Human capital and regional growth in Finland

Recent investigations of regional growth have paid a great attention to convergence of per-capita income. These studies have shown the human capital to be a significant factor in addition to labour force, capital and technical progress when explaining the economic growth. This paper examines the convergence, and in particular the impact of human capital on regional growth in Finland. We estimate a standard neoclassical growth model extended by a human capital accumulation. The regional growth for many sectors of the finnish economy is analysed on the basis of data consisting of 12 provinces during the period 1960-1995 and 88 subregions during the period 1988-1995. The human capital is measured by the education level of the labour force with three categories and, moreover, it is constructed a regional indicator of the educational level.

SENSITIVITY OF GROSS STATE PRODUCT TO CYCLICAL AND STRUCTURAL CHANGE

The sensitivity of regional industry to business cycles has been widely documented. Responses of individual businesses and industries in a specific region or state to each phase of the business cycle has been less well analyzed and understood. Lacking in all the documentation, moreover, is reference to the impact of business cycles on interregional trade and regional interindustry structure and to the separation of these impacts from those due to business activity location and dislocation. To deal with these limitations, state-level location quotient and shift-share analyses of year-to-year changes in industry-specific contribution to gross state product are used in differentiating the varying degrees of cyclical sensitivity among industries and regions and then, in later studies, to account for these differences in parallel analyses of the structure of inter-regional trade and interindustry transactions among selected groups of states. A micro-to-macro analytical framework is offered, finally, for testing working hypotheses pertaining to the sensitivity of businesses, industries and regions to the business cycle and to structural dislocation.Community/Rural/Urban Development,

Laajat intervallihypyt osana melodista jazzimprovisointia

Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on esitellä laajojen intervallihyppyjen esiintyvyyttä solistisessa jazzimprovisoinnissa. Tarkoituksenani on havainnollistaa, että laajoilla intervallihypyillä ei ole merkittävää roolia traditionaalisessa jazzimprovisoinnissa ja käsitellä siihen liittyviä syitä. Esitän työssäni, että laajojen intervallihyppyjen vähäinen rooli traditionaalisessa jazzimprovisoinnissa heijastuu myös tämän päivän jazzmusiikissa siten, että laajat intervallihypyt jäävät helposti pienempään rooliin kuin olisi melodisen monipuolisuuden ja yllätyksellisyyden kannalta suotavaa. Lisäksi osoitan syitä, miksi jazzmusiikkia soittavien muusikoiden olisi perusteltua käyttää monipuolisesti laajoja intervallihyppyjä improvisoinnissaan. Tarkastelen tutkielmassani laajojen intervallihyppyjen käyttöä rajoittavia tekijöitä jazzimprovisoinnissa. Havainnollistan teoreettisten laskutoimituksien avulla laajojen intervallihyppyjen vähäisen ja runsaan käytön välisiä eroja. Analysoin lisäksi kirjasta Jazzology otettuja melodiaesimerkkejä sekä Scott Kinseyn improvisoitua sooloa kappaleessa Essaouira. Näitä lähteitä vertailemalla pyrin osoittamaan eroja tavanomaisen ja monipuolisen laajojen intervallihyppyjen käytön välillä. Työn pääpaino on kuitenkin ilmiön esittämisessä ja omissa pohdinnoissani, joiden avulla toivon kannustavani improvisoivaa tai säveltävää lukijaa pohtimaan laajojen intervallihyppyjen roolia omassa musiikissaan.The purpose of this study is to discuss the incidence of wide interval leaps in solo jazz improvisation. My aim is to show that wide interval leaps do not play a significant role in traditional jazz improvisation. I will also provide explanations to why this is the case. I propose that this lack of significance is reflected on contemporary jazz music, resulting in fewer wide interval leaps than one would hope for in terms of versatility and predictability. In addition, I will clarify why jazz musicians should use an expanded range of wide interval leaps when improvising. In my thesis, I discuss the factors restricting the use of wide interval leaps in jazz improvisation. I present theoretical calculations to demonstrate differences between narrow and extensive occurrence of wide interval leaps. In addition, I analyze examples of melodies presented in the book Jazzology as well as improvised solo by Scott Kinsey. By comparing these sources I illustrate differences between regular and varied use of wide interval leaps. The main focus of the study, however, is on exploring the phenomenon and on my discussion that I hope will encourage the reader who improvises or conducts music to consider the role of wide interval leaps in his/her own music

Experiences in Bayesian Inference in Baltic Salmon Management

We review a success story regarding Bayesian inference in fisheries management in the Baltic Sea. The management of salmon fisheries is currently based on the results of a complex Bayesian population dynamic model, and managers and stakeholders use the probabilities in their discussions. We also discuss the technical and human challenges in using Bayesian modeling to give practical advice to the public and to government officials and suggest future areas in which it can be applied. In particular, large databases in fisheries science offer flexible ways to use hierarchical models to learn the population dynamics parameters for those by-catch species that do not have similar large stock-specific data sets like those that exist for many target species. Software testing is a crucial part of modern software development and it is commonly accepted fact that the earlier software defects and errors are found, the lower the cost of correcting those will be. Early detection of errors also increases the possibility to correct them properly. Acceptance testing is a process of comparing the developed program to the initial requirements. Acceptance testing of a system should be executed in an environment as similar as possible to the production environment of the final product. This master's thesis will discuss how to address these in automated acceptance testing environment of payment terminal software. This master's thesis will discuss the theories related to software testing, testing of embedded systems and the challenges related to the topic.
