Large Polarization and Susceptibilities in Artificial Morphotropic Phase Boundary PbZr1−xTixO3 Superlattices
The ability to produce atomically precise, artificial oxide heterostructures allows for the possibility of producing exotic phases and enhanced susceptibilities not found in parent materials. Typical ferroelectric materials either exhibit large saturation polarization away from a phase boundary or large dielectric susceptibility near a phase boundary. Both large ferroelectric polarization and dielectric permittivity are attained wherein fully epitaxial (PbZr0.8Ti0.2O3)n/(PbZr0.4Ti0.6O3)2n (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 16 unit cells) superlattices are produced such that the overall film chemistry is at the morphotropic phase boundary, but constitutive layers are not. Long- (n ≥ 6) and short-period (n = 2) superlattices reveal large ferroelectric saturation polarization (Ps = 64 µC cm−2) and small dielectric permittivity (εr ≈ 400 at 10 kHz). Intermediate-period (n = 4) superlattices, however, exhibit both large ferroelectric saturation polarization (Ps = 64 µC cm−2) and dielectric permittivity (εr = 776 at 10 kHz). First-order reversal curve analysis reveals the presence of switching distributions for each parent layer and a third, interfacial layer wherein superlattice periodicity modulates the volume fraction of each switching distribution and thus the overall material response. This reveals that deterministic creation of artificial superlattices is an effective pathway for designing materials with enhanced responses to applied bias
Public Involvement in research within care homes: Benefits and challenges in the APPROACH Study
Public involvement in research (PIR) can improve research design and recruitment. Less is known about how PIR enhances the experience of participation and enriches the data collection process. In a study to evaluate how UK care homes and primary health care services achieve integrated working to promote older people’s health, PIR was integrated throughout the research processes. Objectives This paper aims to present one way in which PIR has been integrated into the design and delivery of a multi-site research study based in care homes. Design A prospective case study design, with an embedded qualitative evaluation of PIR activity. Setting and Participants Data collection was undertaken in six care homes in three sites in England. Six PIR members participated: all had prior personal or work experience in care homes. Data Collection Qualitative data collection involved discussion groups, and site-specific meetings to review experiences of participation, benefits and challenges, and completion of structured fieldwork notes after each care home visit. Results PIR members supported: recruitment, resident and staff interviews and participated in data interpretation. Benefits of PIR work were resident engagement that minimised distress and made best use of limited research resources. Challenges concerned communication and scheduling. Researcher support for PIR involvement was resource intensive. Higgs Messengers
We explore the consequences of the Higgs fields acting as messengers of
supersymmetry breaking. The hidden-sector paradigm in the gauge mediation
framework is relaxed by allowing two types of gauge-invariant, renormalizable
operators that are typically discarded: direct coupling between the Higgses and
supersymmetry breaking singlets, and Higgs-messenger mixing terms. The most
important phenomenological consequence is a flavor-dependent shift in sfermion
masses. This is from a one-loop contribution, which we compute for a general
set of weak doublet messengers. We also study a couple of explicit models in
detail, finding that precision electroweak constraints can be satisfied with a
spectrum significantly different from that of gauge mediation.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Effective health care for older people resident in care homes: the optimal study protocol for realist review

Service delivery to care homes is highly variable in both quantity and quality. This variability is also evident in the commissioning and organisation of care home-specific services that range from the payment of incentives to general practitioners (GPs) to visit care homes, to the creation of care home specialist teams and outreach services run by geriatricians. No primary studies or systematic reviews have robustly evaluated the impact of these different approaches on organisation and resident-level outcomes. Our aim is to identify factors which may explain the perceived or demonstrated effectiveness of programmes to improve health-related outcomes in older people living in care homes. Methods/Design: A realist review approach will be used to develop a theoretical understanding of what works when, why and in what circumstances. Elements of service models of interest include those that focus on assessment and management of residents’ health, those that use strategies to encourage closer working between visiting health care providers and care home staff, and