Prolonged dexamethasone exposure enhances zebrafish lateral-line regeneration but disrupts mitochondrial homeostasis and hair cell function

The synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone is commonly used to treat inner ear disorders. Previous work in larval zebrafish has shown that dexamethasone treatment enhances hair cell regeneration, yet dexamethasone has also been shown to inhibit regeneration of peripheral nerves after lesion. We therefore used the zebrafish model to determine the impact of dexamethasone treatment on lateral-line hair cells and primary afferents. To explore dexamethasone in the context of regeneration, we used copper sulfate (CuS

Lateral line ablation by ototoxic compounds results in distinct rheotaxis profiles in larval zebrafish

The zebrafish lateral line is an established model for hair cell organ damage, yet few studies link mechanistic disruptions to changes in biologically relevant behavior. We used larval zebrafish to determine how damage via ototoxic compounds impact rheotaxis. Larvae were treated with CuS

2017 update of the WSES guidelines for emergency repair of complicated abdominal wall hernias

Emergency repair of complicated abdominal wall hernias may be associated with worsen outcome and a significant rate of postoperative complications. There is no consensus on management of complicated abdominal hernias. The main matter of debate is about the use of mesh in case of intestinal resection and the type of mesh to be used. Wound infection is the most common complication encountered and represents an immense burden especially in the presence of a mesh. The recurrence rate is an important topic that influences the final outcome. A World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) Consensus Conference was held in Bergamo in July 2013 with the aim to define recommendations for emergency repair of abdominal wall hernias in adults. This document represents the executive summary of the consensus conference approved by a WSES expert panel. In 2016, the guidelines have been revised and updated according to the most recent available literature.Peer reviewe

Come Play With Me: A 0-3 Play Curriculum for Low-Income Families

    No full text
Research indicates play is the developmentally appropriate way for young children to learn. Research also shows that socioeconomic status impacts child development, parental awareness of developmental milestones, and parent-child interaction. Published materials about play are often designed for middle class and wealthy families and are inappropriate or inaccessible for low-income families. In order to effectively work with low-income families, early intervention providers must understand the impact of socioeconomic status. Come PLAY With Me is designed to educate early intervention providers about working with low-income families and to educate low-income families about the importance of play in children\u27s lives. This information will enable service providers to provide appropriate education to low-income families and enable families to encourage their child\u27s play and learning

Los dilemas del sexo: (A-) Sexuación, (In-) Diferencia, (Des-) Igualdad

    No full text
