DevOps adoption : challenges & barriers

    Get PDF
As a modern software engineering paradigm, DevOps has recently gained increasing acceptance in the industry as a set of practices and cultural values to address daily dynamic software demands. While the rising trend of DevOps and its characteristics and challenges have often been characterized by practitioner communities and academic research circles, there is still a lack of a thorough understanding of how to tackle DevOps adoptions. This paper aims to help fill this gap by identifying, discussing, and summarizing current academic and practitioner DevOps adoption & implementation research. Our findings provide a basis for theoretical, empirical, or design-oriented research for IS scholars, that has the potential to be of practical importance. Our goal is to improve understanding of DevOps adoption by uncovering ambiguities in terms, conceptual conflations, and ideas underlying different uses of the concept as well as providing methods to deal with common challenges in the adoption process

Perception and implementation of Zero Defect Manufacturing approach in foundries

Foundry is an industry that is both very old and very forward-looking. It is an essential base for several industrial sectors in today’s world. However, the metal casting industry faces a lot of challenges, including quality. There is a need for a converging system that orients all the resources towards meeting the quality requirements throughout the whole process. Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) is a concept that aims to meet this need by adopting the four strategies of Detection, Prevention, Prediction and Repair. In that context, ZDM has been a subject of several collaborations between industrial sectors and the scientific community given its importance to the industrial field. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research into the implementation of this concept in certain types of industries, such as foundries. This thesis aims to fill this gap by presenting a generic review and a better understanding of the implementation of the ZDM approach in foundries. A systematic literature study has been conducted and the result has been compared to the empirical data collected via interviews with managers working in the metal casting industry. It was found that the nine key enablers of ZDM implementation in foundries are 1) Sensors & embedded systems, 2) AI & DigitalTwins, 3) Advanced robotics, 4) Connectivity & mobility, 5) Cloud computing, 6) Edge computing, 7) Forecasting & Modelling, 8) Business Solutions, 9) Intelligence & control systems. Automation enhances ZDM in foundries by enabling continuous and consistent data collection throughout the whole process. Ensuring skilled labour in specific disciplines such as PLC programming and statistics is seen to be a major challenge for foundries. At the end of the thesis, propositions for future studies in the field of ZDM in foundries and the role of future technologies, such as metal 3D printing, are proposed.

Effective inventory management in the automotive industry, a literature study.

The automotive industry is characterized by the importance of its inventories and the diversity of these inventories. They are strategic key factors to ensure a short time to market. The effective management of such an important asset is vital to ensure the high competitiveness of car manufacturers. Stocks immobilize significant financial resources while generating additional costs at various levels too. The importance of cost-effective management of these costs for car manufacturers has made it a field of interest for many studies. Many cost control techniques and concepts have been proposed. Yet, the author of this thesis could not find articles or reviews that discuss the possible links between these tools and concepts. The aim of this thesis is therefore to explore and get a better understanding of the financial side of inventory management out of applied inventory management cost control techniques. This literature review is based on scientific articles which deal with the subject, and which are published in recognized scientific journals. The PRISMA method is used as a selection criterion for these articles, followed by an in-depth analysis of them. It draws special attention to the four key factors that contribute to cost-effective inventory management within the automotive industry (1) quantity, (2) predictability, (3) prioritization and (4) information. It discusses their impact on inventories and highlights the pros and cons of different tools mentioned in the studied papers. Forecasting is found to be the common element of all the tools. Propositions for further studies of interest to the subject are presented at the end. Keywords: Inventor

The purpose of this report is to describe the work that I have been doing during these past eight weeks as a Summer Student at CERN. The task which was assigned to me had to do with the integration of TMVA Output into Jupyter notebooks. In order to integrate the TMVA Output into the Jupyter notebook, first, improvement of the TMVA Output in the terminal was required. Once the output was improved, it needed to be transformed into HTML output and at the end it would be possible to integrate that output into the Jupyter notebook

Body" firstly became a significant research topic in sociology in the early 1980s. Highly popular films, in which "body" plays a considerable role, such as "Blade Runner", "Terminator", "Robocop", "Body Heat" in the same years; "Basic Instict", "Boxing Helena", "Matrix", "eXistenZ", "S1m0ne", "Silence of the Lambs","Se7en", "Fight Club" in the later years; and contemporary The Passion of the Christ" were shot. In the context of Consumer Society, there is a perfect correspondance between the "body" which is a topic in sociology and the "body" which has been presented in the cinema. Although there are qualitative differences in terms of both the cinematographic narration and the content between the films we're mentioning and similar ones, the most common point is that "body" which is a product of Consumer Society has been presented in different ways. Therefore, we have the opportunity to go through the historical data of "body" in the West, and as a result of this to compare the "body" that is related to Consumer Society and the "body" that is assumed as its ancestors. Since the topic being studied in this thesis is the "body" in the context of Consumer Society, we limit the research field to the western societies. The main reason for this is that the Consumer Society is a phenomenon inclusive to the Western societies. And the "body" that has been presented via cinema was created by the Consumer Society itself, so it has been in function and mediation of the Consumer Society. The diverse figural presentation of the "body" in the cinema does not vary this conclusion. Consequently, the "body" we're studying in the context of Consumer Society in the cinema is mostly being generated by the system and thus serves the interests of the system

THE UNITY OF THE ARTIST AND THE ARTIFACT: BEING AN ACTOR IN CINEMA

Acting is a very special and specific art form, be it in cinema or not it significantly differs from other art forms. First of all in the art of acting, created by the artist and thus the created work (artifact) represents a union. For example, a writer writes a novel, a composer composes music; painters do paintings, but only the actor is at the same time the creator and the result of his/hers own art. This feature of the actor not only determines the narrative expression it also determines the inner and private life of the actors. Though the existence of the actor is not a life, which is only consisted of his own, but also it is the life of others, there is a continuing public side in an actor's life. Most of the actor's lives are identified with the characters they play, and in certain cases the characters they play goes into a realm beyond the actors and take a shape a life form of its own in a sense it exchanges the place of the real character. Therefore, actors are inevitably forced to live a life of constant dilemma. Prior to anything else, it must be admitted that this is a psychological burden. This state of neither mind nor situation has to be considered by every director, and understood that to work with the actors is to work with a palette of rich hues, of emotionally high and low volumes and of highly sensitive and easily affected personas
