Binge Drinking and Internalised Sexual Stigma among Italian Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Young Adults
BACKGROUND - Literature has studied the relation between youth alcohol consumption and sexual orientation, showing that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) young people are at increased risk to develop alcohol-related problems compared to heterosexuals. AIM - Our study aims to describe alcohol use patterns in relation to alcohol expectancies, internalised sexual stigma and sensation seeking and to highlight the specific risk factors that sexual minority subgroups face. DESIGN - A survey was administered in order to examine drinking habits, background information and levels of internalised sexual stigma and of sensation seeking in 468 LGB youths. According to the alcohol consumption, the sample was divided into three groups: social, binge and heavy drinkers. RESULTS - Data showed that bisexual youths were at most risk of heavy drinking compared to lesbian and gay participants. Moreover, LGB heavy drinkers reported higher levels of sensation seeking, earlier age of first alcohol consumption and more positive drinking expectancies compared to binge and social drinkers. Bisexual male heavy drinkers also showed more social confidence alcohol expectancies while bisexual female heavy drinkers showed more sensation seeking. CONCLUSION - Bisexual youths are at most risk of alcohol abuse. It is conceivable that these findings are related to the peculiar discrimination to which bisexual people are subject. Setting up of a theoretical-experimental approach for the measurement of the vibrational impact on cultural heritages due to vehicular traffic
During the last years, the constant increase of the request for transport by road and by rail, connected to the economic and social development process, has provoked the birth of the phenomenon of the vibrations induced by the means of transports, with the result of stimulating the resident population's curiosity and the technical personnel's interest. Into the historic centres of the towns, it is possible to trace a series of concomitant factors that tend further to increase this process: the road superstructure mostly used in the historical centres are often stony, and their usage is due mainly to aesthetic reasons; the no-measurement or the lack of maintenance are often the causes of high levels of roughness; the buildings set into the historical centres have got a historical-art value of primary importance and some part of them (such as mosaics, pictures, etc.) are very sensitive to vibrations, being sticking to the outside walls; According to what said above, the noisy and vibrations provoked by the road traffic are becoming even more one of the main cause of the environmental damage

Development of a monoclonal anti-ADAMTS-5 antibody that specifically blocks the interaction with LRP1
The potent aggrecanase ADAMTS-5 is constitutively secreted by chondrocytes, but it is rapidly endocytosed in normal cartilage via the cell surface endocytic receptor LRP1. Therefore it is difficult to detect the total ADAMTS-5 activity produced. In this study, we isolated a monoclonal anti-ADAMTS-5 antibody 1B7 that blocks LRP1-mediated internalization without affecting the aggrecanolytic activity. Addition of 1B7 to cultured human chondrocytes revealed the full aggrecanolytic activity of ADAMTS-5 generated by the cells. 1B7 is a useful tool to estimate the ADAMTS-5 activity and to identify its potential roles in the tissues
Destino dei radionuclidi negli impianti di depurazione delle acque reflue urbane
Lo studio presentato in questo lavoro ha avuto come obiettivo il monitoraggio e l’analisi del destino
dei radionuclidi negli impianti di depurazione ed è stato condotto in collaborazione tra l’UniversitÃ
di Palermo e ARPA Sicilia. Esso ha previsto lo svolgimento di due fasi sperimentali. Nel corso
della prima sono stati monitorati gli impianti di depurazione a servizio dei Comuni di Palermo (in
località Acqua dei Corsari e Fondo Verde), Bagheria e Cefalù; nella seconda fase l’indagine è stata
limitata al solo impianto di Acqua dei Corsari, nel quale si erano riscontrati in precedenza i
maggiori spunti di interesse.
In entrambe le fasi sono stati prelevati campioni istantanei in diverse sezioni degli impianti oggetto
del monitoraggio: influente, vasca a fanghi attivi, ricircolo di fango, effluente del sedimentatore
secondario e fango disidratato. I campioni sono stati analizzati con l’obiettivo di determinare
l’attività dei principali radioisotopi di origine antropica, per via del loro uso medicale, o presenti
nell’ambiente. L’identificazione e la quantificazione dell’attività dei radioisotopi nei campioni
prelevati sono state condotte mediante tecniche di spettrometria gamma, utilizzando le
strumentazioni disponibili presso l’Università di Palermo e il Laboratorio di radioattività della
Struttura Territoriale di Palermo di ARPA Sicilia.
