    A Low Cost Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry Sensor

    Magnetic resonance relaxometry, conducted by measuring relaxation parameters at different field strengths, has become an increasingly popular technique in recent years. This technique, known as field cycling, often uses expensive and large electromagnets. In this work we present a small, portable field cycling sensor. Fast field cycling is a technique that uses a varying magnetic field applied to a sample, polarising it at a high field, allowing it time to develop at a lower field and then collecting the data at the same initial high field. This causes changes in T1 and can reveal interesting proper ties of the samples not seen by traditional methods. A prototype portable magnetic resonance sensor that undertakes relaxometry measurements using fast field cycling has been developed using a combination of permanent magnets which has been used to conduct preliminary studies on a water sample. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this sensor by conducting measurements of T1 at different field strengths

    A magnetic resonance disruption (MaRDi) technique for the detection of surface immobilised magnetic nanoparticles

    There are numerous assays that result in a surface with bound magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) whose number is proportional to the concentration of the analyte of interest. The techniques used to explore such assays are typically complex and costly. Since the presence of such MNP disrupts the pulsed magnetic resonance signal that would normally be detected from a fluid covering the surface, we present a measurement technique to quantify such assays. In this work we identify and characterise a suitable fluid for such measurements, namely 10 cSt viscosity PDMS oil of thickness 250 μm. We demonstrate that the Teff2 relaxation time from the PDMS reduces as the proportion of the surface area covered with MNP increases. Most significant however, is a linear decrease in the signal amplitude from the PDMS as a function of MNP coverage. This is observed both for the integral over 4096 echoes and also in the first echo promising simplified console electronics for rapid measurements

    Promoting physical activity through text messages:the impact of attitude and goal priority messages

    INTRODUCTION: Many young adults demonstrate insufficient rates of physical activity (PA) to yield health benefits. The study tested the effectiveness of a text messaging intervention targeting key psychological determinants and PA. METHODS: Participants received either attitude messages, goal priority messages, a combination of these, or generic PA information (control). After confirming that groups were matched at baseline, a 2 (attitude: yes vs. no) by 2 (goal priority: yes vs. no) by 2 (time: immediately post-intervention, four weeks post-intervention) randomized control trial tested main and interactive effects. RESULTS: Results showed participants that received attitude messages had significantly more positive attitudes, intentions and rates of PA. Mediational analyses showed the influence of attitude messages on PA to be fully mediated through the serial path via attitude and intention. There were no other main or interactive effects. CONCLUSION: The study provides support for using attitudinal messages delivered via text messaging to influence key psychological determinants and PA

    Low-temperature muon spin rotation studies of the monopole charges and currents in Y doped Ho2Ti2O7

    In the ground state of Ho2Ti2O7 spin ice, the disorder of the magnetic moments follows the same rules as the proton disorder in water ice. Excitations take the form of magnetic monopoles that interact via a magnetic Coulomb interaction. Muon spin rotation has been used to probe the low-temperature magnetic behaviour in single crystal Ho2−xYxTi2O7 (x = 0, 0.1, 1, 1.6 and 2). At very low temperatures, a linear field dependence for the relaxation rate of the muon precession λ(B), that in some previous experiments on Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice has been associated with monopole currents, is observed in samples with x = 0, and 0.1. A signal from the magnetic fields penetrating into the silver sample plate due to the magnetization of the crystals is observed for all the samples containing Ho allowing us to study the unusual magnetic dynamics of Y doped spin ice

    Bridging the gap between health psychology and philosophy:an existential approach to promoting physical activity

    Participation rates in a number of health-related behaviors, such as physical activity, have shown recent declines. To promote participation, psychological health behavior change theories have been developed to understand and help identify relevant psychological processes. Such processes can then be targeted within interventions utilizing specific behavior change techniques (BCTs). Although the use of these theories and BCTs is useful in facilitating change, such work could be enhanced through the inclusion and consideration of philosophical positions. Existentialism suggests that the absurdity and meaningless of human life allows the individual to create their own meaning within a behavior. This philosophical position thus places meaning and individual purpose at the center of human behavior. The purpose of this article is to connect the theoretical insights and BCTs outlined within health psychological behavior change theories with the philosophical position of existentialism. The integration of this philosophical position, and potentially many others, with psychological ideas may provide useful insights into the promotion of health-related behaviors
