Study of the Heavy Elements of the Al-Kharazi Water Course Inside the University of Mosul

    Get PDF
This study investigated the levels of heavy metal contaminants (copper, zinc, cadmium, and lead) in water samples collected from the Al-Kharazi watercourse traversing the University of Mosul campus over four seasons in 2022 and 2023. Water samples were taken from five stations along the watercourse and analyzed for dissolved and particulate phases of the heavy metals. The heavy metals have been extracted using a standard method and their concentrations in river water and sediments have been estimated using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed mean concentrations of 0.0527 ± 0.0131 mg/L for cadmium, 0.0178 ± 0.0051 mg/L for lead, 0.0145 ± 0.002 mg/L for dissolved copper, and 3.232 ± 0.635 mg/L for zinc across all seasons. Substantial discrepancies were noted among seasons and across various sampling sites. At specific sites and during certain seasons, the levels of cadmium and lead were discovered to surpass the drinking water guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The research shows that there is a significant amount of heavy metal pollution, particularly cadmium, in the Al-Kharazi watercourse. This contamination is most likely caused by human activities in the university area. It is advisable to regularly assess and apply solutions to mitigate the risks of heavy metal contamination to both the aquatic environment and human health

POTENSI WILAYAH PERKOTAAN POLISENTRIS PADA SURAKARTA RAYA DITINJAU DARI PERSPEKTIF PUSAT AKTIVITAS

    Get PDF

Transport of Aniline through Bulk Liquid Membrane with Transition Metal Ion As Receiving Phase

Aniline is a common carsinogenic chemical in industrial wastewater. Aniline above 2 mg/L may harm living organisms in the water that have been contaminated with aniline. The method that can be used is the bulk liquid membrane, which is currently effective in the recovery of aniline from the water. Aniline was transported initially the 4 x 10−5 M feed solution to the FeCl3 in the receiving phase is 90.17% in 90 minutes, feed phase at pH 6, stirring rate 180 rpm, and time equilibrium 15 minutes, while remaining at feed phase is 12.42%. The result from FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) characterization indicate the presence of aniline in receiving phase, absorption characteristic of C-N and N-H in IR spectrum in the stripping phase.     Keywords: Bulk liquid membrane, aniline, transport, UV-Vis spectrophotometr

Background and objectives: Little is known about the clinical profile and outcome of myasthenia gravis in Pakistan. The objective of this study is to review the clinical characteristics of patients with myasthenia gravis in Pakistan, and the outcome of investigations and treatment. Methods: The study comprised a retrospective review of charts of patients diagnosed with myasthenia gravis at Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, over a period of 16 years from 1987 to 2003. The following features were reviewed: (i) clinical presentation, (ii) investigations especially nerve conduction studies, acetylcholine receptor antibodies, and imaging studies of the thorax, (iii) treatments administered (including thymectomy). Data analysis was done using Excel sheets. Results:Of the 83 patients, 51(61.4%) were males, whereas 32 (38.6%) were females. The age range was from 12 to 81 years, mean age of 43.7 years (SD± 18.2). In the 60 years plus group, there were three times as many males as compared to females. Limb weakness was noted in 58 (69.9%), ocular symptoms in 57(68.7%), and oropharyngeal symptoms in 54(65.1%) patients. Three (3.6%) presented in a state of myasthenic crisis. Tensilon test was performed in 34 patients and was positive in 31(91.2%), repetitive nerve conduction studies (RNS) were performed in 37 patients and was positive in 26(70.3%), acetylcholine receptor antibodies were done in 60 patients, and were positive in 55(91.7%). Thymic enlargement was seen in 28 out of 43 patients who underwent CT-Scan/MRI studies of the thorax. Besides pyridostigmine, most patients received immunosuppressive therapy with either steroids or azathioprine or both. The thymectomy was performed in 44 patients. Conclusion:The general disease pattern of MG, as noted in our series, appears to follow a similar pattern as noted worldwide. However, this retrospective and hospital-based study has its limitations, and more prospective and epidemiological studies are needed

    Get PDF
The dynamics of the development of Islamic education curriculum needs to be paid important attention by education practitioners so that the determination of the policy is in accordance with the expected objectives. As a matter of fact, it is known that Islamic education in Indonesia does not yet go as expected because the outputs do not have competencies and personalities that are in accordance with the spirit of Islam. This study strives to develop an Islamic education curriculum by updating the formulation of educational goals. It is carried out by adapting the concept of the Insan Kamil in the Quran into the development of an Islamic education curriculum. Through library studies, it was obtained that the goal formulation of the Insan Kamil did not only cover the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects but also covered a strong spiritual realm. As a result, the formulation of the objectives is regarded as a solution to the development of Islamic education curriculum in resulting in faithful, pious, and noble people who are always ma'rifatullah
