Rapid ecological assessment of wasp fauna (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) of the Serra do Divisor National Park, Acre, Brazil
The Serra do Divisor National Park (PNSD), located at the northwest of Acre State, Amazonia, is considered an area of great biodiversity. The question of considering insects in conservation programs. Solitary and social wasps are important components of the terrestrial ecosystems due to their position in trophic webs. The present study aimed at making a rapid ecological assessment of the wasps from the PNSD in order to support the elaboration of a conservation and management plan for that park. The insects were sampled in 12 sites located in eight forest types by Malaise traps that operated in each for 24 hours, totaling 288 hours of sampling. The results on the families Chalcididae, Eucharitidae, Evaniidae, Mutillidae, Pompilidae, Crabronidae and Vespidae are presented here. On the whole, 366 wasps were collected representing 40 genera and 85 species. The genera Ephuta (Mutillidae), Trypoxylon (Crabronidae) and Conura (Chalcididae) were the most specious. The sites situated at the northern region of the PNSD, the intangible and primitive zones, were the most species rich. Some collected species were considered rare and about 65% of species were exclusive to only one site. This means that the samples have little faunal similarity.Fundação S.O.S
Unilateral perineal hernia in female cat - case report
ABSTRACT The objective is to report a clinical surgical case of perineal unilateral hernia in a female feline, neutered, 13-years old, mixed-breed admitted in the “hidden for review” Veterinary Hospital presenting prostration, constipation, volume increase and pain in right perineal region started two weeks ago. On clinical inspection it was possible to visualize a rigid, irreducible and painful increased volume in the right perineal region. Ultrasound showed that the increased volume was a hernia containing the colon. The surgical correction was made with herniorrhaphy. One week after the surgical procedure the patient presented a cutaneous abscess, probably originated from fecal contamination, and it was treated by prolonging the use of systemic antibiotics and cleaning of the site. On 45-days after the surgical procedure the patient did not show signs of pain or discomfort and defecated normally. It is suggested that despite perineal hernias being unusual in females, especially neutered, this disease should be included as a differential diagnosis in animals presenting increase of perineal volume, regardless of sex. The classical technique with sutures was considered fast, with low trauma, unlike other correction techniques, besides being successful, avoiding recurrence of the condition and bringing comfort and well-being to the patient
Updated precision measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons
The measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons using inclusively reconstructed secondary vertices has been updated using both an improved processing of previous data and additional statistics from new data. This has reduced the statistical and systematic uncertainties and gives \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.582 \pm 0.011\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.027\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.} Combining this result with the previous result based on charged particle impact parameter distributions yields \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.575 \pm 0.010\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.026\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.
Antimicrobial resistance and virulence studies in broiler chicken production: a one health approach
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize bacterial species and their resistance and virulence profiles in a poultry production located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Samples from 1-day-old chicks and broilers were evaluated using dependent and independent cultivation techniques. The 25 strains of Staphylococcus spp. presented the mecA gene. Of the 51 strains of Enterococcus spp., a strain of E. faecium presented the vanB gene, and one strain of E. faecalis presented vanA and vanB genes simultaneously. Analysis of scraped litter from wood used for poultry animals revealed the presence of a carbapenemase resistant gene, blaVIM, in one of the samples evaluated. Of the 44 Enterobacterales isolates, 45% (20/44) were extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producers. Of these, 9 (45%) tested positive for the blaSHV gene, 4 (20%) for the blaCTX gene, 3 (15%) for the blaTEM gene, 2 (10%) for the blaSHV and blaCTX genes and 2 (10%) for the blaSHV and blaTEM genes. Some virulence factors related to avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) were detected in the E. coli strains. The role of animal production in the emergence and spread of resistance genes is a matter of One Health, requiring studies to be carried out in animal environments
Genetic diversity of cultivated accessions and wild species of rubber tree using EST‑SSR markers
The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of EST‑SSR markers in the assessment of the genetic diversity of rubber tree genotypes (Hevea brasiliensis) and to verify the transferability of these markers for wild species of Hevea. Forty‑five rubber tree accessions from the Instituto Agronômico (Campinas, SP, Brazil) and six wild species were used. Information provided by modified Roger's genetic distance were used to analyze EST‑SSR data. UPGMA clustering divided the samples into two major groups with high genetic differentiation, while the software Structure distributed the 51 clones into eight groups. A parallel could be established between both clustering analyses. The 30 polymorphic EST‑SSRs showed from two to ten alleles and were efficient in amplifying the six wild species. Functional EST‑SSR microsatellites are efficient in evaluating the genetic diversity among rubber tree clones and can be used to translate the genetic differences among cultivars and to fingerprint closely related materials. The accessions from the Instituto Agronômico show high genetic diversity. The EST‑SSR markers, developed from Hevea brasiliensis, show transferability and are able to amplify other species of Hevea
Identification of canine papillomavirus type 1 (CPV1) DNA in dogs with cutaneous papillomatosis
Canine oral papillomavirus (COPV), also known as Canine Papillomavirus type 1 (CPV1), induces papillomas at the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and at the haired skin of dogs. The classification of Papillomavirus (PV) types is based on the L1 capsid protein and nucleotide sequence; so far, 14 CPV types have been described in several countries, but the molecular characterization of CPV in Brazil is lacking. This study investigated the presence of the PV in seven papillomas from four mixed breed dogs from Londrina/PR, Southern Brazil, by partial sequencing of the L1 gene. Seven exophytic cutaneous lesions were surgically removed and processed for histopathological and molecular characterization. Histopathology confirmed the lesions as viral papillomas due to typical histological features. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay using the FAP59 and FAP64 primers targeted the L1 gene followed by sequence analysis of the amplicons identified CPV1 in all evaluated papilloma samples. This study represents the first description of CPV1 DNA associated with canine papillomatosis in Brazil
Guided vortex motion in superconductors with a square antidot lattice
We have measured the in-plane anisotropy of the vortex mobility in a thin Pb
film with a square array of antidots. The Lorentz force, acting on the
vortices, was rotated by adding two perpendicular currents and keeping the
amplitude of the net current constant. One set of voltage probes was used to
detect the vortex motion. We show that the pinning landscape provided by the
square antidot lattice influences the vortex motion in two different ways.
First, the modulus of the vortex velocity becomes angular dependent with a
lower mobility along the diagonals of the pinning array. Second, the vortex
displacement is preferentially parallel to the principal axes of the underlying
pinning lattice, giving rise to a misalignment between the vortex velocity and
the applied Lorentz force. We show that this anisotropic vortex motion is
temperature dependent and progressively fades out when approaching the normal
state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
