Between Conformity and Resistance: Essays on Politics, Culture, and the State by Marilena Chauí (Review)

Selections of the work authored by the renowned Brazilian philosopher Marilena Chauí are the material found in this volume. The book is part of a Palgrave Macmillan series that proposes to divulge the work of scholars from different parts of the word, assembled by interest, relevance, and the degree to which they are representative of the overall academic production of the scholars in question. Marilena Chauí is one of Brazil\u27s most highly regarded Brazilian thinkers of modern times and the selection presented in this volume is both historically relevant and representative of the author\u27s work. Under the theme Between Conformity and Resistance: Essays on Politics, Culture and the State, the organizers combined a number of Chauí\u27s texts, not organized chronologically, but by how they relate to the overarching theme. The volume is also timely—given Brazil\u27s prominence in the continent—and a good title not only for those interested in critical theory and political philosophy, but also for Brazilianists, or those more generally interested in Brazil\u27s development over the past decades

Machado de Assis: Multiracial Identity and the Brazilian Novelist by G. Reginald Daniel (Review)

In Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity, the sociologist Erving Goffman (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1963) discusses the relationship between individuals who possess a social stigma and the normals (8). Reginald Daniel\u27s new book, Machado de Assis: Multiracial Identity and the Brazilian Novelist, discusses the stigmatized identity of the most celebrated Brazilian novelist as perceived in his literary work. Machado\u27s biography is traced, his work commented on, and we are offered a picture of the Brazilian mulatto writer as a way to understand the inclusion, or lack thereof, of race relations and black identification in his writings

O objetivo desse texto é analisar a visão que o teórico Egídio Romano (1243/47-1316) constrói do feminino em seu tratado pedagógico De Regimine Principum (1277-81) para a instrução de Felipe IV da França (1268- 1314). Embora seja um speculum que visa a educação régia, Egídio dedica a Primeira Parte do Segundo Livro para a formulação de um modelo ideal de mulher. Autor de influência aristotélico-tomista, considera o homem, dotado de sabedoria, senhor natural da mulher. Primeiro registro de Sphaerobolus stellatus Tode (Basidiomycota, Geastraceae) na Amazônia, Brasil

Sphaerobolus stellatus Tode is a fascinating gasteroid fungus that is distinguished from other fungi by the diminutive morphology of the starry basidiome when mature and its peculiar strategy of spore’s dispersion. This taxon ejects the gleba for a considerable distance as if it was cannon, and therefore is popularly known as artillery fungus. Although the species is cosmopolitan, records are seldom in regions such as South America, and many of them require greater attention due to the absence of important morphological characters. In Brazil, the South American country with most records, the distribution was restricted to a few sites, none of them in the Amazon. This study describes the occurrence of S. stellatus from the Amazon, contributing to the understanding of its geographical distribution and making the material available for future diversity studies.Sphaerobolus stellatus Tode é um fungo gasteroide fascinante que se distingue dos outros fungos pela morfologia diminuta do basidioma estrelado quando maturo e sua peculiar estratégia de dispersar esporos. Esse táxon ejeta a gleba por uma distância considerável assim como um canhão, e por isso são popularmente conhecidos como fungo de artilharia. Embora a espécie seja cosmopolita, regiões como a América do Sul apresentam raros registros, muitos dos quais, devido à ausência de caracteres morfológicos importantes, necessitam de maior atenção.  No Brasil, país com a maioria das amostras, a distribuição estava restrita a poucas localidades, nenhuma delas na Amazônia. O presente estudo descreve a ocorrência de S. stellatus para a Amazônia, contribuindo com a compreensão de sua distribuição geográfica e disponibilizando o material para futuros estudos de diversidade

Green metascheduler architecture to provide QoS in cloud computing

The aim of this paper is to propose and evaluate GreenMACC (Green Metascheduler Ar-\ud chitecture to Provide QoS in Cloud Computing), an extension of the MACC architecture\ud (Metascheduler Architecture to provide QoS in Cloud Computing) which uses greenIT\ud techniques to provide Quality of Service. The paper provides an evaluation of the perfor-\ud mance of the policies in the four stages of scheduling focused on energy consumption and\ud average response time. The results presented con rm the consistency of the proposal as\ud it controls energy consumption and the quality of services requested by di erent users of\ud a large-scale private cloud

