Since the Woolf Report of 1996, which led to the wholesale reform of the civil justice system in the late 1990s, mediation has had an important role to play in the UK legal framework of dispute resolution. The landscape of civil justice since the attendant legal aid reforms of the late 1990s and continuing into the early part of the millennium, as well as increased court fees have arguably had an adverse impact on access to justice through court-based solutions. This has in turn placed alternative dispute resolution and particularly mediation in the spotlight. Yet for the majority of civil legal disputes, mediation is still arguably under-used and undervalued as a process of dispute resolution. This study develops the research undertaken into the views and attitudes to mediation of legal practitioners practising in Canterbury, Kent and addresses the associated questions regionally. The report begins with a literature review of important research in this field and then goes on to analyse the responses of a number of legal practitioners who were interviewed for this study from the wider Kent region, practising in both the family and commercial law sectors. The participant responses demonstrate legal practitioners’ views on the perceived advantages and disadvantages of mediation and of the use mediation as an alternative dispute resolution process. Although there were some differences, the findings broadly matched those of the study conducted locally in Canterbury. Overall, the findings of this study reveal that legal practitioners view mediation positively, although there were various concerns about the particular circumstances where mediation would be considered inappropriate

Abstract   Supervision is assistance given to all teachers/school staff to develop schools to the fullest. Meanwhile, what is meant by supervision here is not an inspection from a person who thinks he knows everything (superior) to someone who is considered not knowing anything at all (inferior). However, academic supervision is in the form of guidance, coaching and assistance provided to teachers/educators to develop teaching and learning situations to make them better. So that teachers always make improvements in terms of the way they teach a subject and increase the effectiveness of their work which ultimately improves the quality of education in the school. From the implementation of the actions carried out using the supervision of the guidance model class and the time lag, satisfactory results can be obtained. This can be seen from the increase in the percentage of PTKp success indicators. Class supervision has a positive impact on the level of teacher discipline, teacher preparation in preparing and using learning tools that automatically makes supervised teachers use learning innovations with unconventional learning methods/models.

Abstract   Monitoring as an approach technique in developing teacher learning is a pattern based on the basic assumption that the teacher's learning process to develop in his position cannot be separated from the learning process carried out by the teacher. Learning is individual, therefore, the socialization process must be carried out by helping teachers face to face and individually. Monitoring as a technique has certain steps that need attention to develop the professionalism of the madrasa head and teachers. The madrasa supervisor who serves as a supervisor only has to manage and allocate programmed time between the madrasa supervisor as a supervisor and the teacher as a person who needs guidance. This activity will actually have a significant impact on both parties. Teachers feel helped by the guidance of the madrasa supervisor, while the madrasa supervisor will benefit in the form of improving the quality of learning that exists for each madrasa head and teacher.

We construct new 1/2 supersymmetric solutions in D=3, N=2, matter coupled, U(1) gauged supergravities and study some of their properties. We do this by employing a quite general supersymmetry breaking condition, from which we also redrive some of the already known solutions. Among the new solutions, we have an explicit non-topological soliton for the non-compact sigma model, a locally flat solution for the compact sigma model and a string-like solution for both types of sigma models. The last one is smooth for the compact scalar manifold.Comment: 1+21 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX2e, JHEP style; v2: added one reference + made minor changes and added a few comments to clarify the presentatio

Stereotactic cyst aspiration directly followed by Gamma Knife radiosurgery for large cystic brain metastases

    Get PDF
Background: Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has been proven to be a successful primary treatment for metastatic brain tumors (BM). BM can come in cystic lesions and are often too large for GKRS. An alternative approach to treat cystic BM is stereotactic cyst aspiration (SCA) for volume reduction, making it suitable for GKRS afterwards. Objective: Our objective is evaluation of volumetric reduction after SCA, tumor control, and complications after SCA directly followed by GKRS. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent SCA directly followed by GKRS at the Gamma Knife Center of the Elisabeth-Tweesteden Hospital in Tilburg between 2002 and 2015. In total, 54 patients had undergone this combined approach. Two patients were excluded because of prior intracranial treatment. The other 52 patients were included for analysis. Results: SCA resulted in a mean volumetric reduction of 56.5% (range 5.50–87.00%). In 83.6% of the tumors (46 tumors), SCA led to sufficient volumetric reduction making GKRS possible. The overall local tumor control (OLTC) of the aspirated lesions post-GKRS was 60.9% (28 out of 46 tumors). Median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for all patients were 3 (range 5 days–14 months) and 12 months (range 5 days–58 months), respectively. Leptomeningeal disease was reported in 5 (9.6%) cases. Conclusion: SCA directly followed by GKRS is an effective and time-efficient treatment for large cystic BM in selected patients in which surgery is contraindicated and those with deeply located lesions.</p

Assessing knowledge and willingness to use genetically modified crops in Uganda

Background: There has been a lot of debate on genetically modified (GM) crops both globally and locally in Uganda. Whereas some of the debates have been informed by scientific research, many are not. The level of acceptance and attitudes of people towards GM crops is a function of their knowledge. However, there is a paucity of studies on the knowledge and attitudes of Ugandans on GM crops. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge of GM crops in Uganda. Methods: We carried out a mixed methods study in September 2021 in Bushenyi, Jinja and Wakiso districts. We conducted 18 focus group discussions (FGDs), 13 key informant interviews (KIIs) and 698 quantitative interviews. The quantitative interviews were conducted using structured questionnaires. The FGD and KI interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. The qualitative data were analyzed using framework analysis and the quantitative data were analyzed using modified Poisson regression to identify factors associated with the level of knowledge of GM crops in STATA 15. Results: Out of the 698 respondents interviewed, only 273 (39.1%) had ever heard of GM crops. About 204 (74.7%) of the 273 respondents reported having a moderate–high understanding of GM crops and 62.3% (170) of the respondents further reported that GM crops are harmful to their health and environment, despite some of their intrinsic benefits, such as high productivity, improved income and resilience to pests and diseases. In addition, Out of the 698 respondents interviewed, only 37.7% were wary of the possibility of the emergence of super pests due to the development of resistance to some GM crops. Conclusions: Most of the community members do not have adequate knowledge about GM crops, hence, there is need for sensitization and legislation on GM crops before their release to the public
