Nonabelian Duality and Solvable Large N Lattice Systems
We introduce the basics of the nonabelian duality transformation of SU(N) or
U(N) vector-field models defined on a lattice. The dual degrees of freedom are
certain species of the integer-valued fields complemented by the symmetric
groups' \otimes_{n} S(n) variables. While the former parametrize relevant
irreducible representations, the latter play the role of the Lagrange
multipliers facilitating the fusion rules involved. As an application, I
construct a novel solvable family of SU(N) D-matrix systems graded by the rank
1\leq{k}\leq{(D-1)} of the manifest [U(N)]^{\oplus k} conjugation-symmetry.
Their large N solvability is due to a hidden invariance (explicit in the dual
formulation) which allows for a mapping onto the recently proposed
eigenvalue-models \cite{Dub1} with the largest k=D symmetry. Extending
\cite{Dub1}, we reconstruct a D-dimensional gauge theory with the large N free
energy given (modulo the volume factor) by the free energy of a given proposed
1\leq{k}\leq{(D-1)} D-matrix system. It is emphasized that the developed
formalism provides with the basis for higher-dimensional generalizations of the
Gross-Taylor stringy representation of strongly coupled 2d gauge theories.Comment: TeX, 46 page
A Compact Fiber Optic Eye Diagnostics System
A new fiber optic probe development for determining transport properties of sub-micron particles in fluids experiments in a microgravity environment has been applied to study different parts of the eye. The probe positioned in front of an eye, delivers a low power (approximately a few mu W) light from a laser diode into the eye and guides the light which is back scattered by different components (aqueous humor, lens, and vitreous humor) of the eye through a receiving optical fiber to a photo detector. The probe provides rapid determination of macromolecular diffusivities and their respective size distributions in the eye lens and the gel-like material in the vitreous humor. For a clinical use, the probe is mounted on a standard slit-lamp apparatus simply using Hruby lens holder. The capability of detecting cataracts, both nuclear and cortical, in their early stages of formation, in a non invasive and quantitative fashion, has the potential in patient monitoring and in developing and testing new drugs or diet therapies to 'dissolve' or slow down the cataract formation before the surgery becomes necessary. The ability to detect biochemical and macromolecular changes in the vitreous structure can be very useful in identifying certain diseases of the posterior chamber and their complications, e.g., posterior vitreous detachment and diabetic retinopathy
Charge Radii and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Rho and K* Mesons in QCD String Theory
The effective action for light mesons in the external uniform static
electromagnetic fields was obtained on the basis of QCD string theory. We imply
that in the presence of light quarks the area law of the Wilson loop integral
is valid. The approximation of the Nambu-Goto straight-line string is used to
simplify the problem. The Coulomb-like short-range contribution which goes from
one-gluon exchange is also neglected. We do not take into account spin-orbital
and spin-spin interactions of quarks and observe the and mesons.
The wave function of the meson ground state is the Airy function. Using the
virial theorem we estimate the mean charge radii of mesons in terms of the
string tension and the Airy function zero. On the basis of the perturbative
theory, in the small external magnetic field we find the diamagnetic
polarizabilities of and mesons: , Comment: 22 pages, no figures, in LaTeX 2.09, typos correcte
Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Modulates NKG2D Receptor Expression and Memory Phenotype of Human Gamma/Delta T Cells Upon Interaction With Tumor Cells
The functional plasticity and anti-tumor potential of human γδ T cells have been widely studied. However, the epigenetic regulation of γδ T-cell/tumor cell interactions has been poorly investigated. In the present study, we show that treatment with the histone deacetylase inhibitor Valproic acid (VPA) significantly enhanced the expression and/or release of the NKG2D ligands MICA, MICB and ULBP-2, but not ULBP-1 in the pancreatic carcinoma cell line Panc89 and the prostate carcinoma cell line PC-3. Under in vitro tumor co-culture conditions, the expression of full length and the truncated form of the NKG2D receptor in γδ T cells was significantly downregulated. Furthermore, using a newly established flow cytometry-based method to analyze histone acetylation (H3K9ac) in γδ T cells, we showed constitutive H3K9aclow and inducible H3K9achigh expression in Vδ2 T cells. The detailed analysis of H3K9aclow Vδ2 T cells revealed a significant reversion of TEMRA to TEM phenotype during in vitro co-culture with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells. Our study uncovers novel mechanisms of how epigenetic modifiers modulate γδ T-cell differentiation during interaction with tumor cells. This information is important when considering combination therapy of VPA with the γδ T-cell-based immunotherapy for the treatment of certain types of cancer
Homeostatic Regulation of Salmonella-Induced Mucosal Inflammation and Injury by IL-23
IL-12 and IL-23 regulate innate and adaptive immunity to microbial pathogens through influencing the expression of IFN-γ, IL-17, and IL-22. Herein we define the roles of IL-12 and IL-23 in regulating host resistance and intestinal inflammation during acute Salmonella infection. We find that IL-23 alone is dispensable for protection against systemic spread of bacteria, but synergizes with IL-12 for optimal protection. IL-12 promotes the production of IFN-γ by NK cells, which is required for resistance against Salmonella and also for induction of intestinal inflammation and epithelial injury. In contrast, IL-23 controls the severity of inflammation by inhibiting IL-12A expression, reducing IFN-γ and preventing excessive mucosal injury. Our studies demonstrate that IL-23 is a homeostatic regulator of IL-12-dependent, IFN-γ-mediated intestinal inflammation