Alkane-grown Beauveria bassiana produce mycelial pellets displaying peroxisome proliferation, oxidative stress, and cell surface alterations

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana is able to grow on insect cuticle18 hydrocarbons as the sole carbon source, inducing several enzymes involved in alkane19 assimilation and concomitantly increasing virulence against insect hosts. In this study, we20 describe some physiological and molecular processes implicated in growth, nutritional21 stress response, and cellular alterations found in alkane-grown fungi. The fungal cytology22 was investigated using light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) while the surface23 topography was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fungal hydrophobicity24 was also measured on the cell surface. Additionally, the expression pattern of several genes25 associated with oxidative stress, peroxisome biogenesis, and hydrophobicity were analysed26 by qPCR. We found a novel type of growth in alkane-cultured B. bassiana similar to27 mycelial pellets described in other alkane-free fungi, which were able to germinate and28 produce viable conidia in media without a carbon source and to be pathogenic against29 larvae of the beetles Tenebrio molitor and Tribolium castaneum. Optical microscopy and30 TEM showed that pellets were formed by hyphae cumulates with high peroxidase activity,31 exhibiting peroxisome proliferation and an apparent surface thickening. Alkane-grown32 conidia appeared to be more hydrophobic and cell surfaces displayed different topography33 than glucose-grown cells, as it was observed by AFM. We also found a significant34 induction in several genes encoding for peroxins, catalases, superoxide dismutases, and35 hydrophobins. These results show that both morphological and metabolic changes are36 triggered in mycelial pellets derived from alkane-grown B. bassiana.Fil: Huarte Bonnet, Carla. As vantagens competitivas do cultivo do champignon no Paraná

Curso de Especialização em Projetos EmpresariaisInclui referênciasResumo: O artigo em questão se propõe a realizar um estudo sobre as vantagens competitivas do cultivo do cogumelo Agaricus bisphorus, chamado de "Champignon de Paris", no Estado do Paraná para o curso de Especialização em Projetos Empresariais da Universidade Federal do Paraná. Neste estudo, serão identificados alguns fatores locacionais que podem ser determinantes na obtenção do sucesso do negócio, como o clima da região Metropolitana de Curitiba, o qual é propício para o cultivo do champignon, a proximidade dos mercados fornecedor e consumidor, bem como as vantagens econômicas obtidas pela localização do empreendimento na zona rural. Através de pesquisas realizadas com os produtores locais, bem como com um fornecedor atuante da região, que inclusive atua como consultor para auxiliar à correta forma de manejo da produção visando maior retorno aos mesmos, verificamos que é necessário a junção de diversos fatores, bem como muito conhecimento sobre o negócio para a obtenção de uma margem de retorno satisfatória. Ainda assim, considerando as condições ideais verificadas na Região Metropolitana de Curitiba, o cultivo do cogumelo tem se tornado uma boa alternativa de renda para moradores de pequenas propriedades rurais

“TRISTE REALIDADE”: CONSTRUINDO SOLIDARIEDADE EM REAÇÃO À DISCRIMINAÇÃO RACIAL NO FACEBOOK

Este trabalho analisa excertos de uma discussão no Facebook desencadeada pelo posting de um vídeo no qual uma mulher dirige insultos raciais a uma outra. A análise da interação que segue o vídeo ilustra como 1) a linguística sócio-interacional e a análise do discurso suprem ferramentas úteis para se estudar a Comunicação mediada por computadores, e 2) ajuda a compreender o alinhamento dos participantes contra o racismo e a discriminação para construir solidariedade. Este estudo exemplifica  como recursos linguísticos e extralinguísticos, disponíveis por meio do Facebook permitem aos participantes expressas suas opiniões sobre o episódio, construindo posições e identidades para si e o outro
