Three fermions in a box at the unitary limit: universality in a lattice model
We consider three fermions with two spin components interacting on a lattice
model with an infinite scattering length. Low lying eigenenergies in a cubic
box with periodic boundary conditions, and for a zero total momentum, are
calculated numerically for decreasing values of the lattice period. The results
are compared to the predictions of the zero range Bethe-Peierls model in
continuous space, where the interaction is replaced by contact conditions. The
numerical computation, combined with analytical arguments, shows the absence of
negative energy solution, and a rapid convergence of the lattice model towards
the Bethe-Peierls model for a vanishing lattice period. This establishes for
this system the universality of the zero interaction range limit.Comment: 6 page
Measurement of interaction energy near a Feshbach resonance in a 6Li Fermi gas
We investigate the strongly interacting regime in an optically trapped Li
Fermi mixture near a Feshbach resonance. The resonance is found at G
in good agreement with theory. Anisotropic expansion of the gas is interpreted
by collisional hydrodynamics. We observe an unexpected and large shift (G)
between the resonance peak and both the maximum of atom loss and the change of
sign of the interaction energy.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Cold atom Clocks and Applications
This paper describes advances in microwave frequency standards using
laser-cooled atoms at BNM-SYRTE. First, recent improvements of the Cs
and Rb atomic fountains are described. Thanks to the routine use of a
cryogenic sapphire oscillator as an ultra-stable local frequency reference, a
fountain frequency instability of where
is the measurement time in seconds is measured. The second advance is a
powerful method to control the frequency shift due to cold collisions. These
two advances lead to a frequency stability of at 7\times 10^{-16}^{87}^{133}$Cs fountains.
Finally we give an update on the cold atom space clock PHARAO developed in
collaboration with CNES. This clock is one of the main instruments of the
ACES/ESA mission which is scheduled to fly on board the International Space
Station in 2008, enabling a new generation of relativity tests.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figure
Oxygen tension regulates the miRNA profile and bioactivity of exosomes released from extravillous trophoblast cells - liquid biopsies for monitoring complications of pregnancy
Our understanding of how cells communicate has undergone a paradigm shift since the recent recognition of the role of exosomes in intercellular signaling. In this study, we investigated whether oxygen tension alters the exosome release and miRNA profile from extravillous trophoblast (EVT) cells, modifying their bioactivity on endothelial cells (EC). Furthermore, we have established the exosomal miRNA profile at early gestation in women who develop pre-eclampsia (PE) and spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB). HTR-8/SVneo cells were used as an EVT model. The effect of oxygen tension (i.e. 8% and 1% oxygen) on exosome release was quantified using nanocrystals (Qdot®) coupled to CD63 by fluorescence NTA. A real-time, live-cell imaging system (Incucyte™) was used to establish the effect of exosomes on EC. Plasma samples were obtained at early gestation (<18 weeks) and classified according to pregnancy outcomes. An Illumina TrueSeq Small RNA kit was used to construct a small RNA library from exosomal RNA obtained from EVT and plasma samples. The number of exosomes was significantly higher in EVT cultured under 1% compared to 8% oxygen. In total, 741 miRNA were identified in exosomes from EVT. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that these miRNA were associated with cell migration and cytokine production. Interestingly, exosomes isolated from EVT cultured at 8% oxygen increased EC migration, whilst exosomes cultured at 1% oxygen decreased EC migration. These changes were inversely proportional to TNF-α released from EC. Finally, we have identified a set of unique miRNAs in exosomes from EVT cultured at 1% oxygen and exosomes isolated from the circulation of mothers at early gestation, who later developed PE and SPTB. We suggest that aberrant exosomal signalling by placental cells is a common aetiological factor in pregnancy complications characterised by incomplete SpA remodeling and is therefore a clinically relevant biomarker of pregnancy complications.Grace Truong, Dominic Guanzon, Vyjayanthi Kinhal, Omar Elfeky, Andrew Lai, Sherri Longo, Zarin Nuzhat, Carlos Palma, Katherin Scholz-Romero, Ramkumar Menon, Ben W. Inhibiting the oncogenic translation program is an effective therapeutic strategy in multiple myeloma
