    Long-term influences of parental divorce on offspring affective disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: The prevalence of divorce in Western countries has increased in recent decades. However, there is no recent systematic review and/or meta-analysis of studies testing for long-term effects of parental divorce on offspring affective disorders. The present study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published since 1980 testing for the association between parental divorce and offspring depression and anxiety in adulthood. Method: PUBMED, Science Direct, Medline, PsychInfo, and PsychArticles databases were searched for eligible studies. Random-effect meta-analyses were used to synthesize effect sizes and to test whether associations of parental divorce with offspring affective disorders differed among three publication periods (i.e., before 1996, 1996–2005, 2006–2015). Results: In total, 29 studies were eligible for the systematic review, and 18 studies were included in the meta-analyses (depression: n=21,581; anxiety: n=2472). There was significant association between parental divorce and offspring depression (OR=1.56; 95%CI [1.31, 1.86]), but not anxiety (OR=1.16; 95%CI [0.98, 1.38]). The effect of parental divorce on offspring depression was not weaker in the reports published in more recent decades. Limitations: There is limited research in relation to offspring anxiety in adulthood. Conclusions: Parental divorce is associated with an increased risk of adult offspring depression, with no indication of the effect being weaker in recent publications

    Thermal properties of electrodeposited bismuth telluride nanowires embedded in amorphous alumina

    3 pages, 3 figures.Bismuth telluride nanowires are of interest for thermoelectric applications because of the predicted enhancement in the thermoelectric figure-of-merit in nanowire structures. In this letter, we carried out temperature-dependent thermal diffusivity characterization of a 40 nm diameter Bi2Te3 nanowires/alumina nanocomposite. Measured thermal diffusivity of the composite decreases from 9.2×10–7 m2 s–1 at 150 K to 6.9×10–7 m2 s–1 at 300 K and is lower than thermal diffusivity of unfilled alumina templates. Effective medium calculations indicate that the thermal conductivity along nanowires axis is at least an order of magnitude lower than thermal conductivity of the bulk bismuth telluride.G.C. would like to acknowledge financial support from JPL and DOE.     Embryonic vitamin D deficiency programs hematopoietic stem cells to induce type 2 diabetes

    Environmental factors may alter the fetal genome to cause metabolic diseases. It is unknown whether embryonic immune cell programming impacts the risk of type 2 diabetes in later life. We demonstrate that transplantation of fetal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) made vitamin D deficient in utero induce diabetes in vitamin D-sufficient mice. Vitamin D deficiency epigenetically suppresses Jarid2 expression and activates the Mef2/PGC1a pathway in HSCs, which persists in recipient bone marrow, resulting in adipose macrophage infiltration. These macrophages secrete miR106-5p, which promotes adipose insulin resistance by repressing PIK3 catalytic and regulatory subunits and down-regulating AKT signaling. Vitamin D-deficient monocytes from human cord blood have comparable Jarid2/Mef2/PGC1a expression changes and secrete miR-106b-5p, causing adipocyte insulin resistance. These findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency during development has epigenetic consequences impacting the systemic metabolic milieu

    The Sphingolipid psychosine inhibits fast axonal transport in krabbe disease by activation of GSK3 and deregulation of molecular motors

    Loss of function of galactosylceramidase lysosomal activity causes demyelination and vulnerability of various neuronal populations in Krabbe disease. Psychosine, a lipid-raft-associated sphingolipid that accumulates in this disease, is thought to trigger these abnormalities. Myelin-free in vitro analyses showed that psychosine inhibited fast axonal transport through the activation of axonal PP1 and GSK3β in the axon. Abnormal levels of activated GSK3β and abnormally phosphorylated kinesin light chains were found in nerve samples from a mouse model of Krabbe disease. Administration of GSK3β inhibitors significantly ameliorated transport defects in vitro and in vivo in peripheral axons of the mutant mouse. This study identifies psychosine as a pathogenic sphingolipid able to block fast axonal transport and is the first to provide a molecular mechanism underlying dying-back degeneration in this genetic leukodystrophy
