Demographic data suggest a rapid aging trend in the active workforce. The concept of aging at work comes from the urgent requirement to help the aging workforce of the contemporary industries to maintain productivity while achieving a work and private life balance. While there is plenty of research focusing on the aging population, current research activities on policies covering the concept of aging at work are limited and conceptually different. This paper aims to review publications on aging at work, which could lead to the creation of a framework that targets governmental decision-makers, the non-governmental sector, the private sector, and all of those who are responsible for the formulation of policies on aging at work. In August 2019 we searched for peer-reviewed articles in English that were indexed in PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and Springer and published between 2008 and 2019. The keywords included the following phrases: “successful aging at work”, “active aging at work”, “healthy aging at work”, “productive aging at work”, and “older adults at work”. A total of 47,330 publications were found through database searching, and 25,187 publications were screened. Afterwards, 7756 screened publications were excluded from the further analysis, and a total of 17,431 article abstracts were evaluated for inclusion. Finally, further qualitative analysis included 1375 articles, of which about 24 are discussed in this article. The most prominent works suggest policies that encourage life-long learning, and a workforce that comprises both younger and older workers, as well as gradual retirement.V.T., E.Z., I.C. and P.L. acknowledge the support of Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, Ss.

Beta 1 integrin predicts survival in breast cancer: a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study

Abstract\ud \ud \ud \ud Background\ud \ud The main focus of several studies concerned with cancer progression and metastasis is to analyze the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to interact and quickly adapt with their environment. Integrins, a family of transmembrane glycoproteins, play a major role in invasive and metastatic processes. Integrins are involved in cell adhesion in both cell-extracellular matrix and cell-cell interactions, and particularly, β1 integrin is involved in proliferation and differentiation of cells in the development of epithelial tissues. This work aimed to investigate the putative role of β1 integrin expression on survival and metastasis in patients with breast invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). In addition, we compared the expression of β1 integrin in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud Through tissue microarray (TMA) slides containing 225 samples of IDC and 67 samples of DCIS, β1 integrin expression was related with several immunohistochemical markers and clinicopathologic features of prognostic significance.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud β1 integrin was overexpressed in 32.8% of IDC. In IDC, β1 integrin was related with HER-2 (p = 0.019) and VEGF (p = 0.011) expression and it had a significant relationship with metastasis and death (p = 0.001 and p = 0.05, respectively). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the overexpression of this protein is very significant (p = 0.002) in specific survival (number of months between diagnosis and death caused by the disease). There were no correlation between IDC and DCIS (p = 0.559) regarding β1 integrin expression.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusions\ud \ud Considering that the expression of β1 integrin in breast cancer remains controversial, specially its relation with survival of patients, our findings provide further evidence that β1 integrin can be a marker of poor prognosis in breast cancer.\ud \ud \ud \ud Virtual slides\ud \ud The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: \ud http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/6652215267393871We thank CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, Brazil) and FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil) for financial support, CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, Brazil) and FACEPE (Fundação de Amparo à Ciência e Tecnologia do Estado de Pernambuco, Brazil) for schollarships and financial support; and Deisy Mara da Silva for technical assistance. This research is in accordance with Declaration of Helsinki, and was aprooved by the local ethics comitee

This quantitative study aimed to construct Mokken scales related to the capacity for self-care of 48 elderly individuals. The survey used a version of the Appraisal of Self-Care Agency Scale validated for Portuguese. The questionnaire of 24 items permitted answers on a Likert scale with five alternatives. For analysis, non-parametric item response theory was used. Out of all the polytomic items, 19 formed two Mokken scales: that of Subjective Self-Care Capacity, with 11 items, and that of Objective Self-Care Capacity, with 8 items. It was possible to set up two scales in diminishing order of self-care ability, according to each person´s total score. It was verified that where objective actions and attitudes are concerned, the self-care capacity of the elderly is less than when one is considering subjective actions and attitudes.Estudo quantitativo objetivou construir escalas de Mokken relacionadas à capacidade de autocuidado de 48 idosos. Background: Clinical reports associate kidneys from female donors with worse prognostic in male recipients. Brain Death (BD) produces immunological and hemodynamic disorders that affect organ viability. Following BD, female rats are associated with increased renal inflammation interrelated with female sex hormone reduction. Here, the aim was to investigate the effects of sex on BD-induced Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) using an Isolated Perfused rat Kidney (IPK) model. Methods: Wistar rats, females, and males (8 weeks old), were maintained for 4h after BD. A left nephrectomy was performed and the kidney was preserved in a cold saline solution (30 min). IPK was performed under normothermic temperature (37°C) for 90 min using WME as perfusion solution. AKI was assessed by morphological analyses, staining of complement system components and inflammatory cell markers, perfusion flow, and creatinine clearance. Results: BD-male kidneys had decreased perfusion flow on IPK, a phenomenon that was not observed in the kidneys of BD-females (p < 0.0001). BD-male kidneys presented greater proximal (p = 0.0311) and distal tubule (p = 0.0029) necrosis. However, BD-female kidneys presented higher expression of eNOS (p = 0.0060) and greater upregulation of inflammatory mediators, iNOS (p = 0.0051), and Caspase-3 (p = 0.0099). In addition, both sexes had increased complement system formation (C5b-9) (p=0.0005), glomerular edema (p = 0.0003), and nNOS (p = 0.0051). Conclusion: The present data revealed an important sex difference in renal perfusion in the IPK model, evidenced by a pronounced reduction in perfusate flow and low eNOS expression in the BD-male group. Nonetheless, the upregulation of genes related to the proinflammatory cascade suggests a progressive inflammatory process in BD-female kidneys
