Stress Analysis of a Stepped-Lap Bonded Repair Joint in Composite Laminate under Compressive Loading
With increasing the usage of advanced composite materials in aircraft structures, it is required to have a suitable repair technology for composite airframe. One of the primary requisites of the repair in such structures is that the repaired surface should not affect the aerodynamic contour. Adhesively bonded repair joints are generally preferred over mechanically fastened repair joints to avoid the stress concentration and achieve smooth aerodynamic surface. Significant numbers of research works have been carried on interface stress distributions for lap, butt and scarf adhesive repaired joints under the static tensile loading. However, the behavior of stepped-lap adhesive joints under compressive loading has not been fully understood and there are not many literatures available on this subject. The present work focuses on stress analysis of a laminate that is repaired through a stepped-lap joint repair scheme. The stress analysis has been carried out and stress distributions in the laminate, patch and adhesive were studied. In order to establish and validate the FE approach for analysis of stepped-lap repair joint subjected to compression, an experimental study also has been carried out. The strains from the analysis have been compared with the strains obtained from the test at important locations. Both the results have shown good agreement
Fermi Velocity Spectrum and Incipient Magnetism in TiBe2
We address the origin of the incipient magnetism in TiBe through precise
first principles calculations, which overestimate the ferromagnetic tendency
and therefore require correction to account for spin fluctuations. TiBe has
sharp fine structure in its electronic density of states, with a van Hove
singularity only 3 meV above the Fermi level. Similarly to the isovalent weak
ferromagnet ZrZn, it is flat bands along the K-W-U lines of hexagonal face
of the fcc Brillouin zone make the system prone to magnetism, and more so if
electrons are added. We find that the Moriya coefficient (multiplying
in the fluctuation susceptibility )
is divergent when the velocity vanishes at a point on the Fermi surface, which
is very close (3 meV) to occurring in TiBe. In exploring how the FM
instability (the =0 Stoner enhancement is ) might be suppressed
by fluctuations in TiBe, we calculate that the Moriya A coefficient (of
) is negative, so =0 is not the primary instability. Explicit
calculation of shows that its maximum occurs at the X point
; TiBe is thus an incipient {\it anti}ferromagnet
rather than ferromagnet as has been supposed. We further show that simple
temperature smearing of the peak accounts for most of the temperature
dependence of the susceptibility, which previously had been attributed to local
moments (via a Curie-Weiss fit), and that energy dependence of the density of
states also strongly affects the magnetic field variation of

SummaryCachexia contributes to nearly a third of all cancer deaths, yet the mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle wasting in this syndrome remain poorly defined. We report that tumor-induced alterations in the muscular dystrophy-associated dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) represent a key early event in cachexia. Muscles from tumor-bearing mice exhibited membrane abnormalities accompanied by reduced levels of dystrophin and increased glycosylation on DGC proteins. Wasting was accentuated in tumor mdx mice lacking a DGC but spared in dystrophin transgenic mice that blocked induction of muscle E3 ubiquitin ligases. Furthermore, DGC deregulation correlated positively with cachexia in patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Based on these results, we propose that, similar to muscular dystrophy, DGC dysfunction plays a critical role in cancer-induced wasting

Closing the sea surface mixed layer temperature budget from in situ observations alone: Operation Advection during BoBBLE
Sea surface temperature (SST) is a fundamental driver of tropical weather systems such as monsoon rainfall and tropical cyclones. However, understanding of the factors that control SST variability is lacking, especially during the monsoons when in situ observations are sparse. Here we use a ground-breaking observational approach to determine the controls on the SST variability in the southern Bay of Bengal. We achieve this through the first full closure of the ocean mixed layer energy budget derived entirely from in situ observations during the Bay of Bengal Boundary Layer Experiment (BoBBLE). Locally measured horizontal advection and entrainment contribute more significantly than expected to SST evolution and thus oceanic variability during the observation period. These processes are poorly resolved by state-of-the-art climate models, which may contribute to poor representation of monsoon rainfall variability. The novel techniques presented here provide a blueprint for future observational experiments to quantify the mixed layer heat budget on longer time scales and to evaluate these processes in models

Missed opportunities for diagnosing brain tumours in primary care: a qualitative study of patient experiences.
BACKGROUND: Brain tumours are uncommon, and have extremely poor outcomes. Patients and GPs may find it difficult to recognise early symptoms because they are often non-specific and more likely due to other conditions. AIM: To explore patients' experiences of symptom appraisal, help seeking, and routes to diagnosis. DESIGN AND SETTING: Qualitative study set in the East and North West of England. METHOD: In-depth interviews with adult patients recently diagnosed with a primary brain tumour and their family members were analysed thematically, using the Model of Pathways to Treatment as a conceptual framework. RESULTS: Interviews were carried out with 39 patients. Few participants (n = 7; 18%) presented as an emergency without having had a previous GP consultation; most had had one (n = 15; 38%), two (n = 9; 23%), or more (n = 8; 21%) GP consultations. Participants experienced multiple subtle 'changes' rather than 'symptoms', often noticed by others rather than the patient, which frequently led to loss of interest or less ability to engage with daily living activities. The most common changes were in cognition (speaking, writing, comprehension, memory, concentration, and multitasking), sleep, and other 'head feelings' such as dizziness. Not all patients experienced a seizure, and few seizures were experienced 'out of the blue'. Quality of communication in GP consultations played a key role in patients' subsequent symptom appraisal and the timing of their decision to re-consult. CONCLUSION: Multiple subtle changes and frequent GP visits often precede brain tumour diagnosis, giving possible diagnostic opportunities for GPs. Refined community symptom awareness and GP guidance could enable more direct pathways to diagnosis, and potentially improve patient experiences and outcomes

aqueous electrolyte containing CuCl2, GaCl3 and H2SeO3.
The pH of the solution was adjusted to 2.3 by adding HCl
and KOH. Annealing improved crystallinity of CuGaSe2 and
further annealing in sulphur atmosphere was required to obtain CuGaS2 layers. The morphology, topography, chemical
composition and crystal structure of the deposited thin films
were analysed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force
microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. X-Ray diffraction showed that the asdeposited CuGaSe2 film exhibited poor crystallinity, but
which improved dramatically when the layers were annealed
in forming gas atmosphere for 40 min. Subsequent
sulphurization of CuGaSe2 films was performed at 400 °C
for 10 min in presence of molecular sulphur and under
forming gas atmosphere. The effect of sulphurization was
the conversion of CuGaSe2 into CuGaS2. The formation of
CuGaS2 thin films was evidenced by the shift observed in the
X-ray diffraction pattern and by the blue shift of the optical
bandgap. The bandgap of CuGaSe2 was found to be 1.66 eV,
while for CuGaS2 it raised up to 2.2 eV. A broad intermediate
absorption band associated to Cr and centred at 1.63 eV was
