    Dangling-bond charge qubit on a silicon surface

    Two closely spaced dangling bonds positioned on a silicon surface and sharing an excess electron are revealed to be a strong candidate for a charge qubit. Based on our study of the coherent dynamics of this qubit, its extremely high tunneling rate ~ 10^14 1/s greatly exceeds the expected decoherence rates for a silicon-based system, thereby overcoming a critical obstacle of charge qubit quantum computing. We investigate possible configurations of dangling bond qubits for quantum computing devices.     Learning Repetition, but not Syllable Reversal

    Reduplication is common, but analogous reversal processes are rare, even though reversal, which involves nested rather than crossed dependencies, is less complex on the Chomsky hierarchy. We hypothesize that the explanation is that repetitions can be recognized when they match and reactivate a stored trace in short-term memory, but recognizing a reversal requires rearranging the input in working memory before attempting to match it to the stored trace. Repetitions can thus be recognized, and repetition patterns learned, implicitly, whereas reversals require explicit, conscious awareness. To test these hypotheses, participants were trained to recognize either a reduplication or a syllable-reversal pattern, and then asked to state the rule. In two experiments, above-chance classification performance on the Reversal pattern was confined to Correct Staters, whereas above-chance performance on the Reduplication pattern was found with or without correct rule-stating. Final proportion correct was positively correlated with final response time for the Reversal Correct Staters but no other group. These results support the hypothesis that reversal, unlike reduplication, requires conscious, time-consuming computation

    Characterizing the rate and coherence of single-electron tunneling between two dangling bonds on the surface of silicon

    We devise a scheme to characterize tunneling of an excess electron shared by a pair of tunnel-coupled dangling bonds on a silicon surface -- effectively a two-level system. Theoretical estimates show that the tunneling should be highly coherent but too fast to be measured by any conventional techniques. Our approach is instead to measure the time-averaged charge distribution of our dangling-bond pair by a capacitively coupled atomic-force-microscope tip in the presence of both a surface-parallel electrostatic potential bias between the two dangling bonds and a tunable midinfrared laser capable of inducing Rabi oscillations in the system. With a nonresonant laser, the time-averaged charge distribution in the dangling-bond pair is asymmetric as imposed by the bias. However, as the laser becomes resonant with the coherent electron tunneling in the biased pair the theory predicts that the time-averaged charge distribution becomes symmetric. This resonant symmetry effect should not only reveal the tunneling rate, but also the nature and rate of decoherence of single-electron dynamics in our system

    Hyper-realistic Face Masks in a Live Passport-Checking Task

    Hyper-realistic face masks have been used as disguises in at least one border crossing and in numerous criminal cases. Experimental tests using these masks have shown that viewers accept them as real faces under a range of conditions. Here, we tested mask detection in a live identity verification task. Fifty-four visitors at the London Science Museum viewed a mask wearer at close range (2 m) as part of a mock passport check. They then answered a series of questions designed to assess mask detection, while the masked traveller was still in view. In the identity matching task, 8% of viewers accepted the mask as matching a real photo of someone else, and 82% accepted the match between masked person and masked photo. When asked if there was any reason to detain the traveller, only 13% of viewers mentioned a mask. A further 11% picked disguise from a list of suggested reasons. Even after reading about mask-related fraud, 10% of viewers judged that the traveller was not wearing a mask. Overall, mask detection was poor and was not predicted by unfamiliar face matching performance. We conclude that hyper-realistic face masks could go undetected during live identity checks

    Star Formation at 4<z<64 < z < 6 From the Spitzer Large Area Survey with Hyper-Suprime-Cam (SPLASH)

    Using the first 50% of data collected for the Spitzer Large Area Survey with Hyper-Suprime-Cam (SPLASH) observations on the 1.8 deg2^2 Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS) we estimate the masses and star formation rates of 3398 M>1010MM_*>10^{10}M_\odot star-forming galaxies at 4<z<64 < z < 6 with a substantial population up to M1011.5MM_* \gtrsim 10^{11.5} M_\odot. We find that the strong correlation between stellar mass and star formation rate seen at lower redshift (the "main sequence" of star-forming galaxies) extends to z6z\sim6. The observed relation and scatter is consistent with a continued increase in star formation rate at fixed mass in line with extrapolations from lower-redshift observations. It is difficult to explain this continued correlation, especially for the most massive systems, unless the most massive galaxies are forming stars near their Eddington-limited rate from their first collapse. Furthermore, we find no evidence for moderate quenching at higher masses, indicating quenching either has not occurred prior to z6z \sim 6 or else occurs rapidly, so that few galaxies are visible in transition between star-forming and quenched.Comment: ApJL, accepte

    JWST Optical Telescope Element Center of Curvature Test

    The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Optical Telescope Element (OTE) and Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) completed element level integration and test programs and were integrated to the next level of assembly called OTE/ISIM (OTIS) at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland in 2016. Before shipping the OTIS to Johnson Space Center (JSC) for optical test at cryogenic temperature a series of vibration and acoustic tests were performed. To help ensure that the OTIS was ready to be shipped to JSC an optical center of curvature (CoC) test was performed to measure changes in the mirror's optical performance to verify that the telescope's primary mirror was not adversely impacted by the environmental testing and help us in understanding potential anomalies identified during the JSC tests. The primary is a 6.5 meter diameter mirror consisting of 18 individual hexagonal segments. Each segment is an off-axis asphere. There are a total of three prescriptions repeated six times each. As part of the CoC test each segment was individually measured using a high-speed interferometer (HSI) designed and built specifically for this test. This interferometer is capable of characterizing both static and dynamic characteristics of the mirrors. The latter capability was used, with the aid of a vibration stinger applying a low-level input force, to measure the dynamic characteristic changes of the PM backplane structure.     PRACTITIONERS VIEW ON QUICK STUDY OF SNOWPACK: HOW TO EXPLAIN THE VOCABULARY FOR POLE PROBE TESTS AND SLOPE CUTTING

    ABSTRACT: As practitioners and heli-ski guides in the Chugach Mountains of Valdez, Alaska we ski cut slopes to mitigate the volume of loose snow avalanches (sluff). We determine if results of slope cuts are probable or not through pole probing the structure and hardness of the snowpack. This includes the top 120cms of the snowpack as this is a common length of a ski pole. We are introducing a new vernacular that clearly describes pole probing and its correlation to slope cut results. Our adage includes data codes used to quickly and easily decipher the structure of the snowpack as well as describe varying degrees of loose snow avalanches. Depths of different hardness are also quantifiable. In a right side up snowpack hardness increases as depth increases. A right side up pole probe with an impenetrable hard layer 45cms down is expressed as PPRU45I. The value after the shorthand represents the depth at which the pole probe becomes impenetrable. Furthermore, slopes with upside down pole probes, where changes in hardness become inconsistent, necessitate a snow pit. We include both CT and ECT as the snowpack may demonstrate a failure in compression but not in shear. We have also elaborated on the existing slope cut data codes used in table 2.12 on page 55 of the &apos;Snow, Weather and Avalanches: Observation Guidelines for Avalanche Programs in the United States&apos; (2009) to include quantifiable amounts of loose snow avalanches. Daily we experience a variety of snow conditions on different aspects and elevations. Creating a dialogue based upon pole probing and slope cutting has improved our efficiency and communication regarding snowpack structure, sluff management and spatial variability
