    Effect of Polarimetric Noise on the Estimation of Twist and Magnetic Energy of Force-Free Fields

    The force-free parameter α\alpha, also known as helicity parameter or twist parameter, bears the same sign as the magnetic helicity under some restrictive conditions. The single global value of α\alpha for a whole active region gives the degree of twist per unit axial length. We investigate the effect of polarimetric noise on the calculation of global α\alpha value and magnetic energy of an analytical bipole. The analytical bipole has been generated using the force-free field approximation with a known value of constant α\alpha and magnetic energy. The magnetic parameters obtained from the analytical bipole are used to generate Stokes profiles from the Unno-Rachkovsky solutions for polarized radiative transfer equations. Then we add random noise of the order of 103^{-3} of the continuum intensity (Ic_{c}) in these profiles to simulate the real profiles obtained by modern spectropolarimeters like Hinode (SOT/SP), SVM (USO), ASP, DLSP, POLIS, SOLIS etc. These noisy profiles are then inverted using a Milne-Eddington inversion code to retrieve the magnetic parameters. Hundred realizations of this process of adding random noise and polarimetric inversion is repeated to study the distribution of error in global α\alpha and magnetic energy values. The results show that : (1). the sign of α\alpha is not influenced by polarimetric noise and very accurate values of global twist can be calculated, and (2). accurate estimation of magnetic energy with uncertainty as low as 0.5% is possible under the force-free condition.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in the Ap

    Hybrid SPECT-CT for characterizing isolated vertebral lesions observed by bone scintigraphy: comparison with planar scintigraphy, SPECT, and CT

    PURPOSEWe aimed to assess the role of single photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) for characterizing isolated vertebral lesions observed by bone scintigraphy compared to planar scintigraphy, SPECT, and CT, and to evaluate the impact of SPECT-CT on patient management. MATERIALS AND METHODSData from 99 patients (mean age, 52.4±18.9 years; females, 58.5%) with 108 isolated vertebral lesions visible on planar bone scintigraphy, who had undergone SPECT-CT of a selected volume, were retrospectively analyzed. Planar scintigraphy, SPECT, CT, and SPECT-CT images were independently evaluated in separate sessions to minimize recall bias. A scoring scale of 1 to 5 was used, with 1 being definitely metastatic, 2 most likely metastatic, 3 indeterminate, 4 most likely benign, and 5 definitely benign. Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values were calculated; a score ≤3 was defined as metastatic. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated and compared. Clinical and imaging followup with or without histopathology were used as a reference standard. RESULTSAmong the 108 lesions, 49 were indeterminate on planar scintigraphy, 16 on SPECT, and one each on SPECT-CT and CT. SPECT-CT was superior to both planar scintigraphy (P < 0.001) and SPECT alone (P = 0.014), but not to CT (P = 0.302). CT was superior to planar scintigraphy (P < 0.001) but only slightly superior to SPECT (P = 0.063). SPECT-CT correctly characterized 96% of the indeterminate lesions observed by planar scintigraphy. SPECT-CT had an impact on the clinical management of 60.6% patients compared to planar scintigraphy and 18.1% compared to SPECT. CONCLUSIONSPECT-CT is better than planar scintigraphy and SPECT alone, but not CT alone, for characterizing equivocal vertebral lesions that are observed by bone scintigraphy, thus SPECT-CT can have a significant impact on patient management

    Background: There are no prospective studies that evaluated airway changes during labor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate airway changes in women undergoing labor and delivery. Methods: Two studies were undertaken to evaluate airway changes during labor. The first study used the conventional Samsoon modification of the Mallampati airway class. The airway was photographed at the onset and the end of labor. Women with class 4 airways were excluded from initial participation. In the second study, upper airway volumes were measured using acoustic reflectometry at the onset and the conclusion of labor. Acoustic reflectometry software computed the values for the components of upper airway, oral volume, and pharyngeal volume. Results: In study 1 (n ‫؍‬ 61), there was a significant increase in airway class from prelabor to postlabor (P &lt; 0.001). The airway increased one grade higher in 20 (33%) and two grades higher in 3 (5%) after labor. At the end of labor, there were 8 parturients with airway class 4 (P &lt; 0.01) and 30 parturients with airway class 3 or class 4 (P &lt; 0.001). In study 2 (n ‫؍‬ 21), there were significant decreases in oral volume (n ‫؍‬ 21; P &lt; 0.05), and pharyngeal area (P &lt; 0.05) and volume (P &lt; 0.001) after labor and delivery. No correlation was observed between airway changes during labor and duration of labor, or fluids administered during labor in either study. Conclusion: Airways can change during labor. Therefore, a careful airway evaluation is essential just before administering anesthesia during labor rather than obtaining this information from prelabor data

    Neutrino Interactions in Hot and Dense Matter

    We study the charged and neutral current weak interaction rates relevant for the determination of neutrino opacities in dense matter found in supernovae and neutron stars. We establish an efficient formalism for calculating differential cross sections and mean free paths for interacting, asymmetric nuclear matter at arbitrary degeneracy. The formalism is valid for both charged and neutral current reactions. Strong interaction corrections are incorporated through the in-medium single particle energies at the relevant density and temperature. The effects of strong interactions on the weak interaction rates are investigated using both potential and effective field-theoretical models of matter. We investigate the relative importance of charged and neutral currents for different astrophysical situations, and also examine the influence of strangeness-bearing hyperons. Our findings show that the mean free paths are significantly altered by the effects of strong interactions and the multi-component nature of dense matter. The opacities are then discussed in the context of the evolution of the core of a protoneutron star.Comment: 41 pages, 25 figure
