    On The Continuous Coverage Problem for a Swarm of UAVs

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to provide wireless network and remote surveillance coverage for disaster-affected areas. During such a situation, the UAVs need to return periodically to a charging station for recharging, due to their limited battery capacity. We study the problem of minimizing the number of UAVs required for a continuous coverage of a given area, given the recharging requirement. We prove that this problem is NP-complete. Due to its intractability, we study partitioning the coverage graph into cycles that start at the charging station. We first characterize the minimum number of UAVs to cover such a cycle based on the charging time, the traveling time, and the number of subareas to be covered by the cycle. Based on this analysis, we then develop an efficient algorithm, the cycles with limited energy algorithm. The straightforward method to continuously cover a given area is to split it into N subareas and cover it by N cycles using N additional UAVs. Our simulation results examine the importance of critical system parameters: the energy capacity of the UAVs, the number of subareas in the covered area, and the UAV charging and traveling times.We demonstrate that the cycles with limited energy algorithm requires 69%-94% fewer additional UAVs relative to the straightforward method, as the energy capacity of the UAVs is increased, and 67%-71% fewer additional UAVs, as the number of subareas is increased.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    The Relevance of Internal Control System on Money Laundering in Jordanian Islamic and Commercial Banks

    Purpose: This study seeks to determine whether internal control systems are important for preventing money laundering in Islamic and commercial banks in Jordan. It seeks to clarify the procedures and means for evaluating the internal control systems, identify the extent of their application, and determine their impact on reducing money laundering in banks.   Theoretical framework: Money laundering is a significant criminal activity that has serious economic and social impacts. Despite anti-money laundering legislation and emphasis on internal controls, money laundering remains a pervasive problem in the financial industry. Effective internal controls can help prevent errors, manipulation, and fraud that facilitate money laundering, thereby preventing crime and ensuring market competitiveness.   Design/methodology/approach: As part of the study, interviews were conducted using a qualitative methodology. It was essential that those selected for interviews work in a controlling position or department in banks. All facets of the internal control framework are covered in the interview questions.   Findings: Internal control has a positive impact on preventing money laundering in banks, and control activities are critical in preventing money laundering operations. The quality of information obtained and distributed by banks, along with channels for distributing information, are factors in improving a bank's ability to combat money laundering.   Research, Practical & Social implications: The study has practical and social implications in determining characteristics that affect the efficacy of anti-money laundering actions, which can aid in drastically reducing money laundering.   Originality/value: The study adds to what is already known about anti-money laundering initiatives and how well they work to stop money laundering in Islamic and Commercial banks. Its investigation of the effects of information and communication on developing effective internal control systems to prevent money laundering gives it originality and value. Additionally, it creates new opportunities for future study into how well internal control procedures work to lessen money laundering in various contexts and nations

    Poisoning emergency visits among children: a 3-year retrospective study in Qatar

    Background Poisoning in toddlers and infants is almost always unintentional due to their exploratory behavior, which is different from adults. The prevalence and background of childhood poisoning in Qatar is still unknown. The aim of this study is to explore the extent of childhood poisoning in Qatar and, specifically, to describe the frequency of poisoning as a cause of Accident & Emergency (A&E) admission, the demographic profile of affected patients, the circumstances leading to exposure, and the specific agents involved in poisoning among children under age 14 in our setting. Methods This study was a cross-sectional survey of children up to 14 years old utilizing retrospective data between October 2009 and October 2012. The data were collected from the childhood poisoning case registry and patient medical records at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit of all the Hamad Medical Corporation hospitals. Pharmacists reviewed all the handwritten medical records. Data written on the data collection form were transferred into excel and later into SPSS version 21. The data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages, and a chi-square test was used for categorical variables. Results Out of 1179 registered poisoning cases listed in the registry, only 794 cases (67.3 %) were usable and included in the final analysis. A&E admissions for unintentional poisoning for children accounted for 0.22 % of all A&E admissions from 2009 to 12. The majority of poisoning cases happened among children between 1 and 5 years old (n = 704, 59.7 %). Cases were more frequent among non-Qatari than Qatari children (39.4 % vs. 28.5 %). Most cases occurred in the living room (28.2 %) and typically took place in the afternoon (29.2 %). Analgesic and antipyretic medicines were the most common agents ingested by children (n = 194, 36.9 %), specifically paracetamol (n = 140, 26.6 %). Conclusions Cases of unintentional poisoning are higher among children aged 1 to 5 years, males and non-Qatari. Most cases occurred in the living room and typically took place in the afternoon. The most common type of poison ingested by children was medicines, i.e., analgesics and antipyretics, specifically paracetamol