those that address system-wide issues about access to assessment and treatment. These will include studies on continence, dignity, and speech and language assessment as well as interventions to promote person centred dementia care, improve strength and mobility, and nutrition. The impact of these interventions and their different mechanisms will be considered in relation to five key outcomes: residents’ medication use, use of out of hours’ services, hospital admissions (including use of Accident and Emergency) and length of hospital stay, costs and user satisfaction. An iterative three-stage approach will be undertaken that is stakeholder-driven and optimises the knowledge and networks of the research team. Discussion: This realist review will explore why and for whom different approaches to providing health care to residents in care homes improves access to health care in the five areas of interest. It will inform commissioning decisions and be the basis for further research. Phylogeography of Japanese encephalitis virus:genotype is associated with climate
The circulation of vector-borne zoonotic viruses is largely determined by the overlap in the geographical distributions of virus-competent vectors and reservoir hosts. What is less clear are the factors influencing the distribution of virus-specific lineages. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the most important etiologic agent of epidemic encephalitis worldwide, and is primarily maintained between vertebrate reservoir hosts (avian and swine) and culicine mosquitoes. There are five genotypes of JEV: GI-V. In recent years, GI has displaced GIII as the dominant JEV genotype and GV has re-emerged after almost 60 years of undetected virus circulation. JEV is found throughout most of Asia, extending from maritime Siberia in the north to Australia in the south, and as far as Pakistan to the west and Saipan to the east. Transmission of JEV in temperate zones is epidemic with the majority of cases occurring in summer months, while transmission in tropical zones is endemic and occurs year-round at lower rates. To test the hypothesis that viruses circulating in these two geographical zones are genetically distinct, we applied Bayesian phylogeographic, categorical data analysis and phylogeny-trait association test techniques to the largest JEV dataset compiled to date, representing the envelope (E) gene of 487 isolates collected from 12 countries over 75 years. We demonstrated that GIII and the recently emerged GI-b are temperate genotypes likely maintained year-round in northern latitudes, while GI-a and GII are tropical genotypes likely maintained primarily through mosquito-avian and mosquito-swine transmission cycles. Fast approximation of centrality and distances in hyperbolic graphs
We show that the eccentricities (and thus the centrality indices) of all
vertices of a -hyperbolic graph  can be computed in linear
time with an additive one-sided error of at most , i.e., after a
linear time preprocessing, for every vertex  of  one can compute in
 time an estimate  of its eccentricity  such that

. These results are based on an
interesting monotonicity property of the eccentricity function of hyperbolic
graphs: the closer a vertex is to the center of , the smaller its
eccentricity is. We also show that the distance matrix of  with an additive
one-sided error of at most  can be computed in 
time, where  is a small constant. Recent empirical studies show that
many real-world graphs (including Internet application networks, web networks,
collaboration networks, social networks, biological networks, and others) have
small hyperbolicity. So, we analyze the performance of our algorithms for
approximating centrality and distance matrix on a number of real-world
networks. Our experimental results show that the obtained estimates are even

Origin of symbol-using systems: speech, but not sign, without the semantic urge
Natural language—spoken and signed—is a multichannel phenomenon, involving facial and body expression, and voice and visual intonation that is often used in the service of a social urge to communicate meaning. Given that iconicity seems easier and less abstract than making arbitrary connections between sound and meaning, iconicity and gesture have often been invoked in the origin of language alongside the urge to convey meaning. To get a fresh perspective, we critically distinguish the origin of a system capable of evolution from the subsequent evolution that system becomes capable of. Human language arose on a substrate of a system already capable of Darwinian evolution; the genetically supported uniquely human ability to learn a language reflects a key contact point between Darwinian evolution and language. Though implemented in brains generated by DNA symbols coding for protein meaning, the second higher-level symbol-using system of language now operates in a world mostly decoupled from Darwinian evolutionary constraints. Examination of Darwinian evolution of vocal learning in other animals suggests that the initial fixation of a key prerequisite to language into the human genome may actually have required initially side-stepping not only iconicity, but the urge to mean itself. If sign languages came later, they would not have faced this constraint