Le attività dei radionuclidi rilevate nei vari punti di campionamento sono state utilizzate per la
valutazione del rischio radiologico dei lavoratori e verificare il rispetto dei limiti di esposizione.
I risultati ottenuti hanno generalmente evidenziato che il radiosotopo maggiormente presente nei
campioni analizzati è risultato lo 131I, verosimilmente a causa del suo elevato tempo di
dimezzamento. Inoltre è stata riscontrata una maggiore affinità dei radionuclidi nei confronti della
componente solida presente nelle acque reflue, circostanza questa che comporta il loro progressivo
trasferimento nei fanghi di depurazione, con particolare riferimento, per lo 131I alla frazione
organica in essi presente. Tuttavia le attività di 131I rilevate nei fanghi depurazione sono risultate
inferiori ai valori limite imposti dalla normativa vigente (D.Lgs. 230/95, D.Lgs. 241/00), per il loro
smaltimento
Modulation of Morphology and Glycan Composition of Mucins in Farmed Guinea Fowl (Numida meleagris) Intestine by the Multi-Strain Probiotic Slab51®
Probiotics have become highly recognized as supplements for poultry.Since gut health can
be considered synonymous withanimal health, the effects of probiotic Slab51® on the morphology
and the glycan composition of guineafowlintestine were examined. The probiotics were added in
drinking water (2 x 1011 UFC/L) throughout the grow-out cycle.Birds were individually weighed
andslaughtered after four months. Samples from the duodenum, ileum and caecum were collected
and processed for morphological, morphometric, conventional and lectin glycohistochemical studies.
The results were analyzed for statistical significance by Student’s t test. Compared with control
samples, probiotic group revealed (1) significant increase in villus height (p < 0.001 in duodenum
and ileum; p < 0.05 in caecum), crypt depth (p < 0.001 in duodenum and caecum; p < 0.05 in ileum)
and goblet cells (GCs) per villus (p < 0.001) in all investigated tracts; (2) increase in galactosel,3Nacetylgalacyosamine(
Gall,3GalNAc)terminating O-glycans and l,2-fucosylated glycans secretory
GCs in the duodenum; (3) increase in 2,6-sialoglycans and high-mannose N-linked glycans secretory
GCs but reduction in GCs-secreting sulfoglycans in the ileum; (4) increase in Gall,3GalNAc
and high-mannose N-linked glycans secretory GCs and decrease in GCs-producing sulfomucins
in the caecum; (5) increase in the numbers of crypt cells containing sulfate and non-sulfated acidic
glycans. Overall, dietary Slab51® induces morphological and region-specific changes in glycoprotein
composition of guinea fowl intestine, promoting gut health
Assessment of chest high-field magnetic resonance imaging in children and young adults with noncystic fibrosis chronic lung disease: comparison to high-resolution computed tomography and correlation with pulmonary function.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a radiation-free alternative to high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for the assessment and follow-up of chest disorders. Thus far, no study has compared the efficacy of high-field MRI and HRCT in children and adults with noncystic fibrosis (CF) chronic lung disease. The aims of our study were: (1) to assess whether chest high-field MRI is as effective as chest HRCT in identifying pulmonary abnormalities; and (2) to investigate the relationships between the severity and extent of lung disease, and functional data in patients with non-CF chronic lung disease.
Forty-one subjects (median age, 13.8 years; range, 5.9-29.3 years; 30 children/11 adults) with primary ciliary dyskinesia (n = 14), primary immunodeficiency (n = 14), or recurrent pneumonia (n = 13) underwent pulmonary function tests, chest HRCT (120 kV, dose-modulated mAs) and high-field 3.0-T MRI (HASTE; transversal orientation; repetition time/echo time/flip angle/acquisition time, infinite/92 milliseconds/150 degrees/approximately 90 seconds). HRCT and MRI images were scored in consensus by 2 raters using a modified version of the Helbich scoring system. The maximal score was 25.
