    Compositional uniformity, domain patterning and the mechanism underlying nano-chessboard arrays

    We propose that systems exhibiting compositional patterning at the nanoscale, so far assumed to be due to some kind of ordered phase segregation, can be understood instead in terms of coherent, single phase ordering of minority motifs, caused by some constrained drive for uniformity. The essential features of this type of arrangements can be reproduced using a superspace construction typical of uniformity-driven orderings, which only requires the knowledge of the modulation vectors observed in the diffraction patterns. The idea is discussed in terms of a simple two dimensional lattice-gas model that simulates a binary system in which the dilution of the minority component is favored. This simple model already exhibits a hierarchy of arrangements similar to the experimentally observed nano-chessboard and nano-diamond patterns, which are described as occupational modulated structures with two independent modulation wave vectors and simple step-like occupation modulation functions.Comment: Preprint. 11 pages, 11 figure

    Occurrence of tet(O/M/O) mosaic gene in tetracycline-resistant Campylobacter

    Campylobacter is one of the most important microorganisms responsible for foodborne diseases in the EU. In this study, we investigated resistance to tetracycline in 139 Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli samples isolated from human clinical cases. From these, 110 were resistant to tetracycline, with MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) varying in a range of 1 to >512 ug/mL, and 109 (78.4%) carried tet(O), a gene that confers resistance to tetracycline through the expression of a protein that confers protection to the ribosome. Amongst the tetracycline-resistant isolates, one C. jejuni (HCC30) was the only tet(O)-negative sample, presenting an MIC of 256 ug/mL. Instead, the mosaic gene tet(O/M/O) was found in HCC30 and, as far as we know, this is the first description of this chimeric gene originating from homologous recombination between tet(O) and tet(M). The previously described mosaic gene tet(O/32/O), also found in Campylobacter, presents a chimeric structure very similar to that of tet(O/M/O), affecting domains II and III of encoded proteins distantly related to the elongation factor G (EF-G). The tet(O/M/O) mosaic gene has been found in nucleotide databases in several genomes of Campylobacter isolated from different origins, indicating its frequent acquisition, even though it can be undetected through screening by PCR with specific tet(O) primers.     La metodología empresarial que se presenta en este artículo refleja un análisis metodológico completo para la evaluación de la situación o punto de partida de una empresa, o en este caso una plataforma logística ferroviaria; y las actuaciones y estrategias que se deben seguir para lograr los objetivos propuestos. Se realiza mediante un panel de expertos previo para conocer la situación y delimitar los aspectos a tener en cuenta en el análisis DAFO. Posteriormente se ponderan numéricamente, enfrentado los aspectos del DAFO para obtener un resultado por enfrentamientos y cuadrantes (Panel Delphi). Con ello, y un análisis empresarial CAME se delimitan las estrategias a seguir de los dos cuadrantes significativos (mayor y menor en puntuación). Esta metodología ha sido utilizada satisfactoriamente en el caso de la plataforma logística ferroviaria de Albacete

    Aldol Reactions between L-Erythrulose Derivatives and Chiral α-Amino and α -Fluoro Aldehydes: Competition between Felkin–Anh and Cornforth Transition States

    Both matched and mismatched diastereoselection have been observed in aldol reactions of a boron enolate of a protected l-erythrulose derivative with several chiral α-fluoro and α-Amino aldehydes. Strict adherence to the Felkin–Anh model for the respective transition structures does not account satisfactorily for all the observed results, as previously observed in the case of α-oxygenatedaldehydes. In some cases, only the Cornforth model provides a good explanation. The factors that influence this dichotomy are discussed and a general mechanistic model is proposed for aldol reactions with a-heteroatom-substituted aldehydes. Additional support for the model was obtained from density functional calculation

    Effect of jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) skin extract on the microbial activity in chilled mackerel (Scomber scombrus)

    6 páginas, 4 tablas, 2 figurasDuring the industrial processing of jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas), large amounts of by-products containing biological active compounds are generated. In this study, aqueous solutions including acetic acid-ethanol extracts of jumbo squid skin (JSS) were tested at three different concentrations as icing media. The effects of the JSS extracts on the quality evolution of chilled mackerel (Scomber scombrus) were monitored. A significant inhibition (p < 0.05) of microbial activity was determined in the fish batch corresponding to the icing condition including the highest JSS concentration. Additionally, fish specimens corresponding to batches including any of the JSS concentrations tested showed lower (p < 0.05) proteolytic counts and pH values than control mackerel. Sensory analysis revealed a marked shelf life extension in chilled mackerel stored in ice including the highest JSS concentration; specimens from such batch were found to be still acceptable after 13 days of storage, while all other mackerel batches were rejectable.     Anti aldol reactions of an L-erythrulose derivative with several α-chiral aldehydes mediated by dicyclohexylboron chloride are examined. Good yields and stereoselectivities are observed. The results are best explained when the reactions are assumed to occur via boat-like transition states with minimization of 1,3-allylic strain and avoidance of syn pentane interactions

    Synthesis of combretastatin A-4 O-alkyl derivatives and evaluation of their cytotoxic, antiangiogenic and antitelomerase activity

    We here report the synthesis and biological evaluation of several combretastatin A-4 derivatives alkylated at the phenol hydroxyl group. Some of these derivatives contain an (E)-arylalkene fragment reminiscent of that present in some natural stilbenes like resveratrol. The cytotoxicities towards one human healthy kidney embryonic and two tumoral cell lines were determined. In addition, the ability of these compounds to inhibit the production of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was measured. Finally, the expression of genes controlling the production of telomerase was measured. Some of the compounds were found to have an activity comparable or higher than that of combretastatin A-4 in at least one of the aforementioned biological properties. The compounds with the (E)-arylalkene fragment were in general terms more active than the simple O-alkyl derivatives. However, no clear structure/activity correlations were perceived when comparing the observed compound activities across the three biological properties. This points out the existence of marked differences between the mechanisms responsible for their cytotoxicity

    Thermodynamics of the classical spin-ice model with nearest neighbour interactions using the Wang-Landau algorithm

    In this article we study the classical nearest-neighbour spin-ice model (nnSI) by means of Monte Carlo simulations, using the Wang-Landau algorithm. The nnSI describes several of the salient features of the spin-ice materials. Despite its simplicity it exhibits a remarkably rich behaviour. The model has been studied using a variety of techniques, thus it serves as an ideal benchmark to test the capabilities of the Wang Landau algorithm in magnetically frustrated systems. We study in detail the residual entropy of the nnSI and, by introducing an applied magnetic field in two different crystallographic directions ([111] and [100]), we explore the physics of the kagome-ice phase, the transition to full polarisation, and the three dimensional Kasteleyn transition. In the latter case, we discuss how additional constraints can be added to the Hamiltonian, by taking into account a selective choice of states in the partition function and, then, show how this choice leads to the realization of the ideal Kasteleyn transition in the system.Instituto de Física de Líquidos y Sistemas BiológicosFacultad de Ciencias Exacta