Mechanical Stress Inference for Two Dimensional Cell Arrays
Many morphogenetic processes involve mechanical rearrangement of epithelial
tissues that is driven by precisely regulated cytoskeletal forces and cell
adhesion. The mechanical state of the cell and intercellular adhesion are not
only the targets of regulation, but are themselves likely signals that
coordinate developmental process. Yet, because it is difficult to directly
measure mechanical stress {\it in vivo} on sub-cellular scale, little is
understood about the role of mechanics of development. Here we present an
alternative approach which takes advantage of the recent progress in live
imaging of morphogenetic processes and uses computational analysis of high
resolution images of epithelial tissues to infer relative magnitude of forces
acting within and between cells. We model intracellular stress in terms of bulk
pressure and interfacial tension, allowing these parameters to vary from cell
to cell and from interface to interface. Assuming that epithelial cell layers
are close to mechanical equilibrium, we use the observed geometry of the two
dimensional cell array to infer interfacial tensions and intracellular
pressures. Here we present the mathematical formulation of the proposed
Mechanical Inverse method and apply it to the analysis of epithelial cell
layers observed at the onset of ventral furrow formation in the {\it
Drosophila} embryo and in the process of hair-cell determination in the avian
cochlea. The analysis reveals mechanical anisotropy in the former process and
mechanical heterogeneity, correlated with cell differentiation, in the latter
process. The method opens a way for quantitative and detailed experimental
tests of models of cell and tissue mechanics
A comparative study of Tam3 and Ac transposition in transgenic tobacco and petunia plants
Transposition of the Anthirrinum majus Tam3 element and the Zea mays Ac element has been monitored in petunia and tobacco plants. Plant vectors were constructed with the transposable elements cloned into the leader sequence of a marker gene. Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated leaf disc transformation was used to introduce the transposable element constructs into plant cells. In transgenic plants, excision of the transposable element restores gene expression and results in a clearly distinguishable phenotype. Based on restored expression of the hygromycin phosphotransferase II (HPTII) gene, we established that Tam3 excises in 30% of the transformed petunia plants and in 60% of the transformed tobacco plants. Ac excises from the HPTII gene with comparable frequencies (30%) in both plant species. When the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene was used to detect transposition of Tam3, a significantly lower excision frequency (13%) was found in both plant species. It could be shown that deletion of parts of the transposable elements Tam3 and Ac, removing either one of the terminal inverted repeats (TIR) or part of the presumptive transposase coding region, abolished the excision from the marker genes. This demonstrates that excision of the transposable element Tam3 in heterologous plant species, as documented for the autonomous element Ac, also depends on both properties. Southern blot hybridization shows the expected excision pattern and the reintegration of Tam3 and Ac elements into the genome of tobacco plants.
Definitions and clinical guidance on the enteral dependence component of the avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder diagnostic criteria in children
The aim of the current paper is to offer definitive guidance on weaning children who are reliant on nasogastric/gastrostomy feeding tubes. To date, no internationally recognised definitions or principles for interventions exist and clinics have been reliant on creating their own unique intervention criteria. To achieve the aim, two goals are set out within the current paper. The first goal was to definitively define the process of tube weaning. In order to achieve this, both tube dependency and oral eating also required definitions. It is necessary for these two additional definitions to fully understand the process of tube weaning and the transition that the child is making within these clinical interventions. The second goal of this paper was to propose a set of minimum measurement criteria within a tube weaning protocol so that different clinical practices and perspectives may be measured accurately. This would then allow outcomes from different clinical services to be compared for efficacy. The culmination of this paper is a set of five core principles that should govern clinics that adhere to the auspices of evidence-based practice. These principles, if adopted, will provide the basis of a set of internationally recognised criteria within this field of paediatric gastroenterology
