Foreign language anxiety on a massive open online language course

This paper examines learner attitudes, self-efficacy beliefs, and anxiety in a beginners’ Spanish Language Massive Open Online Course (LMOOC) by answering three research questions: (1) how do learners feel about acquiring speaking skills on an LMOOC?; (2) do they experience anxiety with regards to speaking?; and (3) do their self-efficacy beliefs remain unchanged during the LMOOC? Data was collected from over 900 participants registered on two Spanish for Beginners programmes offered by The Open University (UK). Quantitative data was collected through reflective questionnaires (11 items) and participants’ comments were obtained on two discussion forums. Results indicate that learners have positive attitudes towards LMOOCs and present higher speaking self-efficacy beliefs by the end of the course. Although spoken interactions in this environment are not synchronous, most participants report feeling intimidated by the idea of posting their recordings on the course forum

Mandatory corporate social responsibility: Law and policy in Indonesia

This research is related to Constitutional Court Verdict Number 53/PUU-VI/2008 on Judicial Review of Article 74 of Company Liability Act Number 40/2007. The verdict officially and legally stipulates that mandatory CSR legal provision be made consistent with the Indonesian constitution. Therefore, the mandatory CSR legal provision is still part of Act Number 40/2007 of Limited Company Liability. The verdict was passed in 2008 but its realization was delayed since the Ministry for Justice and Human Rights passed Regulation Number 47/2012 on Social and Environmental Responsibility. This regulation is only executed four years after the regulation was released. During that period there was pro and contra debates among business associations, the government, CSR academics, and CSR based NGOs on the enactment of mandatory CSR legal provision. This research examines and analyzes the following key issues: (1) the philosopical rationale behind the enactment of mandatory legal provision, (2) the mandatory CSR standard of guidelines currently used by corporations, and (3) the functions, liabilities and jurisdiction of the mandatory CSR surveillance body in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, this study applies a content analysis as an analysis tool. Relevant data from journal articles, relevant books, Bill, and rules and regulations were collected. Additionally, some field data were collected from the interviews with thirty key CSR resource persons. These respondents consisted of academics, CSR-based NGOs, government officials, corporations, and business association representatives. The findings are as follows; the government of Indonesia should strengthen regulation on CSR by passing an Act on CSR, the establishment of CSR surveillance body is necessary, mandatory CSR rules, regulations, and guidelines are also important to be codified and passed by the Government and Indonesia Manual on Mandatory CSR is encouraged to be passed by the Government. Accordingly, this research significantly provides some recommendations on a comprehensive information dissemination of the enactment of mandatory CSR. It also suggests a proper mandatory CSR standard be outlined to suit the Indonesian context and complexity, and that better management functions, liabilities, and jurisdictions of the mandatory CSR surveillance body be strengthened in Indonesia. It is hoped that the findings would benefit the implementation of mandatory CSR legal provision and the drafting of a better mandatory CSR legal framework in the country

Las consonantes fricativas de la lengua gallega

El inventario de sonidos fricativos de la lengua gallega abarca un amplio rango de zonas articulatorias, desde los labios a la glotis. Si bien la variedad estándar recoge únicamente las fricativas anteriores [ ] [ ] y medias [ ]1, otras −como las sibilantes dental [ y laminal [s]− son propias de áreas dialectales del oeste de Galicia. Por otra parte, y también en las provincias occidentales del país gallego, se producen una serie de realizaciones fricativas posteriores, entre las cuales la faríngea −mayoritaria− alterna con la velar [x], uvular e incluso glotal . En este artículo analizaremos las propuestas descriptivas de los diferentes autores y las contrastaremos con los resultados de las investigaciones en torno a la acústica de estos sonidos. Podremos ver así hasta qué punto la descripción articulatoria queda confirmada por los análisis acústicos

This study aims to determine the values of local wisdom contained in the belief in the prohibition of sleeping on mattresses in Dusun Kasuran Hamlet, Margodadi, Seyegan Sleman. The method used in this research is qualitative. Using two types of data and data sources, namely primary data and secondary data. Data collection techniques by means of direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques with data collection, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The technique of checking the validity of the data uses the source triangulation technique and the method triangulation technique. The results of this study indicate that the values of local wisdom in the belief in the prohibition of sleeping on a mattress are historical values, because they have been passed down from generation to generation. Prioritizing religious values, due to fear and public trust. Social values, the emergence of high solidarity between immigrants and community members, Economic values, there are differences in the beds for upper and lower social classes. The stronger the cultural values, the stronger the harmony and peace between the people

Japońska Agencja Międzynarodowej Współpracy (Japan International Cooperation Agency - JICA) ma na celu niesienie pomocy technicznej i doradczej poza granicami Japonii. Działa w powiązaniu z Organizacją Japońskich Młodych Ekspertów ds. Współpracy z Zagranicą (Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers - JOCV). Młodzi japońscy eksperci - wolontariusze w wieku od 20 do 39 lat - pojawili się w Polsce w roku 1993, po podpisaniu przez rządy Polski i Japonii stosownych dokumentów. Przyjeżdżają na dwa lata, w wyjątkowych wypadkach mogą przedłużyć pobyt do trzech lat. Ich zadaniem jest realizowanie programu pomocy w dziedzinach takich, jak: nauczanie języka japońskiego, rehabilitacja osób niepełnosprawnych, popularyzacja sportu i walk Wschodu, kultura, ochrona środowiska oraz nauki techniczne. Teksty internetowe w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego na poziomie podstawowym

Artykuł zwraca uwagę na coraz większą rolę Internetu w codziennym życiu i konieczność pracy z nim oraz prezentowania związanego z nim słownictwa podczas lekcji jpjo. Podkreśla, że Internet stanowi najłatwiej dostępne i najtańsze źródło autentycznych tekstów językowych, pozwalających rozwijać nie tylko kompetencje językowe, ale i interkulturowe osobom uczącym się języka na terenie Polski i poza jej granicami. Omawia niektóre możliwości wykorzystania materiałów internetowych podczas lekcji języka polskiego jako obcego na poziomie podstawowym oraz metody pracy z nimi, umożliwiające rozwijanie u słuchaczy sprawności słuchania, mówienia, czytania i pisania. Zawiera też krótką prezentację wybranych programów i projektów internetowych służących do nauki jpjo.This article draws our attention to the growing importance of the Internet in our daily life and to the necessity of working with it as well as presenting Internet-related vocabulary while teaching Polish as a foreign language. It is emphasized that the Internet provides the most easily available and the cheapest source of authentic texts that enable learners in Poland or abroad to develop not only language skills but also intercultural competence. Some of the possibilities of using the material from the Internet while teaching Polish as a foreign language at an elementary level and the methods of working with it, enabling students to develop skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing are discussed in this article. It also includes a short presentation of selected Internet programs and projects that serve as tools for teaching Polish as a foreign language