    Exploring Media and Communication Students’ Perception of Egyptian Universities’ Use of Augmented Reality in Learning

    The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of media students in Egypt universities about using augmented reality (AR) technology in learning. To achieve this, the study adopted Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and utilized a survey questionnaire to collect data from students in seven universities across Egypt. The findings revealed that (i) the students had a positive perception about using AR in media and communication learning; (ii) many media students in Egypt were not fully aware of the various AR technology applications in media and communication education; (iii) the students identified several negative factors that may hinder their acceptance of AR technology as an instructional tool, such as poor connectivity, lack of free AR programs, and lack of training programs. Addressing these barriers could help promote the adoption of AR technology in media and communication learning among students in Egypt. The significance of the study lies in that it sheds light on the need for increased awareness and education of the potential benefits of using AR technology in media and communication learning

    The rely on internal combustion engines is gradually decreased with the recent evolution of electric vehicles (EVs) in the automotive industry. Electric motors are replacing the energy systems mainly to improve the powertrain's efficiency and ensure they are environmentally friendly. These novel powertrains are designed to operate solely on batteries or supercapacitors. For these types of EVs, the battery is charged using an alternating current supply in connection to the grid in the case of plug-in electric vehicles. Internal combustion engines are equally used for some hybrid vehicles. Charging of the battery can also be carried out via regenerative braking from the traction motor. This study presents a brief background about the different available EVs, detailed information on various power converter electronics used in battery electric vehicles, and a summary of the strengths (S), weaknesses (W), opportunities (O), and threats (T) of the EV is presented.     Placemaking from Interstitial Spaces: Participatory planning and collaborative community design as strategies to revitalize a service alleyway in Montreal (Bishop/Mackay)

    This project explores participatory planning and community design methodologies (i.e. pattern language design, placemaking, community planning charrettes, planning-in-situ, open planning and peer to peer urbanism) to revitalize a service alleyway in downtown Montreal. The objective of this project is to democratize planning and urban design practices and to engage ordinary citizens in the planning of their own spaces. After a series of visioning workshops, brainstorming sessions and a community planning charrette, this project incorporates inputs from stakeholders, students and ordinary citizens into a collaborative urban design project. The project proposes interventions such as a woonerf, a planning committee, a cubic/fractal scaffolding structure, art murals and wall projections (among others). With the objective of encouraging future adaptations and transformations, this project is published under a Creative Commons license.     Impact of opioid-free analgesia on pain severity and patient satisfaction after discharge from surgery: multispecialty, prospective cohort study in 25 countries

    Background: Balancing opioid stewardship and the need for adequate analgesia following discharge after surgery is challenging. This study aimed to compare the outcomes for patients discharged with opioid versus opioid-free analgesia after common surgical procedures.Methods: This international, multicentre, prospective cohort study collected data from patients undergoing common acute and elective general surgical, urological, gynaecological, and orthopaedic procedures. The primary outcomes were patient-reported time in severe pain measured on a numerical analogue scale from 0 to 100% and patient-reported satisfaction with pain relief during the first week following discharge. Data were collected by in-hospital chart review and patient telephone interview 1 week after discharge.Results: The study recruited 4273 patients from 144 centres in 25 countries; 1311 patients (30.7%) were prescribed opioid analgesia at discharge. Patients reported being in severe pain for 10 (i.q.r. 1-30)% of the first week after discharge and rated satisfaction with analgesia as 90 (i.q.r. 80-100) of 100. After adjustment for confounders, opioid analgesia on discharge was independently associated with increased pain severity (risk ratio 1.52, 95% c.i. 1.31 to 1.76; P < 0.001) and re-presentation to healthcare providers owing to side-effects of medication (OR 2.38, 95% c.i. 1.36 to 4.17; P = 0.004), but not with satisfaction with analgesia (beta coefficient 0.92, 95% c.i. -1.52 to 3.36; P = 0.468) compared with opioid-free analgesia. Although opioid prescribing varied greatly between high-income and low- and middle-income countries, patient-reported outcomes did not.Conclusion: Opioid analgesia prescription on surgical discharge is associated with a higher risk of re-presentation owing to side-effects of medication and increased patient-reported pain, but not with changes in patient-reported satisfaction.
