are associated with bone mass density in a population of adult Brazilian patients with sickle cell disease. Bone involvement is a frequent clinical manifestation of sickle cell disease, and it has multiple causes; however, there are few consistent clinical associations between bone involvement and sickle cell disease. Patients over 20 years of age with sickle cell disease who were regularly followed at the Hematology and Hemotherapy Center of Campinas, Brazil, were sorted into three groups, including those with normal bone mass density, those with osteopenia, and those with osteoporosis, according to the World Health Organization criteria. The clinical data of the patients were compared using statistical analyses. In total, 65 patients were included in this study: 12 (18.5%) with normal bone mass density, 37 (57%) with osteopenia and 16 (24.5%) with osteoporosis. Overall, 53 patients (81.5%) had bone mass densities below normal standards. Osteopenia and osteoporosis patients had increased lactate dehydrogenase levels and reticulocyte counts compared to patients with normal bone mass density (p<0.05). Osteoporosis patients also had decreased hemoglobin levels (p<0.05). Hemolysis was significantly increased in patients with osteoporosis compared with patients with osteopenia, as indicated by increased lactate dehydrogenase levels and reticulocyte counts as well as decreased hemoglobin levels. Osteoporosis patients were older, with lower glomerular filtration rates than patients with osteopenia. There was no significant difference between the groups with regard to gender, body mass index, serum creatinine levels, estimated creatinine clearance, or microalbuminuria. A high prevalence of reduced bone mass density that was associated with hemolysis was found in this population, as indicated by the high lactate dehydrogenase levels, increased reticulocyte counts and low hemoglobin levels.66801-

The occurrence of Nyssomyia intermedia s.lat. in the state of Paraná, Brazil, has been registered by several authors; however, studies have identified this taxon as belonging, in Paraná, to Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto). During captures with traps in a hen-house and forested areas, from November 2005 to October 2006, in Adrianópolis, Morretes and Pontal do Paraná, situated in the Atlantic forest domain, Paraná state, seven females of Nyssomyia intermedia s.str. (Lutz & Neiva) were collected together with other 14 sand floy species. Thus the occurrence of N. intermedia on the coast and in areas of Atlantic forest in Paraná is confirmed

Purpose: We analyzed the impact of sex, performance level and substantial speed reductions (SSR) on pacing in the VI Rio 24-h Marines Ultramarathon. This will provide insights into the importance of minimizing speed variations in relation to optimal pacing in endurance events. Methods: Runners (30 males and 21 females), classified as high- (HP) and low-performance (LP) ran the race while having their time recorded every 400 m. The pacing was analyzed as the first 10% (initial epoch), the following 80% (intermediate epoch) and the last 10% of the race (final epoch). The time percentage spent at speeds 8.0 km·h−1 (running speed) was calculated. Results: Runners showed a reverse J-shaped pacing (P < 0.001) regardless of sex and performance level, although male (P < 0.004) and HP runners (P < 0.001) have preserved a higher mean speed throughout the race. Male and HP runners spent more time at running speed (P < 0.001) and less time at SSR (P < 0.001) than female and LP runners. Total distance was inversely correlated with the number of SSR and speed CV in male (r = −0.47 and r = −0.64, respectively) and female (r = −0.61 and r = −0.47, respectively). Conclusion: Male, HP runners showed less SSR, conserving a higher mean speed with less variation throughout the race. Results suggest that conservative pacing strategies, with lower speeds in the beginning and higher speeds toward the end, may be the most adequate for different endurance running disciplines. Results also show different competition dynamics between men and women, which warrants further exploration in ultramarathons as well as other IAAF events

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging~300 deg2 of the celestial sphere in 12 optical bands using a dedicated 0.8 m robotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-american Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k×9.2k e2v detector with 10μm pixels, resulting in a field of view of 2 deg2 with a platescale of 0.55 arcsec pixel−1. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include twonon-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>30◦, 8000 deg2) and two areas of the Galactic Disc and Bulge (for an additional 1300 deg2). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5ugrizbroad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centred on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H+K, Hδ, Gband, Mg b triplet, Hα, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (δz/(1+z)=0.02 or better) for galaxies withr<19.7 AB mag andz<0.4, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than 1 (Gpc/h)3. The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the MilkyWay and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. We also present the first public data release of ~336 deg2 of the Stripe 82 area, in 12 bands, to a limiting magnitude ofr=21, available atdatalab.noao.edu/splus
