    Design of an autonomous software platform for future symbiotic service management

    Nowadays, public as well as private communication infrastructures are all contending for the same limited amount of bandwidth. To optimally share network resources, symbiotic networks have been proposed, which cross logical and physical boundaries to improve the reliability, scalability, and energy efficiency of the network as a whole as well as its constituents. This paper focuses on software services in such symbiotic networks. We propose a platform for the intelligent composition of services provided by symbiotically connected parties, resulting in novel cooperation opportunities. The platform harvests Semantic Web technology to describe services in a highly expressive manner, and constructs service compositions using SeCoA, our tunable best-first search algorithm. The resulting compositions are then enacted via CaPI, a reconfigurable middleware infrastructure. By means of an illustrative scenario, we provide further insight into the platform's functioning

    Does virulence assessment of Vibrio anguillarum using sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae correspond with genotypic and phenotypic characterization?

    Background: Vibriosis is one of the most ubiquitous fish diseases caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Vibrio such as Vibrio (Listonella) anguillarum. Despite a lot of research efforts, the virulence factors and mechanism of V. anguillarum are still insufficiently known, in part because of the lack of standardized virulence assays. Methodology/Principal Findings: We investigated and compared the virulence of 15 V. anguillarum strains obtained from different hosts or non-host niches using a standardized gnotobiotic bioassay with European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) larvae as model hosts. In addition, to assess potential relationships between virulence and genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, the strains were characterized by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR (rep-PCR) analyses, as well as by phenotypic analyses using Biolog's Phenotype MicroArray (TM) technology and some virulence factor assays. Conclusions/Significance: Virulence testing revealed ten virulent and five avirulent strains. While some relation could be established between serotype, genotype and phenotype, no relation was found between virulence and genotypic or phenotypic characteristics, illustrating the complexity of V. anguillarum virulence. Moreover, the standardized gnotobiotic system used in this study has proven its strength as a model to assess and compare the virulence of different V. anguillarum strains in vivo. In this way, the bioassay contributes to the study of mechanisms underlying virulence in V. anguillarum

    ConvDTW-ACS: Audio Segmentation for Track Type Detection During Car Manufacturing

    This paper proposes a method for Acoustic Constrained Segmentation (ACS) in audio recordings of vehicles driven through a production test track, delimiting the boundaries of surface types in the track. ACS is a variant of classical acoustic segmentation where the sequence of labels is known, contiguous and invariable, which is especially useful in this work as the test track has a standard configuration of surface types. The proposed ConvDTW-ACS method utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network for classifying overlapping image chunks extracted from the full audio spectrogram. Then, our custom Dynamic Time Warping algorithm aligns the sequence of predicted probabilities to the sequence of surface types in the track, from which timestamps of the surface type boundaries can be extracted. The method was evaluated on a real-world dataset collected from the Ford Manufacturing Plant in Valencia (Spain), achieving a mean error of 166 milliseconds when delimiting, within the audio, the boundaries of the surfaces in the track. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in accurately segmenting different surface types, which could enable the development of more specialized AI systems to improve the quality inspection process.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Towards Managing Variability in the Safety Design of an Automotive Hall Effect Sensor

    ABSTRACT This paper discusses the merits and challenges of adopting software product line engineering (SPLE) as the main development process for an automotive Hall Effect sensor. This versatile component is integrated into a number of automotive applications with varying safety requirements (e.g., windshield wipers and brake pedals). This paper provides a detailed explanation as to why the process of safety assessment and verification of the Hall Effect sensor is currently cumbersome and repetitive: it must be repeated entirely for every automotive application in which the sensor is to be used. In addition, no support is given to the engineer to select and configure the appropriate safety solutions and to explain the safety implications of his decisions. To address these problems, we present a tailored SPLEbased approach that combines model-driven development with advanced model composition techniques for applying and reasoning about specific safety solutions. In addition, we provide insights about how this approach can reduce the overall complexity, improve reusability, and facilitate safety assessment of the Hall Effect sensor

    Effect of a carotenoid-producing Bacillus strain on intestinal barrier integrity and systemic delivery of carotenoids : a randomised trial in animals and humans

    The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of the carotenoid-producing Bacillus indicus strain PD01 on intestinal barrier function and its ability to survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract and to assess systemic bioavailability of these carotenoids in vivo. As model for impaired barrier function, 16 early weaned piglets were randomly assigned to a control diet or control diet with PD01 for 23 days. In addition, 67 overweight/obese, otherwise healthy individuals were randomly assigned to groups receiving PD01 or placebo for 6 weeks. PD01 survived passage through the gastrointestinal tract in piglets and human subjects and resulted in significant accumulation of PD01 derived carotenoids (methyl-glycosyl-apo-8'-lycopenoate and glycosyl-apo-8'- lycopene) in human plasma after 3- and 6-weeks supplementation versus baseline (0.044 and 0.076 vs 0 mu M, respectively; p = 0.104). In summary, PD01 survived transit through the gastrointestinal tract, resulted in systemic carotenoid accumulation and improved compromised barrier function outcomes
