    Growth Inhibition of Various Pathogenic Microorganisms Using Effective Microorganisms (EM)

    In recent years, researchers focus on treatment of wastewater using low-cost treatment processes. Several studies showed that using effective microorganisms (EM) is a promising technology in the treatment of wastewater. However, the treatment mechanism using EM is not clear. In this study, the effect of EM towards several pathogenic microorganisms was investigated to examine its ability to inhibit their growth. The results showed that EM has the ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus faecalis; while no effect was detected on fungi that were examined.  &nbsp

    Upgrading Conventional Activated Sludge System Using Bio-media: A Case Study of Zenin Wastewater Treatment Plant, Egypt

    This study investigated the ability to upgrade the biological treatment system in Zenin wastewater treatment plant, in Egypt. This investigation was conducted through the comparison of three different biological treatment systems: activated sludge process (AS), moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), and integrated fixed film activated sludge system (IFAS). Three pilot systems were established at Zenin wastewater treatment plant, to simulate AS, MBBR, and IFAS systems, to show the effect of various parameters on the removal efficiencies of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N). Different values of hydraulic retention time, different amounts of returned sludge, and concentration of dissolved oxygen, were examined. The maximum removal efficiencies of BOD5, TSS, and NH4-N were 50%, 81.9%, and 82% in activated sludge system, respectively; 80%, 81.8%, and 99.3% in MBBR system, respectively; and 62.3%, 86.2%, and 76% in IFAS system, respectively.     Clinical significance and treatment of striae gravidarum during pregnancy: a review article

    Abdominal stretch marks found during pregnancy may be indicative of poor skin elasticity. One who does not have stretch marks may have better skin elasticity and may be less likely to tear perineal and vaginal tissue during vaginal delivery. Striae gravidarum (SG) is a common phenomenon of stretch marks observed during pregnancy that may be an indicator of poor skin elasticity. The type and amount of collagen in connective tissue are considered to determine the individual’s elastic index. The skin surface is made up of a complex network of crossing thin lines. The two-dimensional relationship between primary and secondary lines determines the skin texture and its grade of irregularity. SG is caused by changes in the structural connective tissue due to a hormonal elect on the alignment and reduced elastin and fibrillin in the dermis. Severity scoring of SG was observed using the numerical scoring system of Atwal. This score provides a rank based on observation of four areas in which SG is most commonly observed (abdomen, hips, buttocks, and breast)

    Model-based Automatic Segmentation of Ascending Aorta from Multimodality Medical Data

    Automatic Ascending Aorta Segmentation is one of the important steps towards automatic segmentation of the whole cardiac tree. This paper presents a novel approach for the automatic segmentation of the ascending aorta from two imaging modalities: CTA (Computed Tomography Angiography) and PC-MRI (Phase-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Images). The novel approach is an algorithm that works without the need for setting manual seed points or applying preprocessing steps or setting a region of interest. Instead, the proposed algorithm automatically detects and segments the ascending aorta using an ascending aorta model built from its anatomical features. The proposed segmentation algorithm begins with aorta detection through features model fitting augmented with Hough transform, where the ascending aorta is identified from the descending aorta and any other circular structures based on the proposed model. After detection, the whole ascending aorta is segmented up from the aortic arch down to the ostia points using a novel automatic seeded region growing algorithm. The proposed algorithm is fully automatic, works in real-time and robust as parameters used are the same for all the tested datasets. The detection and segmentation of the ascending aorta succeeded in all test cases acquired from the two imaging modalities; proving the robustness of the proposed ascending aorta model and algorithm for the automatic segmentation process even on data from different modalities and different scanner types. The accuracy of the segmentation has a mean Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 94.72% for CTA datasets and 97.13% for PC-MRI datasets

    Effect of genistein and oestradiol on the adrenal cortex of the ovariectomised adult female albino rats

    Background: Genistein, a naturally occurring soy isoflavone, attracts interest as an effective and safe alternative to hormone replacement therapy for menopausal problems. The aim of the current study was to compare between the effect of genistein and oestradiol on the adrenal cortex of the ovariectomised adult female albino rats. Materials and methods: Twenty rats were used in the current study and divided into four groups, 5 rats in each group; group 1 (control non-ovariectomised), group 2 (ovariectomised), group 3 (ovariectomised + genistein) and group 4 (ovariectomised + oestradiol). The rats were sacrificed after 4 weeks. Both adrenal glands were removed for light microscope using haematoxylin and eosin stain, ultrastructural study and immunohistochemical examination using proliferating cell nuclear antigen, caspase-3, and oestrogen receptor-b. Results: Ovariectomised rats showed signs of degeneration in all zones of adrenal cortex. On the other hand, treatment with genistein showed restoration of the adrenal cortex with less proliferative effect than oestradiol. Conclusions: So, genistein can be used as effective therapy to decrease the symptoms of menopause without fear of cancer development

    Sexual behaviour of pregnant women attending antenatal care clinic at Assiut Women's Health Hospital, Egypt

