    Intrasound Therapy Improves the Mechanical Properties and the Morphology of Tendons in Fluoroquinolone-Induced Achilles Tendinopathy

    Fluoroquinolones (FQs), especially Pefloxacin (PEF) have been reported to increase risk of Achilles tendon rupture. However, prior studies showed that intrasound therapy (ITR) significantly improved the morphology of the healing tendon. This study aimed to compare the effects of 7, 14 and 21 days intrasound treatment on the mechanical properties and morphology of the Achilles tendon in fifty (50) male Sprague-Dawley rats induced with FQ and randomized into three main categories designated as Normal control (A), Experimental control (B) and Treatment groups (C). All animals in groups B and C were orally administered PEF 400mg/kg in a fixed volume of 2.5 ml/kg daily for 6 consecutive days. The Achilles tendon of both hind limbs in group C were treated with the lowest intensity ITR 5 minutes daily for 7, 14 and 21 consecutive days. All the animals were serially sacrificed on days 8, 15 and 22 and the tendons excised and processed. Data were analyzed with RSTUDIO version 4.0.02 and the level of significance set at 0.05. Kruskal Wallis showed no significant differences (p >0.05) in all the biomechanical parameters across all the groups. Compared with group B, ITR 14 days treatment had the best improvement in all biomechanical variables, though insignificant (p>0.05). In the Intrasound groups, there were significant positive correlations of Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) with ultimate tensile stress and tensile load (p= 0.005; p=0.003) respectively.     Insulin receptor and glucose transporter-4 expression in the skeletal muscle of chronically stressed rats

    Background: Stress defined as a disruption in the normal homeostatic functions of an organism caused by stressor (a physiological or psychological challenge) is an unavoidable normal component of life. Previous studies suggest that stress hormones have acute adverse effects on glycaemic control. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of chronic psychological and physical stress on the expression of insulin receptor and GLUT4 transporters in male Sprague-Dawley rats.Methods: Male rats (12 weeks old) were randomly distributed into 3 groups: control, water avoidance stress (WAS), forced swimming stress (FSS). The stress procedures were performed between 9:00 and 11:00 am to minimize the effect of circadian rhythm and lasted for 28 consecutive days. Levels of insulin and corticosterone in the blood were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Glucose metabolism was assessed by glucose tolerance test (GTT) and insulin tolerance test (ITT), and expression of insulin receptor (INSR) and glucose transporter-4 (GLUT4) in skeletal muscle.Results: The FSS rats had decreased food intake as well as final body weight and without adverse changes in GTT, stress worsened insulin sensitivity in FSS rats and increased insulin in the blood. Stress also increased corticosterone, decreased INSR and GLUT4 in the skeletal muscle of both groups.Conclusion: Chronic stress evokes insulin insensitivity and impairs glucose metabolism through the down-regulation of INSR and GLUT4 in skeletal muscles.Keywords: Chronic Stress, Glucose Tolerance, Glucose Transporter, Insulin Sensitivity, Corticosteron

    Analysis of the Extent of Red Light Running in Minna, North-Central Nigeria

    This research pursued the objectives of assessing the awareness, perception, and levels of adherence of road users to traffic rules and regulations. The study was carried out in Minna and the major signalized roads were the target of the research. The research applied the survey research methodology, which involves carrying volumetric count of vehicles running the red lights on the signalized routes. The research, therefore, found out that, majority of the violators of the traffic signals were the motorcycle riders, closely followed by the tricycle operators; the commercial vehicle owners also form a major percentage of violators of the red light rules in the city. The research, therefore, recommended that strict measures aimed at ensuring immediate compliance with the traffic signals should be implemented, through fines and sanctions on violators to impoundment of offending vehicles. The research concluded that, if instant measures are not put in place to check the menace of the red light running, it will have a serious adverse effect on the social and economic strata of the city

    Observational constraints on the neutron star mass distribution

    Radio observations of neutron star binary pulsar systems have constrained strongly the masses of eight neutron stars. Assuming neutron star masses are uniformly distributed between lower and upper bounds mlm_l and mum_u, the observations determine with 95\% confidence that 1.01<ml/M<1.341.01 < m_l/\text{M}_\odot < 1.34 and 1.43<mu/M<1.641.43 < m_u/\text{M}_\odot < 1.64. These limits give observational support to neutron star formation scenarios that suggest that masses should fall predominantly in the range 1.3<m/M<1.61.3<m/\text{M}_\odot<1.6, and will also be important in the interpretation of binary inspiral observations by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory.Comment: Postscript, 4 pages, NU-GR-

