A Similarity Measure for GPU Kernel Subgraph Matching
Accelerator architectures specialize in executing SIMD (single instruction,
multiple data) in lockstep. Because the majority of CUDA applications are
parallelized loops, control flow information can provide an in-depth
characterization of a kernel. CUDAflow is a tool that statically separates CUDA
binaries into basic block regions and dynamically measures instruction and
basic block frequencies. CUDAflow captures this information in a control flow
graph (CFG) and performs subgraph matching across various kernel's CFGs to gain
insights to an application's resource requirements, based on the shape and
traversal of the graph, instruction operations executed and registers
allocated, among other information. The utility of CUDAflow is demonstrated
with SHOC and Rodinia application case studies on a variety of GPU
architectures, revealing novel thread divergence characteristics that
facilitates end users, autotuners and compilers in generating high performing
code
Predictors of Resilience Among Infants at Risk for Rapid Weight Gain
Objective: The study objective was to investigate factors associated with resilience to rapid weight gain (RWG) among predominantly bottle-fed infants.
Methods: Data came from 1,353 mothers who participated in the Infant Feeding Practices Study 2. Mothers completed a prenatal questionnaire and monthly surveys of infant feeding and growth between birth and 12 months. Infants were classified as resilient if they were predominantly bottle fed but did not exhibit RWG between birth and the latter half of infancy (≥ +0.67 change in weight-for-age z score).
Results: Thirty-five percent of the sample (n = 467) was predominantly bottle fed but did not exhibit RWG (“Resilient”), 17% (n = 228) was predominantly bottle fed and exhibited RWG (“Not Resilient”), and 49% (n = 658) was not predominantly bottle fed (“Low Risk”). Significant predictors of resilience to RWG were greater gestational age (P = 0.042) and weight (P \u3c 0.001) at birth, lower frequency of adding cereal to the bottle (P = 0.022), lower frequency of infant-led bottle-emptying (P = 0.047), and greater frequency of maternal encouragement of bottle-emptying (P = 0.002).
Conclusions: Associations between bottle-feeding and RWG may be moderated by infant characteristics and maternal feeding practices. The present study highlighted several characteristics of predominantly bottle-fed infants who were resilient to RWG, but further research is needed to identify a broader array of key targets for future intervention efforts
A Reo model of Software Defined Networks
Reo is a compositional coordination language for component connectors with a formal semantics based on automata. In this paper, we propose a formal model of software defined networks (SDNs) based on Reo where declarative constructs comprising of basic Reo primitives compose to specify descriptive models of both data and control planes of SDNs. We first describe the model of an SDN switch which can be compactly represented as a single state constraint automaton with a memory storing its flow table. A full network can then be compositionally constructed by composing the switches with basic communication channels. The reactive and proactive behaviour of the controllers in the control plane of an SDN can also be modelled by Reo connectors, which can compose the connectors representing data plane. The resulting model is suitable for testing, simulation, visualization, verification, and ultimately compilation into SDN switch code using the standard tools already available for Reo
Associations between fruit and vegetable intake, leisure-time physical activity, sitting time and self-rated health among older adults : cross-sectional data from the WELL study
BackgroundLifestyle behaviours, such as healthy diet, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, are key elements of healthy ageing and important modifiable risk factors in the prevention of chronic diseases. Little is known about the relationship between these behaviours in older adults. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and sitting time (ST), and their association with self-rated health in older adults.MethodsThis cross-sectional study comprised 3,644 older adults (48% men) aged 55-65 years, who participated in the Wellbeing, Eating and Exercise for a Long Life ("WELL") study. Respondents completed a postal survey about their health and their eating and physical activity behaviours in 2010 (38% response rate). Spearman\u27s coefficient (rho) was used to evaluate the relationship between F&V intake, LTPA and ST. Their individual and shared associations with self-rated health were examined using ordinal logistic regression models, stratified by sex and adjusted for confounders (BMI, smoking, long-term illness and socio-demographic characteristics).ResultsThe correlations between F&V intake, LTPA and ST were low. F&V intake and LTPA were positively associated with self-rated health. Each additional serving of F&V or MET-hour of LTPA were associated with approximately 10% higher likelihood of reporting health as good or better among women and men. The association between ST and self-rated health was not significant in the multivariate analysis. A significant interaction was found (ST*F&V intake). The effect of F&V intake on self-rated health increased with increasing ST in women, whereas the effect decreased with increasing ST in men.ConclusionThis study contributes to the scarce literature related to lifestyle behaviours and their association with health indicators among older adults. The findings suggest that a modest increase in F&V intake, or LTPA could have a marked effect on the health of older adults. Further research is needed to fully understand the correlates and determinants of lifestyle behaviours, particularly sitting time, in this age group
Weight gain, overweight, and obesity: determinants and health outcomes from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health
Recent estimates suggest that 35.3\ua0% of adult Australians are overweight and a further 27.5\ua0% are obese. The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) is a prospective study of women's health that commenced in Australia in 1996. The study recruited approximately 40,000 women in three birth cohorts, 1973-1978, 1946-1951 and 1921-1926, who have since been followed up approximately every three years using self-report surveys. Six surveys have been completed to date. This review aims to describe the changes in weight and weight status over time in the three ALSWH cohorts, and to review and summarise the published findings to date relating to the determinants and health consequences of weight gain, overweight and obesity. Future plans for the ALSWH include on-going surveys for all cohorts, with a seventh survey in 2013-2015, and establishment of a new cohort of women born in 1990-1995, which is currently being recruited