    Background: The aim of the current study was to describe the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behavior of pregnant women regarding sexuality during pregnancy. Study was carried out at Women’s Health Hospital, Assiut University, Egypt.Methods: A cross-sectional study included pregnant women at different gestational ages between December 2016 and Jun 2017 recruited consecutively at the antenatal outpatient clinic of women’s Health Hospital at Assiut University. We used the Arabic version of the Female Sexual Function Index (Ar-FSFI) in the interview to evaluate the sexual functions or problems during the last month. The cut-off score used to indicate sexual dysfunction was 28.1. The obtained data were analyzed by means of SPSS software (version 22.0) and p<0.05 was taken as the significant level.Results: The study included 140 pregnant women at different ages and trimesters and also at different socio-economic states. Concerning the level of knowledge, the classification in recorded a mean score =11.91±4.05 which revealed a level of knowledge below average. Regarding the extent of beliefs in relation to sexuality during pregnancy, the mean score=2.72 of the respondents’ beliefs means that the impact of the beliefs regarding sexuality during pregnancy was weak among respondents. On assessing their perceptions about sexual intercourse during pregnancy, majority of them [130 (93.1%)] felt that sex have no negative impacts on pregnancy while 10 (6.9%) opined that sex during pregnancy had negative effects. Perceived negative effects of sex during pregnancy included vaginal bleeding and miscarriage.Conclusions: The low rate of sexual activity in our study, regardless question about the taboo of sexual intercourse during pregnancy, could be related to a cultural background in which women avoid speaking about their desires and sexual needs

    Design and simulation of seawater thermal desalination plants

    Water is the most important chemical component on Earth. Seawater distillation processes have a considerable promise as a technique suitable for producing large scale quantities of potable water from the seawater. Distillation process flowsheets consist of a number of interconnected units. The development of the mathematical model describing the behaviour of these units, and the subsequent solution of this model are fundamental steps in process flowsheeting. The first objective of this work is to develop a specialized flowsheeting program for performing design and simulation calculations for different types and configurations of seawater distillation processes. Many numerical methods have been used for solving linear and nonlinear sets of equations representing distillation processes. Most of these methods involve the direct manipulation of the mathematical model equations without exploiting the special properties, such as the sparsity and the weak nonlinearities, of these equations. The second aim of this study is to develop a new approach taking advantages of these properties. Hence, the model equations can be linearized, and grouped according to the variable type. These groups can then be solved by linear matrix technique. The performance of the developed program is investigated by solving many distillation process problems. The results from design and simulation calculations for large practical desalination plants are discussed. In addition to that the convergence characteristics of the new approach (such as stability. number of iterations. computing time. sensitivity to starting values, and general ease of use) are presented. Also. the validity of the approximation assumptions proposed to develop the new approach is examined

    The present work studies the resistant of the concrete against magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) and compare the results with values obtained previously of the same concretes exposed to sodium sulfate (Na2SO4). Thus, it is possible analyze the influence of the cation type. To that end, four different concrete mixes were made with sulfur resistant cement and mineral admixtures (silica fume, fly ash and blast furnace slag). The concretes were submerged for different period in magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). After that, different tests were carried out to define mechanical and microstructural properties. The results obtained were compared with reference values of concretes cured in calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. According to the results, the concrete with blast furnace slag presented the best behavior front MgSO4, meanwhile the concretes with silica fume and fly ash were the most susceptible. The resistance of the concrete with blast furnace slag could be attributed to the characteristics of the hydrated silicates formed during the hydration time, which include aluminum in the chemical chain that hinder its chemical decomposition during the attack of magnesium. The magnesium sulfate solution was most aggressive than sodium sulfate solution. El presente trabajo estudia la resistencia de hormigones al ataque de sulfatos provenientes de sulfato magnésico (MgSO4) y compara estos valores con resultados previos de los mismos hormigones atacados con sulfato sódico (Na2SO4). De esta manera se estudia la interacción del catión que acompaña al ion sulfato durante su afectación a la matriz cementicia. Para lo anterior, se diseñaron cuatro dosificaciones empleando cementos sulforresistentes y adiciones minerales (humo de sílice, ceniza volante y escoria de alto horno). Los hormigones se sumergieron, por distintos periodos de tiempo, en disolución de sulfato magnésico (MgSO4) de concentración 1M, para después realizarles ensayos mecánicos y a nivel microestructural. Los valores obtenidos se compararon con los obtenidos en el hormigón de referencia curado en hidróxido cálcico. El hormigón con escoria de alto horno presentó el mejor comportamiento frente a MgSO4, siendo las mezclas de humo de sílice y ceniza volante las más susceptibles. La resistencia del hormigón con escoria se atribuye a las características de los silicatos hidratados formados durante la hidratación, los cuales incorporan aluminio en las cadenas impidiendo su descomposición ante un ataque por magnesio. El medio con sulfato magnésico mostro una mayor agresividad que el medio con sulfato sódico

    A Comparative Study on Developing the Hybrid-Electric Vehicle ‎Systems and its Future Expectation over the Conventional Engines Cars

    The use of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) as an alternative to traditional petroleum-powered cars has risen due to climate change, air pollution, and fuel depletion. The transportation sector is the second largest energy-consuming sector that accounts for 30% of the world’s total delivered energy and about 60% of world oil demand. In 2008, the transportation sector accounted for about 22% of total world CO2 emissions. Within this sector, road vehicles dominate oil consumption and represent 81% of total transportation energy demand. This review discusses opportunities to reduce energy consumed and greenhouse gases in this sector and briefly discusses the Hybrid electric vehicles as a solution to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Also, the Classification of Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and the General architectures of hybrid electric vehicles and their subtypes have been discussed. Hybrid electric vehicle system components, system analysis, and fuel economy benefits are also explained. As the comparison results proved that the benefits of improved engine thermal efficiency outweigh the losses caused by longer energy transmission paths and showed that hybridization can improve fuel economy by about 24% in typical urban cycles. This study offers a thorough analysis of hybrid electric vehicles, including information on the designs, and energy management systems, created by different researchers. According to the thorough analysis, the current systems can execute HEVs rather effectively, but their dependability and autonomous systems remain not satisfactory. Several variables, difficulties, and issues related to the future generation of hybrid cars have been highlighted in this research