Published in final edited form as: Sci Transl Med. 2017 May 10; 9(389). https://doi.org/10.1126/scitranslmed.aal2668.Multiple myeloma (MM) is a frequently incurable hematological cancer in which overactivity of MYC plays a central role, notably through up-regulation of ribosome biogenesis and translation. To better understand the oncogenic program driven by MYC and investigate its potential as a therapeutic target, we screened a chemically diverse small-molecule library for anti-MM activity. The most potent hits identified were rocaglate scaffold inhibitors of translation initiation. Expression profiling of MM cells revealed reversion of the oncogenic MYC-driven transcriptional program by CMLD010509, the most promising rocaglate. Proteome-wide reversion correlated with selective depletion of short-lived proteins that are key to MM growth and survival, most notably MYC, MDM2, CCND1, MAF, and MCL-1. The efficacy of CMLD010509 in mouse models of MM confirmed the therapeutic relevance of these findings in vivo and supports the feasibility of targeting the oncogenic MYC-driven translation program in MM with rocaglates
Stable nondegenerate optical parametric oscillation at degenerate frequencies in Na:KTP
We report the realization of a light source specifically designed for the
generation of bright continuous-variable entangled beams and for
Heisenberg-limited inteferometry. The source is a nondegenerate, single-mode,
continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator in Na:KTP, operated at frequency
degeneracy and just above threshold, which is also of interest for the study of
critical fluctuations at the transition point. The residual
frequency-difference jitter is 150 kHz for a 3 MHz cold cavity half-width
at half maximum. We observe 4 dB of photon-number-difference squeezing at 200
kHz. The Na:KTP crystal is noncritically phase-matched for a 532 nm pump and
polarization crosstalk is therefore practically nonexistent
Diatomic molecules in ultracold Fermi gases - Novel composite bosons
We give a brief overview of recent studies of weakly bound homonuclear
molecules in ultracold two-component Fermi gases. It is emphasized that they
represent novel composite bosons, which exhibit features of Fermi statistics at
short intermolecular distances. In particular, Pauli exclusion principle for
identical fermionic atoms provides a strong suppression of collisional
relaxation of such molecules into deep bound states. We then analyze
heteronuclear molecules which are expected to be formed in mixtures of
different fermionic atoms. It is found how an increase in the mass ratio for
the constituent atoms changes the physics of collisional stability of such
molecules compared to the case of homonuclear ones. We discuss Bose-Einstein
condensation of these composite bosons and draw prospects for future studies.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Crystal Field and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Interaction in orbitally ordered La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3: An ESR Study
We present a comprehensive analysis of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and
crystal-field parameters using the angular dependence of the paramagnetic
resonance shift and linewidth in single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3
within the orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted phase. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya
interaction (~ 1K) results from the tilting of the MnO_6 octahedra against each
other. The crystal-field parameters D and E are found to be of comparable
magnitude (~ 1K) with D ~= -E. This indicates a strong mixing of the |3z^2-r^2>
and |x^2-y^2> states for the real orbital configuration.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Conductance statistics from a large array of sub-10 nm molecular junctions
Devices made of few molecules constitute the miniaturization limit that both
inorganic and organic-based electronics aspire to reach. However, integration
of millions of molecular junctions with less than 100 molecules each has been a
long technological challenge requiring well controlled nanometric electrodes.
Here we report molecular junctions fabricated on a large array of sub-10 nm
single crystal Au nanodots electrodes, a new approach that allows us to measure
the conductance of up to a million of junctions in a single conducting Atomic
Force Microscope (C-AFM) image. We observe two peaks of conductance for
alkylthiol molecules. Tunneling decay constant (beta) for alkanethiols, is in
the same range as previous studies. Energy position of molecular orbitals,
obtained by transient voltage spectroscopy, varies from peak to peak, in
correlation with conductance values.Comment: ACS Nano (in press
A vibration-insensitive optical cavity and absolute determination of its ultrahigh stability
We use the three-cornered-hat method to evaluate the absolute frequency
stabilities of three different ultrastable reference cavities, one of which has
a vibration-insensitive design that does not even require vibration isolation.
An Nd:YAG laser and a diode laser are implemented as light sources. We observe
Hz beat note linewidths between all three cavities. The measurement
demonstrates that the vibration-insensitive cavity has a good frequency
stability over the entire measurement time from 100 s to 200 s. An
absolute, correlation-removed Allan deviation of at 1 s of
this cavity is obtained, giving a frequency uncertainty of only 0.44 Hz.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
