This thesis explores hegemonic discourses associated with the constructs of gender, culture, and transglobal migration from China to the United States and how these discourses might be made visible, resisted, internalized, reappropriated, and queered through live performance. This thesis used the methodology of critical adaptation and adapted Maxine Hong Kingston\u27s novel The Woman Warrior (1976) into a one-woman performance that explored hegemonic social structures of gender, culture, and transglobal migration and the ways in which identity is constructed and performed. Through a critical adaptation and performance of literature, this thesis reflects, expands, and raises some of the nuanced issues of transglobal identity that move between structures of marginality and empowerment. The timeline of this thesis project expanded over the course of a year and a half. The spring semester in 2009 was dedicated to adapting Maxine Hong Kingston\u27s novel The Woman Warrior. In the beginning months of the fall of 2009, the prospectus was written and the performance was rehearsed. In the month of October, the prospectus defense was held and of the performance was premiered on the evenings of November 5th, 6th, and 7th in Hugh Gillis Hall room 231 at San José State University. And lastly, in the spring semester of 2010, the analytical portion was completed

Power distribution in ambiguous times: the effects of the financial crisis on executive decision-making in Germany and Spain

This article examines the dynamics of executive decision-making in Germany and Spain during the global financial and economic crisis between 2008 and 2009. It applies the power-distributional approach and argues that distinct features of the institutional context affect the institutionalisation of decision-making arrangements during crises. In particular, it examines how the principles structuring cabinet and the nexus between the executive and the legislative influence the change or inertia of arrangements for executive decision-making. The comparative analysis reveals that both countries experienced a centralisation of executive decisionmaking, albeit less in Germany than in Spain. These differences are caused by the institutional setting of both countries constraining the Chancellor’s authority in Germany and permitting the dominance of the Spanish Prime Minister (PM) in cabinet. Furthermore, the relationships between the executive and the legislative obstruct a strong centralisation of executive decision-making in Germany, also because party-political actors are aligned to compromises in the executive, and facilitate a centralisation of executive decision-making in Spain, supported by extraordinary law-making procedures which have been applied in order to circumvent parliamentary and thus party-political debates.

    Get PDF

Students’ understanding of the function-derivative relationship when learning economic concepts

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to characterise students’ understanding of the function-derivative relationship when learning economic concepts. To this end, we use a fuzzy metric (Chang 1968) to identify the development of economic concept understanding that is defined by the function-derivative relationship. The results indicate that the understanding of these economic concepts is linked to students’ capacity to perform conversions and treatments between the algebraic and graphic registers of the function-derivative relationship when extracting the economic meaning of concavity/convexity in graphs of functions using the second derivative

Soybean cultivars subjected to narrow row spacing and plant populations in early sowing in subtropical region in southern Brazil: Cultivares de soja submetidas ao espaçamento reduzido e populações de plantas em semeadura antecipada em região subtropical no sul do Brasil

Spatial arrangement between plants and sowing time used are decisive practices for obtaining adequate agronomic performance in soybean crop. The aim of this work was to evaluate morphological attributes, yield components and grain yield of soybean cultivars installed with different row spacing and seeding densities, in early (10/04/2017) and conventional (11/08/2017) sowing dates in subtropical climate region in southern Brazil. The experimental design was in a 2×2×4 factorial arrangement: soybean cultivars BRS 433 RR (MG 5.8) and BRS 1003 IPRO (MG 6.3) installed with row spacing of 25 and 50 cm and seeding densities of 160,000; 240,000; 320,000; and 400,000 viable seeds ha-1. Morphological attributes and yield components are altered by spatial arrangement between plants and cultivar, with variable responses according to the sowing date. In the early sowing date, soybean has yield raise due to the increase in seeding density with different responses between cultivars. In the conventional sowing date, soybean installed with 25-cm row spacing has an increase in 1000-grains weight. In the conventional sowing date, there is an increase in soybean yield installed with 25-cm row spacing associated with a seeding density of 320,000 to 400,000 viable seeds ha-1

Phytotechnical positioning procedures in soybean crop must be validated in the context of the interaction between genotype, environment and management. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of soybean cultivars sown in different row spacing, in early (October 8th) and conventional (November 12th) sowing dates in a subtropical climate region of southern Brazil. The experimental design was in an 18 × 2 factorial scheme, with four replications. The factors were constituted by 18 soybean cultivars (with a maturity group of 5.3 to 6.4) installed with row spacing of 25 and 50 cm. Final plant population, plant height, lodging, 1000-grains weight and grain yield were evaluated. The row spacing and the cultivar used interfere in the agronomic performance of soybean, regardless of sowing date. The narrow row spacing of 25 cm increases the 1000-grains weight and the soybean grain yield, regardless of cultivar and sowing date, with the most pronounced augments in the conventional sowing date. In general, the most yield cultivars were M 5947 IPRO and M 6410 IPRO.Phytotechnical positioning procedures in soybean crop must be validated in the context of the interaction between genotype, environment and management. Get PDF

On Grand-Mentors and Great-Grand-Mentors: Reflecting on Graduate Program Support for a Multigenerational Mentorship Model

    Get PDF
Doctoral programs often reflect a formal mentoring project wherein an advisor closely guides a junior scholar through degree completion. But the primary mentor-mentee relationship is only one of many relationships that blossoms during this time. ‘Mosaic’ mentorship models are becoming more common, leading to better outcomes for junior scholars. In this commentary, we reflect on one type of mosaic mentorship model wherein multiple ‘generations’ mentor more junior scholars (and mentor those who are doing the mentoring, too). The authors are five links in this continuing mentorship chain. Together we reflect on what made this style of mentorship a unique and positive experience, and how graduate programs can support their students by encouraging this model
