    MAX1and MAX2 control shoot lateral branching in Arabidopsis

    Plant shoots elaborate their adult form by selective control over the growth of both their primary shoot apical meristem and their axillary shoot meristems. We describe recessive mutations at two loci in Arabidopsis, MAX1 and MAX2, that affect the selective repression of axillary shoots. All the first order (but not higher order) axillary shoots initiated by mutant plants remain active, resulting in bushier shoots than those of wild type. In vegetative plants where axillary shoots develop in a basal to apical sequence, the mutations do not clearly alter node distance, from the shoot apex, at which axillary shoot meristems initiate but shorten the distance at which the first axillary leaf primordium is produced by the axillary shoot meristem. A small number of mutant axillary shoot meristems is enlarged and, later in development, a low proportion of mutant lateral shoots is fasciated. Together, this suggests that MAX1 and MAX2 do not control the timing of axillary meristem initiation but repress primordia formation by the axillary meristem. In addition to shoot branching, mutations at both loci affect leaf shape. The mutations at MAX2 cause increased hypocotyl and petiole elongation in light-grown seedlings. Positional cloning identifies MAX2 as a member of the F-box leucine-rich repeat family of proteins. MAX2 is identical to ORE9, a proposed regulator of leaf senescence (Woo, H. R., Chung, K. M., Park, J.-H., Oh, S. A., Ahn, T., Hong, S. H., Jang, S. K. and Nam, H. G. (2001) Plant Cell 13, 1779-1790). Our results suggest that selective repression of axillary shoots involves ubiquitinmediated degradation of as yet unidentified proteins that activate axillary growth

    Fast human activity recognition in lifelogging

    This paper addresses the problem of fast Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in visual lifelogging. We identify the importance of visual features related to HAR and we specifically evaluate the HAR discrimination potential of Colour Histograms and Histogram of Oriented Gradients. In our evaluation we show that colour can be a low-cost and effective means of low-cost HAR when performing single-user classification. It is also noted that, while much more efficient, global image descriptors perform as well or better than local descriptors in our HAR experiments. We believe that both of these findings are due to the fact that a user’s lifelog is rich in reoccurring scenes and environments

    A cross-sectional study of psychological complaints and quality of life in severely injured patients

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of psychological complaints and the relationship of these complaints with the quality of life (QOL) and accident- and patient-related factors among severely injured patients after the rehabilitation phase. Methods: Patients of 18 years or older with an injury severity score above 15 were included 15-53 months after their accident. Accident and patient characteristics were obtained from questionnaires and the trauma registry. Several questionnaires (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Impact of Events Scale, and Cognitive Failure Questionnaire) were used to determine the symptoms of psychological problems (anxiety or depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or subjective cognitive complaints, respectively). The World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref was used to determine QOL. A reference group of the Dutch general population was used for comparison of QOL scores. Results: The participation rate was 62 % (n = 173). At the time of the study, 30.1 % (n = 52) of the investigated patients had psychological complaints. No relation between psychological complaints and somatic severity or type of injury was found. Patients who were employed before the accident or resumed working reported less psychological complaints. Use of any medication before the accident and treatment for pre-accidental psychological problems were positively related to psychological complaints afterwards. QOL of severely injured patients was impaired in comparison with the general Dutch population, but only for those with psychological complaints. Conclusions: Psychological complaints seem to be an important and underestimated factor for a decreased QOL among severely injured patients