Resilience to obesity among socioeconomically disadvantaged women : the READI study
Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to identify sociodemographic and behavioural characteristics of ‘overweight-resilient’ women, that is, women who were in a healthy body weight range, despite living in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods that place them at increased risk of obesity. The study also aimed to test a comprehensive theoretically derived model of the associations between intrapersonal, social and environmental factors and obesity among this target group.Participants: A total of 3235 women aged 18–45 years from 80 urban and rural neighbourhoods throughout Victoria, Australia, participated in the Resilience for Eating and Activity Despite Inequality study.Measurements: Women reported height, weight, sociodemographic characteristics, leisure-time physical activity, dietary behaviours and a range of theoretically derived cognitive, social and neighbourhood environmental characteristics hypothesized to influence obesity risk. A theoretical model predicting body mass index (BMI) was tested using structural equation models.Results: Women classified as ‘resilient’ to obesity tended to be younger, born overseas, more highly educated, unmarried and to have higher or undisclosed household incomes. They engaged in more leisure-time physical activity and consumed less fast foods and soft drinks than overweight/obese women. Neighbourhood characteristics, social characteristics and cognitive characteristics all contributed to explaining variation in BMI in the hypothesized directions.Conclusions: These results demonstrate several characteristics of women appearing ‘resilient’ to obesity, despite their increased risk conferred by residing in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Acknowledging the cross-sectional study design, the results advance theoretical frameworks aimed at investigating obesity risk by providing evidence in support of a comprehensive model of direct and indirect effects on obesity of neighbourhood, as well as social, cognitive and behavioural characteristics
Single-inclusive production of large-pT charged particles in hadronic collisions at TeV energies and perturbative QCD predictions
The single inclusive spectrum of charged particles with transverse momenta
pT=3-150 GeV/c measured at midrapidity by the CDF experiment in
proton-antiproton (p-pbar) collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV is compared to
next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the most recent
parametrizations of the parton distributions and parton-to-hadron fragmentation
functions. Above pT~20 GeV/c, there is a very sizeable disagreement of the
Tevatron data compared to the NLO predictions and to xT-scaling expectations,
suggesting a problem in the experimental data. We also present the predictions
for the pT-differential charged hadron spectra and the associated theoretical
uncertainties for proton-proton (p-p) collisions at LHC energies
(sqrt(s)=0.9-14 TeV). Two procedures to estimate the charged hadron spectra at
LHC heavy-ion collision energies (sqrt(s)=2.76,5.5 TeV) from p-p measurements

b-Initiated processes at the LHC: a reappraisal
Several key processes at the LHC in the standard model and beyond that
involve quarks, such as single-top, Higgs, and weak vector boson associated
production, can be described in QCD either in a 4-flavor or 5-flavor scheme. In
the former, quarks appear only in the final state and are typically
considered massive. In 5-flavor schemes, calculations include quarks in the
initial state, are simpler and allow the resummation of possibly large initial
state logarithms of the type into the
parton distribution function (PDF), being the typical scale of the
hard process. In this work we critically reconsider the rationale for using
5-flavor improved schemes at the LHC. Our motivation stems from the observation
that the effects of initial state logs are rarely very large in hadron
collisions: 4-flavor computations are pertubatively well behaved and a
substantial agreement between predictions in the two schemes is found. We
identify two distinct reasons that explain this behaviour, i.e., the
resummation of the initial state logarithms into the -PDF is relevant only
at large Bjorken and the possibly large ratios 's are
always accompanied by universal phase space suppression factors. Our study
paves the way to using both schemes for the same process so to exploit their
complementary advantages for different observables, such as employing a
5-flavor scheme to accurately predict the total cross section at NNLO and the
corresponding 4-flavor computation at NLO for fully exclusive studies.Comment: Fixed typo in Eq. (A.10) and few typos in Eq. (C.2) and (C.3
Subject specific demands of teaching: Implications for out-of-field teachers
This chapter provides a framework for thinking about the subject-specific nature of teaching in terms of the
knowledge, modes of inquiry and discursive practices that delineate one subject from another in the
traditional school curriculum. The chapter will explore how these disciplinary traits are translated into
teaching as curriculum, knowledge and pedagogy, and how this subject-specificity of teaching is
juxtaposed against the more generic aspects of teaching. The chapter explores the idea that if a teacher’s
expertise can be situated within a field, then they can also be positioned out-of-field. Implications for
teaching out-of-field are discussed in terms of the subject-specific knowledge, processes and skills, and the
difficulties associated with teacher practice. English and Australian illustrations of teacher practices from
in-field and out-of-field situations are provided, in particular highlighting the demands of moving across
subject boundaries. Cross-fertilisation is especially evident when subjects are integrated, therefore, the
issues associated with integrated curriculum are discussed where the traditional subject boundaries are
being challenged as schools are reorganised to integrate subjects through, for example, STEM teaching, or
holistic curriculum designs