HRCT and high-field MRI total scores were 11 (range: 1-20) and 11 (range: 1-17), respectively. There was good agreement between the 2 techniques for all scores (r > 0.8). HRCT and MRI total scores, and extent of bronchiectasis scores were significantly related to pulmonary function tests (r = -0.4, P < 0.05). The MRI mucous plugging score was significantly related to pulmonary function tests (r = -0.4, P < 0.05).
Chest high-field 3.0-T MRI appears to be as effective as HRCT in assessing the extent and severity of lung abnormalities in non-CF chronic lung diseases, and might be a reliable radiation-free option to HRCT
Lung disease assessment in primary ciliary dyskinesia: a comparison between chest high-field magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution computed tomography findings
Abstract Background Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is associated with pulmonary involvement that requires periodical assessment. Chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) has become the method of choice to evaluate chronic lung disease, but entails exposure to ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a potential radiation-free technique in several chest disorders. Aim of our study is to evaluate whether high-field MRI is as effective as HRCT in identifying PCD pulmonary abnormalities. We also analyzed the relationships between the severity and extension of lung disease, and functional data. Methods Thirteen PCD patients (8 children/5 adults; median age, 15.2 yrs) underwent chest HRCT and high-field 3T MRI, spirometry, and deep throat or sputum culture. Images were scored using a modified version of the Helbich system. Results HRCT and MRI total scores were 12 (range, 6–20) and 12 (range, 5–17), respectively. Agreement between HRCT and MRI scores was good or excellent (r > 0.8). HRCT and MRI total scores were significantly related to forced vital capacity (r = -0.5, p = 0.05; and r = -0.7, p = 0.009, respectively) and forced expiratory volume at 1 second (r = -0.6, p = 0.03; and r = -0.7, p = 0.009, respectively). Conclusion Chest high-field 3T MRI appears to be as effective as HRCT in assessing the extent and severity of lung abnormalities in PCD. MRI scores might be used for longitudinal assessment and be an outcome surrogate in future studies.</p
Inhibition of shedding of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 reverses cartilage matrix degradation in osteoarthritis
OBJECTIVE: The aggrecanase ADAMTS-5 and the collagenase matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13) are constitutively secreted by chondrocytes in normal cartilage, but rapidly endocytosed via the cell surface endocytic receptor low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP-1) and subsequently degraded. This endocytic system is impaired in osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage due to increased ectodomain shedding of LRP-1. The aim of this study was to identify the LRP-1 sheddase(s) in human cartilage and to test whether inhibition of LRP-1 shedding prevents cartilage degradation in OA. METHODS: Cell-associated LRP-1 and soluble LRP-1 (sLRP-1) released from human cartilage explants and chondrocytes were measured by Western blot analysis. LRP-1 sheddases were identified by proteinase inhibitor profiling and gene silencing with small interfering RNAs. Specific monoclonal antibodies were used to selectively inhibit the sheddases. Degradation of aggrecan and collagen in human OA cartilage was measured by Western blot analysis using an antibody against an aggrecan neoepitope and a hydroxyproline assay, respectively. RESULTS: Shedding of LRP-1 was increased in OA cartilage compared with normal tissue. Shed sLRP-1 bound to ADAMTS-5 and MMP-13 and prevented their endocytosis without interfering with their proteolytic activities. Two membrane-bound metalloproteinases, ADAM-17 and MMP-14, were identified as the LRP-1 sheddases in cartilage. Inhibition of their activities restored the endocytic capacity of chondrocytes and reduced degradation of aggrecan and collagen in OA cartilage. CONCLUSION: Shedding of LRP-1 is a key link to OA progression. Local inhibition of LRP-1 sheddase activities of ADAM-17 and MMP-14 is a unique way to reverse matrix degradation in OA cartilage and could be effective as a therapeutic approach