    The connection between mass, environment and slow rotation in simulated galaxies

    Recent observations from integral field spectroscopy (IFS) indicate that the fraction of galaxies that are slow rotators, FSRF_{\rm SR}, depends primarily on stellar mass, with no significant dependence on environment. We investigate these trends and the formation paths of slow rotators (SRs) using the EAGLE and Hydrangea hydro-dynamical simulations. EAGLE consists of several cosmological boxes of volumes up to (100 Mpc)3(100\,\rm Mpc)^3, while Hydrangea consists of 2424 cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters and their environment. Together they provide a statistically significant sample in the stellar mass range 109.5 M⊙−1012.3 M⊙10^{9.5}\,\rm M_{\odot}-10^{12.3}\,\rm M_{\odot}, of 16,35816,358 galaxies. We construct IFS-like cubes and measure stellar spin parameters, λR\lambda_{\rm R}, and ellipticities, allowing us to classify galaxies into slow/fast rotators as in observations. The simulations display a primary dependence of FSRF_{\rm SR} on stellar mass, with a weak dependence on environment. At fixed stellar mass, satellite galaxies are more likely to be SRs than centrals. FSRF_{\rm SR} shows a dependence on halo mass at fixed stellar mass for central galaxies, while no such trend is seen for satellites. We find that ≈70\approx 70% of SRs at z=0z=0 have experienced at least one merger with mass ratio ≥0.1\ge 0.1, with dry mergers being at least twice more common than wet mergers. Individual dry mergers tend to decrease λR\lambda_{\rm R}, while wet mergers mostly increase it. However, 3030% of SRs at z=0z=0 have not experienced mergers, and those inhabit halos with median spins twice smaller than the halos hosting the rest of the SRs.     Background: Former studies have demonstrated that health-related quality of life is decreased in severely injured patients. However, in those studies patients were asked about their functioning and not about their (dis)contentment concerning their functioning. Little is known about how severely injured patients experience their quality of life (QOL). The objective of this cross-sectional study was to measure this subjective QOL of severely injured patients after their rehabilitation phase and to examine which accident- and patient-related factors affect the QOL of these patients. Methods: Patients of 18 years or older with an injury severity score (ISS) above 15 were included 15-53 months after their accident. Comorbidity before the accident, accident and sociodemographic characteristics, and QOL were obtained from the trauma registry and questionnaires. The WHOQOL-BREF was used to measure QOL. A reference group of the Dutch general population was used for comparison. Results: The participation rate was 61% (n = 173). Compared with the reference data, severely injured patients experienced a significantly worse QOL in all domains except social relations. The QOL scores were significantly decreased in all domains for patients with intracranial injury in combination with other injuries. Patients with a severe intracranial injury (AIS > 3) only reported significantly impaired QOL in the general and physical domains. Patients who resumed working or lived with others had significantly higher scores in all domains of QOL than patients who did not work anymore or were living alone. Significantly lower QOL scores were obtained from patients with comorbidity before the accident and from patients with longer durations of intensive care unit (ICU) treatment or hospitalisation. Gender, accident characteristics and time since the accident did not appear to be important for experienced QOL. Conclusions: The experience of impaired QOL appears to depend on living alone, inability to return to work and pre-accidental comorbidity rather than on the injured body area or the severity of the injury. Duration of hospital or ICU stay is important to subsequent QOL, even if ISS or body region is not

    Scenario Extraction from a Large Real-World Dataset for the Assessment of Automated Vehicles

    Many players in the automotive field support scenario-based assessment of automated vehicles (AVs), where individual traffic situations can be tested and, thus, facilitate concluding on the performance of AVs in different situations. Since a large number of different scenarios can occur in real-world traffic, the question is how to find a finite set of relevant scenarios. Scenarios extracted from large real-world datasets represent real-world traffic since real driving data is used. Extracting scenarios, however, is challenging because (1) the scenarios to be tested should assess the AVs behave safely, which conflicts with the fact that the majority of the data contains scenarios that are not interesting from a safety perspective, and (2) extensive data processing is required, which hinders the utilization of large real-world datasets. In this work, we propose an approach for extracting scenarios from real-world driving data. The first step is data preprocessing to tackle the errors and noise in real-world data by reconstructing the data. The second step performs data tagging to label actors' activities, their interactions with each other and the environment. Finally, the scenarios are extracted by searching for combinations of tags. The proposed approach is evaluated using data simulated with CARLA and applied to a part of a large real-world driving dataset, i.e., the Waymo Open Motion Dataset (WOMD). The code and scenarios extracted from WOMD are open to the research community to facilitate the assessment of the automated driving functions in different scenarios.Comment: 6 pages, accepted by ITSC 202

    The Artist-Shaman and the \"Gift of Sight\"

    Throughout the history of art the role of the artist has been compared to the role of the shaman. This is because the artist’s role has always been one of mediator, transformer and most prominently visionary. The role of both the artist and shaman has always been to stand between two worlds: that of the visible and the invisible. The viewers, or the community in the case of the shaman, entrust the artist to go forth into the realm of the invisible and return with a gift: the invisible transformed into the visible. Traditionally, many artists associated with shamanism such as Joseph Beuys, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington and later Matthew Barney, have been leaders, idealists, heroes of mythic proportions, artists who return with this gift: a vision or sight to follow. But a different breed of artist associated with shamanism also exists: an ambivalent artist-shaman, a shifty and unreliable character of dubious motivations, who appears to offer the viewer a vision or sight and then throws it back in their face, makes them decide. This is the role that Hany Armanious, John Bock, Carla Cescon, Marcus Coates, Mikala Dwyer, Steinar Haga Kristensen, Jonathan Meese, Paul Thek, Justene Williams and myself have taken. And we take it so as to return to the viewer the very power that is invested in the artist, that of creating a vision: what Rex Butler refers to in relation to Hany Armanious as the “gift of sight.” (Butler 2000). These artists and myself offer the “gift of sight” by reflecting the act of perception and by engaging the viewer in the same process that the artist goes through. The way we do this is by setting up complex, multi-positional, process-based systems that are highly informed and engaging but do not lead to an end position. Because the artist does not presume to idealise this end position, the result is inevitably confusing, slippery, uncertain, and ambivalent, as if the artist has no position or avoids commitment. This thesis sets out to inves! tigate t his ambivalent position taken by the artist-shaman and to show how and why it is taken. It does this in two ways. Firstly it provides a studio component as a practical example of the practice of an artist-shaman who offers the “gift of sight.” Secondly, the written dissertation provides a theory and understanding of the artist-shaman who offers the “gift of sight.” This may then be applied to the practical component, offering a historical and philosophical context with which to frame it
