    Preschoolers' attribution of affect to music: a comparison between vocal and instrumental performance

    Research has shown inconsistent results concerning the ability of young children to identify musical emotion. This study explores the influence of the type of musical performance (vocal vs. instrumental) on childrenā€™s affect identification. Using an independent-group design, novel child-directed music was presented in three conditions: instrumental, vocal-only, and song (instrumental plus vocals) to 3- to 6-year-olds previously screened for language development (n = 76). A forced-choice task was used in which children chose a face expressing the emotion matching each musical track. All performance conditions comprised ā€˜happyā€™ (major mode/fast tempo) and ā€˜sadā€™ (minor mode/slow tempo) tracks. Nonsense syllables rather than words were used in the vocals in order to avoid the influence of lyrics on children's decisions. The results showed that even the younger children were able to identify correctly the intended emotion in music, although ā€˜happyā€™ music was more readily recognized and recognition appeared facilitated in the instrumental condition.     Regeneration of tree species in felling gaps were studied during the first two years following harvesting in a tropical forest in Acre state, Brazil. Felling gaps averaged 340 m2 in size, while canopy openings averaged 17%. Seedling mortality in adjacent undisturbed forest was 4.6% yr', and 59.6% yrĀ·1 and 100% yr' in the crown and trunk zones respectively, two years after logging. Recruitment of new seedlings inthe undisturbed forest understorey averaged 462 plants ha' yr', two years after gap creation. Inthe crown zones of the gaps, recruitment of seedlings averaged 1350 ha' yr', and in the trunk zones 1392 ha' yr'. The entire seedling community in trunk zones after logging was composed of new recruits. lhere was a tendency for seedling growth rates to increase from the natural forest (0,21cm yr-1) to the crown zone (0.40cm yr'), Before gap creation, species richness and diversity and seedling density were quite similar. After gap creation a sharp decrease could be verified in the gap.zones, however the differences between gap and undisturbed forest decreased rapidly in the second year after gap creation. lhe regeneration of commercial species was not affected by gap creation apart from the increase in growth rates

    Diversity of Poisonous Plants and their Antidotes, Affecting Ruminant Livestock Production on Rangelands in Ghana

    The survival of the extensive livestock system, the practice for most farmers in the livestock industry in Ghana depends heavily on the natural pastures as forage resource. To efficiently use the rangelands, knowledge of the species composition, especially that of poisonous plants is essential. Documented knowledge in Ghana is scanty; documentation and dissemination of the knowledge resource would enable a wider access and wider benefit to stakeholders. A study was conducted in Ghana on poisonous plants with the aim to discover the existence and diversity of poisonous plants and associated antidotes affecting livestock for documentation and preservation of knowledge. 70 different items were cited; 22 were poisonous plants for which antidotes were not cited, 28 were poisonous plants with known antidotes and 32 antidotes. There were 575 citations of plants from 194 reported cases of suspected plant poisoning, categorized as poisonous plants for which no antidotes were cited (146), poisonous plants with cited antidotes (147) and antidotes (282). 50 plants species were identified and belonged to 29 plant families. Some plants were known only by local names. There was an extensive knowledge of the diversity of poisonous plants and antidotes within the ecological zones along with possible antidotes

    China and the crisis : global power, domestic caution and local initiative

    Even though the global crisis had a quick and dramatic impact on Chinese exports, the Chinese government responded with a range of policy responses that have helped maintain high rates of growth. This success has helped propel China to the centre of global politics, accelerating what many perceive to be a power shift from the West to China. But these gains were achieved by reversing policy in previous years designed to make a fundamental shift in Chinaā€Ÿs mode of development, and have highlighted the problems associated with making such a transition. At the moment that many are looking at the Chinese "model" as a potential alternative to the Washington Consensus, one of the consequences of the crisis is to further question the long term efficacy of this "model" in China itself

    Using Bilateral and Unilateral Exercise to Better Understand the Blood Pressure Lowering Effects of Isometric Handgrip Training: Preliminary Findings

    Isometric handgrip (IHG) training reduces resting blood pressure (BP) in normotensive individuals following 8-10 weeks of unilateral (4 x 2 minute sustained contractions at 30% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) performed by the non-dominant limb, separated by 4 minutes rest) or bilateral IHG training (contractions alternating between dominant and non-dominant limb, separated by 1 minute rest), performed 3-5 times per week. Investigating the effects of a single bout of unilateral or bilateral IHG on vascular function (brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and low-flow mediated constriction (L-FMC)) may provide insight into the underlying hypotensive mechanisms of IHG training. Eight young adult (25.3 Ā± 3.81 years), normotensive (99.65/61.25 Ā± 11.72/9.14 mmHg) women performed a single bout of bilateral (n=4) or unilateral (n=4) IHG exercise. FMD and L-FMC were assessed using ultrasound pre- and post-IHG bout. Following a single IHG bout, no significant changes were observed in FMD (unilateral: pre- = 13.56 Ā± 7.8%, post- =17.26 Ā± 21%, bilateral: pre- = 17.11 Ā± 1.1%, post- = 21.18 Ā± 8.9%) or L-FMC (unilateral: pre- = 3.36 Ā± 11%, post- =-2.26 Ā± 16%, bilateral: pre- = -2.86 Ā± 3.1%, post- = -1.94 Ā± 9.7%) in either group (all p > 0.05). Taken together these preliminary data suggest that in young healthy women, irrespective of isometric exercise on 1 or 2 limbs, the endothelium is not altered significantly. Further research with a larger sample is warranted to confirm that mechanisms other than improved vascular function play a role in IHG-training induced BP lowering

    Sustainable forest management for smallholder farmers in the Brazilian Amazon.

    The paper describes a forest management system to be applied on smallholder farms, particularly on settlement projects in the Brazilian Amazon. The proposed forest management system was designed to generate a new source of family income and to maintain forest structure and biodiversity. The system is new in three main characteristics: the use of short cycles in the management of tropical forests, the low harvesting intensity and environmental impact, and the direct involvement of the local population in ali forest management activities. It is based on a minimum felling cycle of ten years and an annual timber harvest of 5-10 m3 ha-1

    Intensity-dependent reductions in resting blood pressure following short-term isometric exercise training

    To reduce resting blood pressure, a minimum isometric exercise training (IET) intensity has been suggested, but this is not known for short-term IET programmes. We therefore compared the effects of moderate- and low-intensity IET programmes on resting blood pressure. Forty normotensive participants (22.3 Ā± 3.4 years; 69.5 Ā± 15.5 kg; 170.2 Ā± 8.7 cm) were randomly assigned to groups of differing training intensities [20%EMGpeak (~23%MVC, maximum voluntary contraction, or 30%EMGpeak (~34%MVC)] or control group; 3 weeks of IET at 30%EMGpeak resulted in significant reductions in resting mean arterial pressure (e.g. āˆ’3.9 Ā± 1.0 mmHg, P 0.05). Moreover, after pooling all female versus male participants, IET induced a 6.9-mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure in female participants, but only a 1.5-mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure in male participants, although the difference was not significant. An IET intensity between 20%EMGpeak and 30%EMGpeak is sufficient to elicit significant resting blood pressure reductions in a short-term training period (3 weeks). In addition, sexual dimorphism may exist in the magnitude of reductions, but further work is required to confirm this possibility, which could be important in understanding the mechanisms responsible
