    We have surveyed an optical/IR selected sample of nearby E/S0 galaxies with and without nuclear dust structures with the VLA at 3.6 cm to a sensitivity of 100 μ\muJy. We can construct a Radio Luminosity Function (RLF) of these galaxies to ~10^19 W/Hz and find that ~50% of these galaxies have AGNs at this level. The space density of these AGNs equals that of starburst galaxies at this luminosity. Several dust-free galaxies have low luminosity radio cores, and their RLF is not significantly less than that of the dusty galaxies.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Burnout and the Reading Teacher

    It\u27s the end of the school day on Friday and most of the teachers are congregating in the lounge and classrooms, happily anticipating the weekend. Carole, however, walks straight to the parking lot without pausing to speak to colleagues as she did in former years. Today she informed the principal that she would not be renewing her contract as a remedial reading teacher and, although saddened by her decision, she also feels relief that months of increasing frustration and self-doubt have reached a conclusion. Part of the tragedy of this hypothetical but all too familiar example of Carole is her feeling of isolation in dealing with the stress and depression culminating in burnout generated by her work as a remedial reading teacher. Ironically, her high levels of enthusiasm and success in her preservice education program and the excitement of her initial teaching experience did little to prepare Carole for the inevitable frustrations and disappointments in remedial teaching over which she had little or no control. Although a certain amount of stress and other burnout-inducing factors are present in any teaching situation, the authors of this article propose that the realities of certain professionals, such as reading teachers, magnify stress to levels that require explicit acknowledgement and preparation on a collective, profession-wide basis

    1. The body and texture of ice cream are improved by the replacement of dry skimmilk by sodium caseinate sols. This improvement was shown up to 2.5 to 5.0 percent replacement, depending on the composition of the mix. 2. The flavor of ice cream was progressively improved by the replacement of dry skimmilk by sodium caseinate sols up to 3 to 4 percent replacement, depending on the composition of the mix. 3. This flavor improvement was due to the careful pH control used in the preparation of the sodium caseinate sols. 4. The type of melting of the ice cream was altered by the replacement of dry skimmilk by sodium caseinate sols. 5. The use of sodium caseinate sols increased the initial and maximum overrun and decreased the whipping time of the ice creams produced. 6. The curves for whipping time show that from 1.5 to 3.0 percent replacement of dry skimmilk by the sodium caseinate sols is necessary to effect sufficient improvement in whip to warrant their use. A 3 percent replacement would be necessary with a mix containing 14 percent fat and 10 percent serum solids. 7. The use of sodium caseinate preparations as additional solids, i.e., in addition to the amounts of serum solids (8 to 10 percent) commonly used by the trade, has been suggested. The amounts of milk protein that would be required to yield sufficient improvement in whip and in body and texture score would, in the light of the figures presented, be large enough to make their use questionable

    A total of 6,203 striped bass were tagged in fall 1989 and 2,033 in spring 1990 on the Rappahannock River. In fall 1989, 63.5% of the tagged striped bass were less than 400 mm fork length (FL). In comparison, 86% of the fish were greater than 400 mm FL in spring 1990. Pound nets in the Rappahannock River account for 75% of the recaptures, while out of state recaptures account for only 0. 008% of the total returns

    A total of 1,903 striped bass were tagged in fall 1990 and 2,708 in spring 1991 on the Rappahannock River. A total of 2,405 striped bass were tagged in fall 1991 on the James River. In fall 1990, 47.2% of the striped bass tagged on the Rappahannock were less than 425 mm fork length (FL). In comparison, only 13.9% of the fish were less than 425 mm FL in spring 1991. Pound nets in the Rappahannock River accounted for 66.3% of the recaptures, while out of state recaptures accounted for only 2.65% of the total returns. In the fall 1990, the mean fork length of striped bass tagged and released in the James River that were captured by haul seines and fyke nets were 44 7 mm and 449 mm, respectively

    Influence of substrate miscut angle on surface morphology and luminescence properties of AlGaN

    The influence of substrate miscut on Al0.5Ga0.5 N layers was investigated using cathodoluminescence (CL) hyperspectral imaging and secondary electron imaging in an environmental scanning electron microscope. The samples were also characterized using atomic force microscopy and high resolution X-ray diffraction. It was found that small changes in substrate miscut have a strong influence on the morphology and luminescence properties of the AlGaN layers. Two different types are resolved. For low miscut angle, a crack-free morphology consisting of randomly sized domains is observed, between which there are notable shifts in the AlGaN near band edge emission energy. For high miscut angle, a morphology with step bunches and compositional inhomogeneities along the step bunches, evidenced by an additional CL peak along the step bunches, are observed