    A Nanofiber-Based Optical Conveyor Belt for Cold Atoms

    We demonstrate optical transport of cold cesium atoms over millimeter-scale distances along an optical nanofiber. The atoms are trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice formed by a two-color evanescent field surrounding the nanofiber, far red- and blue-detuned with respect to the atomic transition. The blue-detuned field is a propagating nanofiber-guided mode while the red-detuned field is a standing-wave mode which leads to the periodic axial confinement of the atoms. Here, this standing wave is used for transporting the atoms along the nanofiber by mutually detuning the two counter-propagating fields which form the standing wave. The performance and limitations of the nanofiber-based transport are evaluated and possible applications are discussed

    In vitro Degradation of Extracted Cassava Linamarin by Bacillus Species Isolated from cassava wastewater

    Linamarin is the most abundant cyanoglucoside present in cassava cells and may generate the equivalent amount of hydrocyanic acid. This study was aimed to assess degradative capacities of Bacillus pumilus strain WOB3 and WOB7on linamarin. The test organisms for linamarase activity were identified on the basis of phenotype, biochemical properties and 16S rDNA gene sequencing as: Bacillus pumilus strain WOB3 KX774195 and Bacillus pumilus strain WOB7 KX774196. Growth studies showed that the strains grew in all the substrates tested. The doubling times of Bacillus pumilus strain WOB3 and Bacillus pumilus strain WOB7 were 8.25 d and 7.53 d on cassava effluent, 6.30 dand 5.78 d on supplemented cassava effluent, 8.66 dand 9.90 d on waste leachate and 6.30 d and 9.24 d on supplemented waste leachate respectively; with specific growth rates of 0.084 d-1 and 0.092 d-1 on cassava effluent, 0.11 d-1 and 0.12 d-1 on supplemented cassava effluent, 0.080 d-1 and 0.070 d-1 on waste leachate and 0.11 d-1 and 0.075 d-1 on supplemented waste leachate respectively. High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis studies revealed that linamarin degradation by the strains followed a linamarase pathway involving CO2 and HCN as metabolic intermediates. Based on HPLC analysis, linamarin residual concentration at day 12 by the strains WOB3 and WOB7 was 26.73 mgL-1(19.79 %) and 29.79 mgL-1 (21.92 %). These novel features make the bacteria suitable candidates for in-situ application on sites contaminated with cassava processing wastes

    Histopathologic Features of Mycobacterium ulcerans Infection

    Because of the emergence of Buruli ulcer disease, the World Health Organization launched a Global Buruli Ulcer Initiative in 1998. This indolent skin infection is caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. During a study of risk factors for the disease in Ghana, adequate excisional skin-biopsy specimens were obtained from 124 clinically suspicious lesions. Buruli ulcer disease was diagnosed in 78 lesions since acid-fast bacilli (AFB) were found by histopathologic examination. Lesions with other diagnoses included filariasis (3 cases), zygomycosis (2 cases), ulcerative squamous cell carcinomas (2 cases), keratin cyst (1 case), and lymph node (1 case). Thirty-seven specimens that did not show AFB were considered suspected Buruli ulcer disease cases. Necrosis of subcutaneous tissues and dermal collagen were found more frequently in AFB-positive specimens compared with specimens from suspected case-patients (p<0.001). Defining histologic criteria for a diagnosis of Buruli ulcer disease is of clinical and public health importance since it would allow earlier treatment, leading to less deforming sequelae

    The categorical model of personality disorder classification in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed. [DSM-5]; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) is highly and fundamentally problematic. Proposed for DSM-5 and provided within Section III (for Emerging Measures and Models) was the Alternative Model of Personality Disorder (AMPD) classification, consisting of Criterion A (self-interpersonal deficits) and Criterion B (maladaptive personality traits). A proposed alternative to the DSM-5 more generally is an empirically based dimensional organization of psychopathology identified as the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP; Kotov etal., 2017). HiTOP currently includes, at the highest level, a general factor of psychopathology. Further down are the five domains of detachment, antagonistic externalizing, disinhibited externalizing, thought disorder, and internalizing (along with a provisional sixth somatoform dimension) that align with Criterion B. The purpose of this article is to discuss the potential inclusion and placement of the self-interpersonal deficits of the DSM-5 Section III Criterion A within HiTOP

    Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
